Missing cheese, wine and Baileys!

With it being the Christmas season, anyone missing the staple Christmas foods - lots of cheeses, wine and of course hot chocolate Baileys?!

I'm not much of a drinker usually anyway, but I feel like I'm missing out! Just pleased that there are no Christmas parties I'm missing out on!

Yes! I’m craving a lovely cold glass of wine and I rarely drank wine anyway.

I also want Brie and salmon mousse (not together!)

This is the fourth time I’ve been pregnant over Christmas (hopefully 3rd DC) so I’m used to it and this year it’s easier as there’s nothing social to miss out on anyway.

Nesski · 13/12/2020 23:09

@MsHedgehog add charcuterie boards, oh man I want deli meat so bad.

Funkypolar · 13/12/2020 23:25

I had a sip of my mum’s red wine the other day with a (well done) steak and it tasted so good.

SquirtleSquad · 13/12/2020 23:25

The Christmas I was pregnant I had a lovely glass of baileys with milk. It was my one treat Grin

Luckyelephant1 · 13/12/2020 23:34

I'm missing mulled wine, Baileys and allll the smelly cheeses!

tofuschnitzel · 13/12/2020 23:38

There are plenty of nice cheeses that you can still eat! Deli meat is ok to eat during pregnancy as well. The guidance for cured meat is only to be careful, not to avoid completely.

fruitpastille · 13/12/2020 23:43

You can have the cheese if it's cooked - baked camembert? A dash of baileys in a hot chocolate would be extremely low alcohol.

biteysaurus · 14/12/2020 03:14

I'd love a cold glass of sparkling wine and some Camembert Xmas Smile And pâté!

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 08:32

Oh yes!! I love a drink especially at Christmas.... I miss baileys, wine, g&t, whisky and ginger, brandy, a champagne cocktail ... sigh... then there’s the pate, Camembert and Stilton!
It’s tough... probably won’t have any next year either due to breast feeding.
That’s good to know I can have baked Camembert... I may re add that to the shopping list!

Whiffle77 · 14/12/2020 08:36

Stilton is fine to have @LittleTiger007! It says so on nhs website

Teakind · 14/12/2020 08:41

@LittleTiger007 you can eat what you like while breastfeeding : ) the occasional alcoholic drink is ok too, in fact the best time to drink is while you’re feeding them as it takes 20mins to enter your system so by their next feed it should be out x

BlenheimOrange · 14/12/2020 08:48

Baked Camembert is your friend! Also all sorts of hard cheeses including stilton. If they’re hard they don’t need to be pasteurised.

I’ll allow myself a small glass of wine with Xmas dinner. It had just better be good wine 😉

I think with the Baileys you’d just have a duty to dilute it in a big hot chocolate Grin. Lidl dundalgan one is lower alcohol too.

What I really miss is pate (smoked salmon, smoked mackerel) but I think if I make my own then eat it completely fresh, it can’t possibly have higher risk of anything than eg just the fish with cream cheese on a bagel, which would be totally fine.

barbiemummy20 · 14/12/2020 08:57

I kept thinking about baileys don't even usually bother with it, I am excited for my alcohol free koppaberg, love the stuff! 🎄

luxxlisbon · 14/12/2020 08:58

I literally just googled to see if alcohol free baileys existed yesterday! Sp many beers, wines and even spirits come with zero alcohol these days but no baileys.

I think I will allow myself a baileys hot choc on Christmas!

Crustmasiscoming · 14/12/2020 09:01

My pregnancies always seem to include Christmas and my birthday. So annoying as I would absolutely love a really gorgeous bottle of shiraz. I have even dreamed about it haha!

I'm not missing out on cheese though - I've been scoffing brie like there's no tomorrow. As long as it's pasteurized you should be absolutely fine to have it. The Listeria risk is so low that I don't even worry about it. But i understand that everyone makes their own risk assessments during pregnancy.

MsHedgehog · 14/12/2020 09:14

So glad I’m not the only one! It’s been tough!

I also had my wedding in September (should have got married in June but cancelled because of covid. Had a micro wedding after I got pregnant), and it was frustrating drinking sparkling elderflower whilst everyone else got to enjoy champagne!

I know a tiny bit of baileys is fine, but I’ve just avoided all and any alcohol. But good to know about hard cheeses and unpasteurised - I assumed all unpasteurised is bad so I even avoid Parmesan in my pasta!

@luxxlisbon - I’ve already done this...twice! Had no luck!

I’m dying for a glass of red wine and some goats cheese. Literally every day I crave goats cheese.

And champagne. We have some gorgeous champagne on the top of the drinks cabinet and every time I see it I want to cry. I’ve got some Nosecco for Christmas Day, that’s the same, right?? 😭

SunnySideUp2020 · 14/12/2020 09:21

@MsHedgehog
I feel you!
Also had my wedding recently and couldn't even enjoy a glass of champagne 😅

And now xmas, missing the deli, the pates, the cider (not a fan of wine!), the baileys and all the delicious cakes with raw eggs!!

dementedpixie · 14/12/2020 09:22

Hard unpasteurised cheese is ok e.g. parmesan
Hard blue cheese is ok e.g. Stilton

Soft mould ripened/blue cheese is only ok if cooked even if it says its pasteurised. Its to do with moisture content which is why Hard cheeses are ok

dementedpixie · 14/12/2020 09:23

Arent cakes cooked so the egg won't be raw any more?

Plus soft cooked eggs are ok if they are lion stamped

IdblowJonSnow · 14/12/2020 09:28

I really don't understand why some pregnant women feel that they can't have a glass of wine or baileys.
Stick to one or two a few times a week, no problem?
My GP said it was ok to have up to 7 units per week, spread out over the week. - I didn't as I'm not much of a drinker.

luxxlisbon · 14/12/2020 09:32

@IdblowJonSnow
The current UK advice is that the safest thing is to avoid alcohol. If you want to drink 7 units a week then it is your choice but there is nothing wrong with a woman choosing to stick to the official guidlines.

dementedpixie · 14/12/2020 09:33

Maybe its because they've been told to avoid any alcohol. It used to be regarded as ok to have a few drinks per week but I think its now discouraged

MsHedgehog · 14/12/2020 09:49

@IdblowJonSnow Maybe because the official guidance says don’t have any alcohol, and in fact that’s the guidance in a lot of countries so it’s not just the UK being extra cautious.

I know the likelihood of harm from a glass of wine every now and then is low, but I would rather err on the side of caution, as would a lot of women. Not sure why you’re so surprised at that...

@Rachetine My work friend gave me Nosecco for my virtual work hen party, to disguise that I wasn’t drinking...it was, okay... One of my wedding gifts was a bottle of non alcoholic sparkling wine, and it was really tasty and almost like the real thing. I just can’t remember what brand it was!
