Pessary induction

How long did it take from pessary to contractions / waters going?
Second baby but only 36 weeks...
It's been 5 hours nearly, and nothing but a few mild cramps 😩
Think I'm here for the long haul....!

For me it took 12 hours and 2 pessaries. 1st at around midday, 2nd around 8pm. Waters broke at midnight, baby born at 6am.

turtletum · 05/12/2020 16:57

So I had pessary with my first. First pessary just gave mild cramps. Got second one 24 hours later, nothing happened for 6 hours. I was grumpy and fed up. Then my waters went and that kicked me into established within 30 minutes and baby was born less than 6 hours later. Some ladies on the ward seemed to be more sensitive to the pessary and labour started soon after, others were there like me, taking a long time.

YawnyOwl · 05/12/2020 16:59

Why being induced at 36 weeks?!

TheGriffle · 05/12/2020 17:00

I was induced at 38 weeks but my waters had already popped 24hrs before but no other signs of labour. Had the pessary at 12pm baby here at 5.34pm. Took a couple of hours and a lovely stroll round the hospital for things to kick in though.

Sorrytmipic · 05/12/2020 17:02

1 pessary, 11 hours later they broke my waters manually, baby born 3hrs later

Pumpertrumper · 05/12/2020 17:06

I was first baby 37 weeks. Pessary went in at 11am and ‘cramps’ started mid afternoon. By 8pm (ish) contractions were in full swing.

Midwives kept calling them ‘just pessary pains’ even though they were proper contractions and I was dilating. I got pretty annoyed about that! By 10am the next morning I’d got to 4cm and headed to Labour.

DS was out by 5pm

Bellbell1199 · 05/12/2020 17:13

@yawnyowl because of reduced movements, reduced growth and poor umbilical blood flow to baby.

The thing that really bothered me about my induction, and I’d advise you to watch out for, was how ‘overreacting’ I was made how feel and how focused on ‘what should be happening’ a lot of the staff were rather than what was actually happening.

Silly stuff like:

Midwife 1: You must tell us if you start bleeding at any point
Me: (Later that night) ‘I’ve got some blood on my pad’
Midwife: (looking totally bemused) yes you’re in Labour you will bleed a bit.

Me: I’m in a lot of pain and these contractions are every 6 minutes. I’m exhausted (because they kicked in just before bed) can I get some pain relief so I can’t sleep.
Midwife: they’re just pessary pains
Me: I’m in pain. I can’t sleep!
(They felt the same as ‘active Labour btw)

Midwife: right so you’re 5cm. We’ll leave you for 4-6 hours now and then check you again. It takes a fair while with first timers so just try and rest.
Me: (30 minutes later) Oh god I feel like my bums going to explode. Can you check me again?
Midwife: (almost rolling her eyes) too much checking can lead to infection. We really need to wait at least the 4 hours.
Me: I need to push. CHECK ME!

  • I was 9cm! We were pushing 20-30 minutes later.

I was really shocked how little credit was given to a woman knowing her own body and how I didn’t feel listened to at times.

Lauren83 · 05/12/2020 17:23

They couldn't get me going, I had 3 or 4 they gave up and I had a section 36 hours after the 1st pessary

Bellbell1199 · 05/12/2020 17:29

I didn't react well to my last induction.
The pessary just didn't work, 3 days to get me to 3cm 😩

I was hoping second time round would be quicker.
But I guess as I'm only 36 weeks my body is nowhere near naturally Ready either, so that doesn't help.

I was 38 weeks- pessary put in at 9pm, DS born at 7:47 the next morning. So less than 12 hours start to finish. Hope it’s not too long for you OP!

ImaSababa · 05/12/2020 18:19

Pessary in at 6:30am, and contractions started a couple of hours later. I was in active labour by midday, and moved to the delivery suite.

Bikingbear · 05/12/2020 18:28

Second baby, Two pessaries 12 hours apart,
2.5 hours after the second one I went in the bath to ease the backache, another 2 hours later got out the bath. Baby was born in WTF moment 15 mins later.

My friend has a similar WTF just happened second birth with a pessary.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/12/2020 18:30

Pessary in, mild cramps a few hours later, proper contractions about 8 hours later, waters went 12 hours later. DD eventually born 24 hours later by EMCS.

Good luck!! Make sure to update us when baby is here!

fatkitchen · 05/12/2020 21:26

I had a pessary induction with ds. It took about 2 hours for him to be born. Shocked the midwives as I was only 6cm dilated Grin

Think my body was just so desperate to get him out.

Yes this happened to me with dd. They gave me a paracetamol and a codeine pill and tried to send me home. They offered to run me a warm Bath the
fatkitchen · 05/12/2020 21:30

Sorry follow on

They offered to run me a warm bath then because I refused to leave as I knew baby was on the way. They wouldn't check me because they said it was too soon-
She was born in the bath 10 minutes later Grin then I had a haemorrhage and had to be rushed to the consultant led unit.

Lockdownmum1010 · 05/12/2020 21:42

11 hours from pessary going in to first contraction, then baby was born 8 and a half hours later.

This is awful.

On the flip side, I was having contractions lasting a minute long every 2 minutes and never progressed beyond 2cm, even being in labour for about 30 hours.

endoftether51 · 05/12/2020 21:48

@Pumpertrumper same thing happened to me
They gave me paracetamol and told me it was the pessary
I was 8cm

endoftether51 · 05/12/2020 21:49

I was in labour within an hour of the pessary
I'm not convinced things hadn't already started before I got to the hospital though

timeforanother1 · 05/12/2020 22:06

How are you doing?

Pessary I had was Monday at 8am, by 10am I was in pain by 12pm I was in agony. Agony lasted until about 6pm, by 10pm I was in no pain, just shattered. They had to leave me all day Tuesday as apparently the pessary could have made labour start anytime. Same Wednesday... Wednesday at about 8/9pm I was told I'd have to have a csection the next day so nil by mouth from 12am. Thursday 7am I signed forms/ had the procedure explained. At 11am I was told I'd be sent home as they had no room in the afternoon for me. (I had been kept in for a week before induction because of 4 different issues). I was told I could have another pessary if I wanted to stay at hospital (of course I did they had said a week before I must not risk baby by leaving the hospital). They said they'd give the pessary 3 days to work again.
DP went mad at how we were messed about (no issues with emergencies but since learnt women were told about emergency cases coming in when they weren't). Anyway, they gave me the csection an hour after he moaned...

Everyone is different though. I've heard women have had lovely labours after a pessary.

Keep us updated Smile

Bellbell1199 · 05/12/2020 22:33

10.5 hours later, still nothing but on and off period pains.
😩
Just.Hope I'm dilated enough when they check at 24 hours to break my waters.

Hsve a toddler at home, I'm missing already, and can't stand the thought of not seeing him for a week, potentially 3 days labour and 2-3 maybe more days after depending how baby does post birth at 36 weeks!

Csx99 · 05/12/2020 22:34

5 days with 2 pessaries 32 hours each - was in a lot of pain but my cervix wouldn't dilate. I ended up on the hormone drip eventually gave birth 26 hours later

timeforanother1 · 07/12/2020 20:49

How's tbings @Bellbell1199
