Missing cheese, wine and Baileys!

With it being the Christmas season, anyone missing the staple Christmas foods - lots of cheeses, wine and of course hot chocolate Baileys?!

I'm not much of a drinker usually anyway, but I feel like I'm missing out! Just pleased that there are no Christmas parties I'm missing out on!

My GP said it was ok to have up to 7 units per week, spread out over the week.

Official advice from the NHS is that there is no safe amount of alcohol. They advise pregannt women to avoid alcohol completely. It's the same here in Australia.

I don't think it's fair to say that you don't understand why they "feel they can't". They have made a decision not to do it, based on the information that they have available to them.

I eat lots of foods that pregannt women are routinely advised to avoid, but I did my own research first and made my own decision based on that. I wouldn't tell another pregnant woman that they shouldn't "feel they can't". Pregnant women are free to make their own judgements on what they should and shouldn't consume.

@SunnySideUp2020 I'm curious about uncooked cake. Can you give an example?

Luckyelephant1 · 14/12/2020 10:03

@dementedpixie who said they aren't eating cakes??

Luckyelephant1 · 14/12/2020 10:04

Sorry cross post, I think I missed the post where someone said about uncooked cake. Ignore me

espressoontap · 14/12/2020 10:24

My DD is 12 weeks but I've had to go dairy and egg free as she's reacting to it - this will be my 3rd Christmas (not in a row, although it was 2 in a row as fed DS for 16 months) with no Baileys or nice chocolate. I tried the vegan Baileys and it was rank.

SunnySideUp2020 · 14/12/2020 10:49

@dementedpixie
Like tiramisu, chocolate lava cake or anything that has an eggy cold mousse...
I eat all the other cakes though don't worry @Luckyelephant1 (and i know where the extra weight is coming from- not baby)
I crave sweet stuff and love baking so it has become an obsession 😁

popcorndiva · 14/12/2020 10:53

I am missing all food as can't eat anything unless its dry cornflakes or a dry pancake due to morning sickness. Worried I won't be able to stomach any of the Christmas Dinner

SunnySideUp2020 · 14/12/2020 11:07

@popcorndiva
You have all my sympathy.
How far along are you?
Mine started to ease at around 10 weeks.
Hopefully the end of morning sickness isn't too far for you and you get to enjoy some of the xmas food...

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 14/12/2020 11:07

I just eat whatever cheese I want, I don’t worry about that too much as the risk is so low.

popcorndiva · 14/12/2020 11:11

8 weeks but my last pregnancy it went on forever though didn't start this early so hoping this might ease soon well enough to it eat a meal anyway

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 11:12
@LittleTiger007 you can eat what you like while breastfeeding : ) the occasional alcoholic drink is ok too, in fact the best time to drink is while you’re feeding them as it takes 20mins to enter your system so by their next feed it should be out x
Hallelujah!

This just made my day 😂

Scottishskifun · 14/12/2020 11:17
@MsHedgehog add charcuterie boards, oh man I want deli meat so bad.
You can have a deli board just freeze for 4 days and defrost in the fridge first 😊

mum2bin2021 · 14/12/2020 11:23

I would absolutely LOVE a baileys hot chocolate on Christmas Day but I'll be spending it with the in laws who would massively judge me for doing so Blush

Thatwentbadly · 14/12/2020 11:25

@LittleTiger007

Oh yes!! I love a drink especially at Christmas.... I miss baileys, wine, g&t, whisky and ginger, brandy, a champagne cocktail ... sigh... then there’s the pate, Camembert and Stilton! It’s tough... probably won’t have any next year either due to breast feeding. That’s good to know I can have baked Camembert... I may re add that to the shopping list!
Unless your unluckily enough like me to have a child with allergies (this will be my 3rd Christmas without Brie) then you can eat abs drink what you want when your pregnant. Obviously you need to be sober enough to look after a bay.
Scottishskifun · 14/12/2020 11:37

I can't stomach the smell of alcohol when pregnant especially red wine, beer and whisky to the level that if my husband has them to drink he has to sleep in a different room!

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 11:40

Oh bless you @Scottishskifun, I certainly can’t bear the taste. I tried to drink a little wine a couple of months back. Sipping it and pouring it into my husband’s glass when people weren’t looking as my pregnancy was secret. But I couldn’t even sip it, it made me feel sick.

Trousersareoverrated · 14/12/2020 11:57

I’m missing rare steak and wine!

Would love to find out which GP has said that a few glasses are fine 🙄 They would definitely be in trouble for giving advice contrary to the NICE guidelines. I really don’t understand why some people think that their personal GP knows something that all researchers and medics across the world don’t.

MsHedgehog · 14/12/2020 12:11

@Trousersareoverrated OMG yes, steak! That's another one! DH and I are huge steak lovers and cook one every couple of weeks. Having a well done steak with juice whilst he enjoys his medium steak with red wine has been depressing!

OP posts:
Trousersareoverrated · 14/12/2020 12:29

@MsHedgehog I won’t even eat a well done streak. Feels like such a waste of a lovely piece of meat. First thing I want to do after the baby pops out is go out for a nice steak and wine.

MsHedgehog · 14/12/2020 12:37

@Trousersareoverrated You shouldn't - it's not fun! No matter how much you try and dress it in garlic butter and béarnaise, it still tastes burnt!

We had steak on our wedding day (nothing else I wanted from the menu). That was just under three months ago and I'm still bitter that I didn't enjoy my meal on my own wedding day! Doesn't help that DH has mentioned a few times how good a meal it was!

Maybe we'll go back when we have the baby...

OP posts:
LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 12:50

Oooo @Trousersareoverrated rare steak..... mmmmm. I’m so hungry all the time at the moment! Lol!

I agree with the shock at the 7 measures of drink a week comment. I think that’s the healthy advised amount for a woman - not a pregnant one!

LittleTiger007 · 14/12/2020 12:52

My husband has kindly avoided having steak in solidarity with me. It has to be so rare it’s virtually still running around the field ... so that will have to wait. Grin

PurBal · 14/12/2020 12:55

Am I the only one basically eating all the cheese? It does mean I've had to abandon my usual cheese shop and only buying from supermarkets so I know it'll be pasteurized. But the risk is so low.

I was reprimanded for not having had my second MMR because of the rubella risk but 1. there have been 16 cases of rubella in the UK in the last 5 years (5 of those in 2015) and 2. some studies show that the protection against rubella after one vaccine (not mumps or measles) is 97%, I was told by a nurse that protection is "only" 80% after one dose but that's still higher than a lot of vaccines. I decided against it.

Alcohol wise: M&S do a good alcohol free mulled wine and their alcohol free fizz is okay too.

Scottishskifun · 14/12/2020 13:00

@PurBal nope I eat the cheeses as well but like you from supermarket sources rather than my local deli.

I think like everything with pregnancy it's personal choice and risk assessing. My husband is a environmental health officer so I'm fully aware there have been more listeria cases associated with frozen sweetcorn then cheese! But because of my husband I won't buy prepared fruit or veg as the risk compared to buying the solid veg is much greater.

PurBal · 14/12/2020 13:05

No steak is the worst.
