How long was your hospital stay after c-section?

I’m currently 34 weeks and down to have an elective c-section (date not booked yet) but just wondering what everyone’s experiences were of how long you stayed in hospital?

OP posts:
sherrystrull · 27/12/2020 00:16

I had to c sections and stayed 3 nights with each. I felt good on day 1, rubbish on day 2 and ready to go home on day 3. Don't try and rush home. I know it's tempting.

Congratulations!

Lifeonmars12 · 27/12/2020 00:16

Due to COVID if you and baby are both fine you are out the next day.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 27/12/2020 00:17

I’ve never had a c section myself but a friend had one last week she went home the next day.

Waffleblock · 27/12/2020 00:19

ELCS 11 days ago. Baby born at 11am, was home 6pm the following day. That was with no complications, and I had requested to go. I was told beforehand they would try and discharge after 24 hours, still surprised it happened though!

Aberforthsgoat · 27/12/2020 00:20

Baby born at 9am was home by 11am the following day

Cam2020 · 27/12/2020 00:20

One night. This was three years ago. EMC.

Pipandmum · 27/12/2020 00:22

Four days both times. I couldn't walk until the next day with the first but I think it was just what they did - maybe i could have gone home a day earlier. With my second she was in NICU for three days so no choice as they have babies stay one more day with you on the ward after NICU. I also lost a lot of blood and had a drain attached for a bit. But once home with both I was fine - went out to lunch the next day! I didn't drive though- I didn't for six weeks as recommended.

BritInAus · 27/12/2020 00:33

Wow, next day?! I was in five nights - including the night I had the C section at 1am. Not in UK.

CantStandMeow · 27/12/2020 00:35

Baby born 9.30 am, went home lunch time following day. 5 years ago so could have stayed one more night if I wanted.

elliejjtiny · 27/12/2020 00:36

4 days with dc4 and 8 days with dc5. Both babies were in nicu though.

caringcarer · 27/12/2020 00:38

I went home after 3 days but my Mum was came to look after us. She wished me off to bed when I got home.

ClaireP20 · 27/12/2020 00:39

They asked if I was ready to go home.the day after...they used to keep you in for a week, but now they want you out asap. Luckily my sister is a neonatal nurse and told me to say that I would prefer to stay another day as I didn't feel ready to go home. It was great advice. It was no problem to them, they are told to ask you but actually it is major surgery and you should be looked after by professionals for another day. It made the world of difference in terms of recovery. When you go home, you will move around more than you do at hospital. So try to stay another day. Trust me on this please.

Do not be afraid to ask for pain relief. Say you need it before you actually do, because they will always forget you or make you wait an hour. Take in paracetamol and top yourself up with this too. Don't tell the nurses about the paracetamol.

Ignore the nurses if they say you should 'top up with formula'. I had a big baby, and was told this by a nurse the day after he was born. I was livid. Luckily I have 3 kids and am in my 40s, so a seasoned pro, and was able to tell her that was utter rubbish and a baby's size has no bearing on milk production.

Take in chocolates and, when you leave, say thank you. Write a thank you note. It means alot.

When you get home, stay in your pjs. Get a couple of nice pairs. Do not get dressed. Just look after the baby, relax, do nothing else, if that is possible.

It was a wonderful and positive experience for me, both times, and I would have another elective in a heartbeat.

PiratePetespajamas · 27/12/2020 00:40

5 nights the first (EMCS, I was a mess), 4 the second (ELCS, generally much more straightforward - baby and I were great but I had an allergic reaction to the blood thinner so they kept me in an extra night and I asked to stay a 4th - it was this time of year, very quiet, I knew I’d get more rest and help in hospital!).

ilovetomatoes · 27/12/2020 00:41

In the UK I had the baby at 3pm and was out by 11am the next day. I was very happy with this. Second baby and I hated being on the ward. Just wanted to get home. First baby also a c section, I was overseas and was in 4 nights.

funkylittlegoldfinch · 27/12/2020 00:41

Baby born at around 3pm and out by 6pm next day.... maternity ward was hell on earth and I was going to discharge us both.,, (baby was a ok btw)

DreamingInColours · 27/12/2020 00:43

EMCS Monday morning, discharged 4pm Tuesday. Was desperate to leave at that stage to be honest.

Ilovesausages · 27/12/2020 00:44

I think it was day 3 with DS - I was a weepy mess!

I think it was day 2 with DD and although it was straightforward and I recovered well fast overall on day 2 I was still a bit shaky and unsteady. DH had to carry the car seat because I couldn’t.

I know for some women they want to get home ASAP but I think there should be more support generally postpartum.

hmb255 · 27/12/2020 00:46

2 nights with the first and 1 night with the second

cabbageking · 27/12/2020 00:48

8 days and had to beg to be let out for second child. Had my own room and the care was exceptional.

Councilworker · 27/12/2020 00:52

3 days because I was on antidepressants which can potentially cause withdrawal issues in baby so they wanted to monitor him rather than me.
As well as asking for pain relief also ask for peppermint oil in water for any trapped wind. It's miraculous stuff. I recovered much faster from my section than I did the forceps delivery and episiotomy with my first. It was all very calm in theatre and I had skin to skin within 25 minutes and got him to latch. He then shat all over me. What a charmer!

Bergmum · 27/12/2020 00:54

3 nights with 1st & 2nd. 5 nights with 3rd due to pre eclampsia and jaundiced baby and 1 night with my 4th.

Recovered best after my last one as I was more active and slept much better in my own quiet bed.

Ticklemynickel · 27/12/2020 04:14

1 night. Baby born at 10.30am, out at 6pm the next day. No visitors allowed on ward due to Covid so it was actually easier at home. Just made sure I kept on top of my pain relief and it was fine.

NewMumSoon1 · 27/12/2020 04:50

I got sepsis almost immediately after my section 16 days ago. I was in for a further 5 nights. I felt rubbish the first 2/3 days but now I feel almost normal! Mine wasn't an elective section though x

Nubbin · 27/12/2020 05:06

ELCS in July this year - baby born at 4pm - I went home at 8am the next morning. They were v keen to have you leave if possible due to Covid. It was fine.

redfernsydney · 27/12/2020 06:45

emergency c sec late on a Sunday night. home Tuesday morning (pre covid )
