How long was your hospital stay after c-section?

I’m currently 34 weeks and down to have an elective c-section (date not booked yet) but just wondering what everyone’s experiences were of how long you stayed in hospital?

OP posts:

Interesting to see how many were let home the next day....I'm having twins so expect a NICU stay so imagine I'll be in for a few days?

Sceptre86 · 27/12/2020 07:35

3 nights with my dd and 2 with ds but only because I had dd waiting for me at home. In my experience you get more rest at hospital. I second taking paracetamol and setting your phone so you have reminders of when to ask for painkillers. At least for the first 24 hours as you will need them. It is good to be up after the first 12-24 hours once your catheter has been removed but don't push yourself too much as it can do more harm than good.

5 days with DS (4) - he dropped birth weight and I had a urine infection.

FollowThatStarTonight · 27/12/2020 07:36

Even pre-covid I was sent home 23 hours after my elective section.

My emergency section I stayed 2 nights after because I felt a lot worse and was full of drugs.

eurochick · 27/12/2020 07:40

Just over 36 hours. The section was at 9pm so I was in two nights.

Preparedtobetoldimwrong · 27/12/2020 07:48

12 years ago. Went in on the Monday eve, in early labour. Labour on and off till Tuesday afternoon, then stopped. Tried to get him moving again, then had an emergency section early hours of Wednesday. Wanted to go hone on Thursday but was persuaded to stay in till Friday morning.

Donotgogentle · 27/12/2020 07:52

ELCS - discharged after 28 hours with a packet of paracetamol, felt well.

Dowermouse · 27/12/2020 08:09

Emcs 1 48 hrs.
Emcs 2 24 hrs.

Dowermouse · 27/12/2020 08:10

E for emergency , not elective btw.

Morgan12 · 27/12/2020 08:17

I was next day too. Section was at 1pm on Wednesday and I was home for 5pm Thursday.

This suited me tbh. I hate staying in hospitals. Much more settled at home.

krj2688 · 27/12/2020 08:27

One night for me after a general anaesthetic c section. X

Terracottasaur · 27/12/2020 08:30

I had an emergency c section and was in for 2 nights afterwards.

Post natal wards are hell on Earth - the less time you can spend in one the better!

Pickypolly · 27/12/2020 08:34

Less than 24 hours I was home.
Which was good as I had another child to care for and too much to do.
I was worried they would make me stay longer as I had pre eclampsia but thankfully I was allowed home.

MindyStClaire · 27/12/2020 08:47

One emergency (very straightforward), one elective (which was more complicated). Two nights both times. The elective was this year and so I was asked if I wanted to go home after one night. Night two had been very difficult with cluster feeding on my first (very normal) and so I chose to stay in in case I need help with the latch etc. It was the right call, I felt much more ready to leave the next day. One midwife told me I'd done the right thing, I got the impression she wasn't overly keen on post section women leaving the next day.

I did have excellent care both times though, our NHS maternity unit is brilliant.

Macblondie · 27/12/2020 08:51

1 night a few years ago. Realised as soon as I started walking to the car that it was too soon. I was only told to take paracetamol for the pain too. Next time, I would try to insist on staying in longer, and push for some stronger painkillers.

Littlemissnutcracker · 27/12/2020 08:56

I had my baby early Monday morning and was home Saturday. Not in UK. Shocked how early some went home. I only felt ready then.

ivfbeenbusy · 27/12/2020 09:20

@Macblondie

Unfortunately paracetamol is the standard pain killer - unlikely to get anything else out of them. I had morphine I think for the first 12 hours and then after that they don't like you on anything stronger than paracetamol

jillypill · 27/12/2020 09:27

I think this is one reason so many people report different experiences after their CS. Obviously if you are in longer & on strong medication it's very different.

I was sent on my way the next morning & told to take paracetamol, didn't realise there were other options. After my appendix was removed I was in for 5 days & on morphine.

ivfbeenbusy · 27/12/2020 09:30

@jillypill

It's the added dimension of breastfeeding though that complicates things which presumably wouldn't have been a factor when you had your appendix out......

The NHS guidance is you can't take codeine or aspirin etc as a painkiller whilst breastfeeding

jillypill · 27/12/2020 09:33

Oh I realise that but lots of women don't bf & I think most people get better after care in hospital unless it's mother's giving birth. I've had 5 different operations buts it's only after having babies I've found you are just expected to get on with it.

Rainb0wDrops · 27/12/2020 09:34

Baby born at 7am and home 3pm the following day.
I'm due another c section in a few months and think I'll ask to stay 2 nights. With the first I could come home and rest properly but with a toddler at home I don't think that will happen!

whiteflower84 · 27/12/2020 09:40

Emergency C Section late Saturday morning, begged to go home early Sunday evening... best thing ever really! Although they warned me I wouldn't be able to take the morphine with me Confused I'd only had one dose!

MindyStClaire · 27/12/2020 09:40

I had paracetamol and diclofenac in hospital, sent home with the same which I stepped down to paracetamol and ibuprofen. It was also made clear to me that I could have something stronger if necessary. Some of the stories I read on here horrify me.

Oh, and by all means bring your own paracetamol (I think some hospitals make you), but absolutely tell the staff you're taking it! It's terrible advice to hide it, you don't want an accidental paracetamol overdose.

A month, but my ore eclampsia turned into full blown eclampsia after my daughter was delivered, which is very rare, then due to that my kidneys started to fail, post partum renal failure, which is a known complication of pre eclampsia..

All recovered but had a year of follow up visits to hospital ,..and a shit load of doctors try to convince me to be sterilised. With my gp taking up the good fight and trying to convince me for years after as they didn’t think I could survive another pregnancy. I always said no, I don’t know why as I didn’t wish another child anyway. I just didn’t wish the choice to be removed in my twenties.
