Hi everyone,

Currently 6+2 and having pretty bad nausea all day, can't think about/prepare food but can manage to eat something when put in front of me.

I work full time NHS front line, I've only had 2 days working with the nausea, and putting on a face and getting through the day is taking all my energy. I come home and have zero energy to do everything (say this after waking up from a 2 hour nap) and no personality with my partner. The only thing keeping me content is knowing that this is a good sign that things are progressing as they should.

I know I'm luckier than others in that no vomiting so far. What I need to know is, is it ok/normal for me to come home and lie around on the couch/in bed? I tried going for a walk on Sunday but it didn't make me feel any better.

And, when did your nausea peak/start getting better?
Thank you

16 weeks (5 on cyclizine) and the vomiting is just beginning to wear off. Still nauseous most of the time though. If one more midwife tells me that eating ginger biscuits will work better than the meds I might scream.

Hoping to put the weight back on soon, I'm still a stone lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight.

OP don't feel guilty about doing whatever you need to do to feel better, or even just survive the day. If that's collapsing on the couch when you get home, getting your partner to cook, sleeping all the time you're not working, do it. And if you need to be signed off, don't feel guilty for that either. I've been a zombie ever since the sickness started, do what you need to do to get through it.

This time pretty much gone by 10 I am occasionally sick now but I Don't really feel sick at all.

I work in a busy dental practice as a nurse wearing the fpp3 masks I really struggled all my team knew as there was no hiding it. I was throwing up continuously.

I would suggest talking to GP. Xx

Pumpertrumper · 13/01/2021 13:09

With DS literally didn’t stop till I had him. Although it did ‘improve’ around 20 weeks. Still horrible though.

This time it seemed to get better around 12 weeks but has been exchanged for AWFUL gas, constant and unrelenting! I still get sick days though, I’m now 18 weeks.

PinkPurpleOrangeBrownBlue · 13/01/2021 13:10

I was from about 6 weeks until 16 weeks, 20 weeks to feel fully better. I had a Russian roulette of sickness- every day I’d wake up fine and have breakfast, and some days I’d be being sick within two minutes and other days I would just have dull nausea.

I ended up being signed off work for 8 weeks and had my hours adjusted when I went back so I was able to go home earlier in the day (when I felt most tired). In the end I had to try a few different medications for the vomiting and ended up on one that they give to cancer patients after chemotherapy to stop them being sick.

If it carries on or gets worse please do see your GP

20 weeks both times, it eased at about 18 weeks though I think. It’s awful and you have my sympathies! It really IS worth it in the end and once it’s over it’s just a bad memory. It’s very hard at the time though. Do whatever you need to get through and don’t feel guilty about resting as much as possible. Tiredness makes if worse. Like others have said keep snacking little and often on whatever you can stomach. I found the travel sickness wrist bands took the edge off.

Superscientist · 13/01/2021 13:18

I had pregnancy sickness from 6-13 weeks, week 16 and the 25-36 weeks.

I had cyclizine prescribed and have ended up a stone lighter than prepregnancy. I was a size small to start with so it wasn't like I had weight to lose!

FoodandFelines · 13/01/2021 13:32

Mine started before 4 weeks (it's how I found out I was pregnant) and lasted until 18 weeks, with week 11 being the worst. By 20 weeks I was finally feeling like myself again. I was rarely sick (I just can't seem to be able to vomit, no matter how strong the urge to vomit is), but I had 24/7 horrendous nausea and extreme aversion to all food. I never knew how debilitating this can be before getting pregnant.

The only way I managed to stay out of hospital was by getting some minimal hydration from sucking ice cubes, ice lollies (only very specific flavours) or sipping small amounts of ice-cold water (bottled water in glass bottles only - the smell and taste of tap water or water in plastic bottles was more than I could handle). My salvation came when I discovered a random brand of Japanese instant ramen noodles that I could tolerate some days (again, only a very specific brand and only in one flavour, so it's really a lot of trial and error). It's basically water, lots of salt and carbs from the noodles but that is a feast when you can't eat anything. If you can tolerate any fruit at all, that's another way to get some hydration and sugar in. I sometimes managed grapefruit, or some days even an orange. I found that the only time I consistently managed to eat something was in the morning so I made sure to eat a small bowl of plain porridge every morning. Around 12 weeks I finally discovered that sucking on a boiled sweet (Werther's Original caramel candies, in my case) gave me huge relief for the short while I had the candy in my mouth. I think at my peak I ate close to 100 grams of these every day, basically needed one in my mouth at all times to get through the day. Thank God for face masks as I'm not allowed to eat or even chew gum at work. Finally, going for walks in the cold, crisp air also helped me.

You have my sympathy 100%. I was also working full days during this time and found that being tired made it much worse. Just focus on surviving this period and eat what you can when you can. Really. No matter what it is. Hang in there. Flowers

Mrslouu · 13/01/2021 13:39

Awful between 7 and 11 weeks now nearly 13 and feeling so much better.

Superscientist · 13/01/2021 16:42

@FoodandFelines I had an aversion to tap water too! I could tolerate boiled water with a little bit of honey in.

I second the fruit suggestion I lived of tinned fruit mostly peaches. I found they were good as I could eat them a slice at a time and didn't have to worry about not finishing them I could pop it in the fridge for later.

kallia · 13/01/2021 16:51

Oh yes water aversion! Thought I was the only one who had it. Couldn't drink water for a few weeks and even showering/washing my hands made me retch.

Birchtree4 · 17/01/2021 20:02

Sorry for reigniting a thread from last week. Thanks again so much for the supportive messages and for sharing your experience, I have read through all responses a couple of times and just knowing that others have been through it makes me feel that little bit better.

My nausea seems to be gradually getting more persistent. Now my sleep is quite disturbed and I'm just constantly having stressful/anxious dreams and can feel the nausea in my sleep. When I'm not working/sleeping im watching netflix and have to pause every time characters are eating/drinking alcohol/smoking.

Really wasn't expecting it to be this bad and glad I've got you lot to moan to!
X

Hi I hope you're okay!! I had it so so bad from week 6 till week 13. Im now week 14 and it has eased alot but still niggling abit and now I often get extreme hunger too but food aversions don't help with this as I don't fancy anything then end up feeling more sick because of not eating. It has definitely gotten so much better over the last week though and I've heard that by week 16 it should be even better. Dont beat yourself up about not doing anything, remember your body is actually doing ALOT! ive actually been off work quite abit and I've felt guilty but then again your health comes first. Hope it buggers off for us all soon x

user1471518119 · 17/01/2021 21:05

About 35 weeks unfortunately...

Whatagreytdoggo · 17/01/2021 23:29

Sorry OP, I feel for you! Pregnancy one, it only stopped once she was born 😬
Pregnant with number two now and its starting to ease off at 33 weeks.

Reeva1988 · 17/01/2021 23:43

I was the same honestly , it was horrific at one point . Couldn’t think of food or even watch adverts with food on. Couldn’t even open my fridge cos the smell made me heave . Brushing my teeth was the worst ! Constant gagging ! It will ease though x

IdblowJonSnow · 17/01/2021 23:54

I think about 13 to 14 weeks. It's rotten, you have my sympathy OP.

Ginger biscuits helped me in the first trimester.

Northernlass101 · 18/01/2021 00:01

17 weeks ish!!! Very intense from 5-17 but I'm starting to feel normal now - currently 18 weeks ❤️

mintich · 18/01/2021 00:02

DD it never got better!
DS 1 15 weeks
DS 2 30 weeks

lucyrp · 18/01/2021 07:16

@Birchtree4 I had nausea right from the start or so I thought then I hit 6 weeks and it ramped up to a whole new level. The first 2 days til 6+2 the nausea was overwhelming and that's when I started to vomit. Was vomiting 3/4 times a day and couldn't keep anything down and lack of appetite combined wasn't a good mix so I had to go to the doctors to get some anti sickness which worked. . The nausea seems to have relaxed a bit but unless I take these tablets I feel I have to be sick at least once w day. Sorry I know this is not what you want to hear but just giving my experience! I am now 9 weeks. With my first I'm sure it eased off at 12 weeks. Every cloud and all that though I've lost 8 pounds so far!🤣 I have done barely anything since ive found out I was pregnant and I used to go to the gym 6 times a week. I get to around 3pm and feel like I need a nap and then when it gets to bed time I can't sleep! The joys x

MariaDingbat · 18/01/2021 09:31

I felt constantly travel sick and hungover from week 4 till it eased off at week 14. I went down to a 4 day work week for 8 of the 10 weeks as I felt so rotten and exhausted. Working from home was a godsend as I just spent the day in bed with my laptop and napped as much as I needed. And eating ice lollies helped lots as did salt and vinegar crisps. It's horrible but hopefully it will pass before too long.

Merrz · 18/01/2021 13:39

Hey OP, just wanted to say I spent the entire weekend on the sofa, 8 + 3 now and the feeling absolutely shit has really ramped up over the last few days, along with actual vomiting Sad sobbed to DH last night just because I feel so crap and don't know how I'll get through the next weeks

Merrz · 18/01/2021 13:41

Ice lollies and salt and vinegar crisps are also about all I can get down too, really struggling to drink so sucking on ice cubes to try and keep hydrated

alwaystired01 · 18/01/2021 13:42

I can't add much except to say I'm currently 8 weeks and struggling to function because the nausea is so extreme. I had a midwife appointment today and she said that most people feel better after 12 weeks. Hoping this is true because I can't bear the thought of much more of this! You really have my sympathy.

CuppaZa · 18/01/2021 13:43

@Birchtree4 when I gave birth

Merrz · 18/01/2021 13:51

@alwaystired01 I'm counting on this being over by 12 weeks, I just keep thinking I've know I was pregnant for 4 weeks and in 4 weeks this feeling will be over, that's how I'm mentally trying to get through it. It's so so bloody hard though isn't it 😭
