They asked if I was ready to go home.the day after...they used to keep you in for a week, but now they want you out asap. Luckily my sister is a neonatal nurse and told me to say that I would prefer to stay another day as I didn't feel ready to go home. It was great advice. It was no problem to them, they are told to ask you but actually it is major surgery and you should be looked after by professionals for another day. It made the world of difference in terms of recovery. When you go home, you will move around more than you do at hospital. So try to stay another day. Trust me on this please.
Do not be afraid to ask for pain relief. Say you need it before you actually do, because they will always forget you or make you wait an hour. Take in paracetamol and top yourself up with this too. Don't tell the nurses about the paracetamol.
Ignore the nurses if they say you should 'top up with formula'. I had a big baby, and was told this by a nurse the day after he was born. I was livid. Luckily I have 3 kids and am in my 40s, so a seasoned pro, and was able to tell her that was utter rubbish and a baby's size has no bearing on milk production.
Take in chocolates and, when you leave, say thank you. Write a thank you note. It means alot.
When you get home, stay in your pjs. Get a couple of nice pairs. Do not get dressed. Just look after the baby, relax, do nothing else, if that is possible.
It was a wonderful and positive experience for me, both times, and I would have another elective in a heartbeat.
