Are pregnancy pillows worth the money?

I'm now 22 weeks and suffering from breathlessness if I sleep on my back yet feel as if I'm squashing my stomach if I sleep on either my left or right side. Does anyone have any tips for the best pregnancy pillow? Or is there some kind of magic formula with regular pillows that I haven't discovered yet?
Thanks for any tips.

You need a wedge pillow! You can get them in mothercare...slide under bump when on side and it lifts it up slightly and takes the strain off you - I loved mine!

Also, you can get normal pillow and sleep with it between legs....

Oh and a v shaped pillow from Argos is fab for back support when sat on sofa, only about £7 and is brilliant for feeding when baby on the scene

Thomcat · 22/10/2007 16:04

Those V shaped pillows are FAB.

Megglevampire · 22/10/2007 16:04

You can make a long tube by sweing up a length of fabric the width of two normal pillows and then stuff them into this tube et voila a pregancy pillow as cheap as chips. That is what I did. You can buy these extra long pillowcases in France and spain, they are really handy.

Ps you need to stop sleeping on your back at this stage if you can - the baby getting too heavy for back sleeping

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 16:05

Yes. They are fab for when you have the bump, great for supporting baby when feeding and excellent for baby to lean against when trying to sit up.

Thomcat, how is your little dd3? Any name yet? Haven't been on MN too much lately.

Sorry hijack over..

Wow, thank you all for the speedy responses! Much appreciated. Will definitely look into the Mothercare pillow. Any other good makes around? Some do look terribly expensive for what they are...
I've also got some long pillow cases, so shall try that too.

The wedge is £10 but imo very worth the money - I ended up having a c section so was useful after as well as it supported my tummy and didn't pull my stitches

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 22/10/2007 16:18

I got a V-shaped pillow when pregnant (2 and a half years ago) and it was the best pillow I ever bought! I actually still use it, comfy as it is!

LilBloodRedWantsGore · 22/10/2007 16:20

I got the Mothercare long body pillow! I still sleep with it now

sfxmum · 22/10/2007 16:20

I got a V shape one and a wedge, both invaluable during pregnancy and later with BF

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 16:24

I got one reduced in Boots for about £13. Maybe use your Advantage card points so free really. Def shop around as differeint prices but I would buy one rather than make one. Worth the money.

MrsMcSpooky · 22/10/2007 16:33

I've been looking at these too I have been using a pillow between my legs and a couple of cushions to my right side so that I cannot roll onto my back at night but I need more I was on ebay last night looking at the long body length pillows (best price new was about £18) and thought I would get one of those to tuck down the length of me and support my bump (I'm 28 weeks) but those V pillows also sound great for the couch - and then there's the wedge - utterly confused now!

NotQuiteCockney · 22/10/2007 16:35

I have a long tubularish pillow, and, 3 years after having last baby, I still sleep with it. Good for supporting the top leg when I sleep on my side! (Ok, it's the second maternity pillow I've gone through, but very much worth it - for pregnancy sleeping, breastfeeding, and now just normal sleeping)

i used a widgey cushion so i could use it later for breastfeeding and also for supporting ds when he was learning to sit up.

sabinar · 22/10/2007 21:15

I just ordered one of these - tried one out and it was fabulous, plus apparently also good for breast feeding and putting LO in when they are wee, and helping them to sit when they are a little older (as others have mentioned).

Can't wait for it to arrive! It's a little more like a beanbag than a standard pillow. A little more expensive than some of the others suggested - can't tell you for certain whether it's worth the extra or not, but happy to report back once it's arrived

CappuScreamO · 22/10/2007 21:16

I just got a v shaped back pillow from Argos for a fiver

exactly the same

MrsMcSpooky · 23/10/2007 12:10

That one looks fab Sabinar - it would do the job of the sausage and the v shaped one

wobbegong · 23/10/2007 17:46

ooh sabinar, I just had one of them delivered yesterday. I have no idea why I didn't give in and splash out on on earlier- it is absolutely fantastic! I adore it!!!! I was thinking it was best to make do with regular pillows, but this is a different league.

mclaughlinsamantha · 23/10/2007 18:57

I got one of these from the Baby Show at the weekend:

www.dreamgenii.com

Expensive, but having used it since then it's been a godsend. Really helped with all my aches and pains and given me a decent nights sleep at last. The best thing about it is that you don't have to haul it from one side to the other while you are sleeping - you just turn ver as normal and it supports you on either side

annieshaf · 23/10/2007 20:48

Are pregnancy pillows worth the money? ABSOLUTELY

Could not have done without mine which is now on its second pregnancy. I use the slightly more expensive long body sausage kind and imo its worth the extra. If budget is tight I would look on ebay. Was also good as a bf'ing pillow afterwards.
Good luck

slim22 · 24/10/2007 02:00

yes yes and yes.
Get a boomerang shape that will double up as a breastfeeding pillow.

AussieSim · 24/10/2007 04:59

Absolute must have IMO! So get a good one. One with little beads in it not normal pillow material.
