Just looking for experiences of babies born at 36 weeks, and what kind of help (if any) they needed.
I'm being induced very soon at 36 weeks due to abnormal doppler, growth dropped and RM.
Estimated at 5lb 13oz ish as per scan today.

Hiya OP - I had DD at 35+5 after my waters broke early. She needed some antibiotics due to an infection so we were kept in for a week but apart from that she’s perfectly fine! She caught up to her milestones well before her first birthday and is now running around.

Also should say she was much smaller than your expected weight at 5 pounds exactly so that would be a good weight if accurate!

Please try not to worry - I’m sure all will be fine, your only a week off full term if that helps! Here for support x

I’m sorry you’re facing all this but try not to worry. I had a growth scan at 36 weeks which showed my DS had dropped down to the 5th percentile in weight and was estimated to weigh 5lb13oz. Although my doppler etc was normal they pushed for an induction at just 37 weeks. DS was born weighing 6lb10oz. He had been perfectly fine, little bit furry (downy hair on cheeks) but quick to breastfeed and no jaundice. Are you close to 37 weeks? Remember this is considered full term so the risks of any issues are very small. I’m sure all will be well and it sounds like a sensible decision. The weight may be a bit wrong too. It’s very hard to estimate accurately whilst they are in the womb. Good luck!

Thank you.
I'm 35+5 and due for induction Saturday bang on 36 weeks.
The options were to monitor every day until 37 weeks or just induce at 36 weeks.
Decided on 36 week as with growth tailing and the abnormal doppler, plus I had previous static growth with my son.
He stopped at 37 weeks and weighed 6lb 14oz, wasn't actually born until 39+5 as I wasnt being monitored with him!

I've just Done an emergency tiny baby order for delivery tomorrow, and put a shout out on my local group for anyone who knitted tiny baby cardigans locally and had a few responses.

Just a bit scary, the thought of nicu.
I won't be able To stay with her all The time will i?
My mil works there too and I feel its a bit close to home, as relationship isn't great with me or OH lately.

Mine weighed 5, 8 and completely healthy. Small but perfectly formed! That was actually 37 weeks so yours doesn't seem that small to me

BorisandHarriet · 03/12/2020 16:20

My DTs were born at 36+5 and were both just over or under 5lbs. Both were completely fine and didn’t need any intervention / nicu etc. Fingers crossed your little one is the same.

MarcelineMissouri · 03/12/2020 16:23

Ds1 was born at 36 weeks due to placenta problems. He weighed 6lb 10oz and was perfectly healthy other than a bit jaundiced for a couple of days. He needed no support of any kind. I know that’s not the case for al babies but remember that actually 37 weeks is classed as full term so it’s not quite as early as it sounds. Good luck x

icklekid · 03/12/2020 16:26

My daughter was born prematurely at 34 weeks and didn’t need any time in NICU so it definitely isn’t a given. She was quite small and needed tiny baby but I managed to breastfeed from day 2. We were in hospital for just over a week because of jaundice. I think at 36 weeks she should hopefully be fine.

Teacaketotty · 03/12/2020 16:28

Also just to say our baby wasn’t in NICU but SCBU and I could stay with her 24/7 if I wanted - would have had to sleep in the chair right enough but nobody will deny you access to your baby.

Avery7 · 03/12/2020 16:34

DS was born at 36 weeks due to my pre-eclampsia, weighing 5lb 3oz. He spent one night in the NICU because they were concerned about his breathing, & then a week in special care because he wasn't feeding well. He's now nearly 2 and has always been small for his age (he currently wears size 12-18 month clothes) & may be developmentally delayed (still not talking at all), but he's the happiest cheekiest loveliest little boy!

Tempusfudgeit · 03/12/2020 16:48

My daughter was born at 37+4 weighing 6lbs 14ozs. She spent 2 days in SCBU due to breathing issues (despite the steroid injections I'd had) I could see her anytime, the nurses even had me walk over there at 10pm, 2am and 6am for breastfeeding and skin to skin, the night after my complicated CS. It was strange being on the ward without her, but I knew she was in the best place. They also had two little material hearts, one for her and one down my top which I swapped every time I saw her. When she was discharged back to the ward they gave me some little souvenirs - her first babygrow, hat and tags. The staff made a potentially distressing time bearable. Good luck xx

Youvegotafriendinme · 03/12/2020 16:50

DS was born at 35+5 and was 5lb 2oz. He didn’t need any time in NICU or SCUBA and was Perfectly healthy apart from a bit of jaundice which went by itself after a week or two

Lovelydovey · 03/12/2020 16:52

I was born at 35 weeks with no issues, weighing just over 5lbs. Went into SCBU but more as a precaution and was expected to leave v soon but I picked up a chest infection in hospital which kept me there for several weeks. I’m fine - and once released home there were no lasting issues.

movingonup20 · 03/12/2020 16:52

I was born at 36 weeks, no help needed at all. That said every baby is different, some full term babies need help, some 34 weekers do not

Rhodxb · 03/12/2020 16:54

My daughter was born at 35 weeks and was perfectly healthy, no oxygen needed etc. We did have to stay in as she lost weight initially and then got jaundice so needed the bilibed but other than that all good. She was 5lb 12oz and from 6 months onwards has been 95th percentile for height and weight. She is now a tall, funny and bright almost 9 year old and in top sets across the board at school. Hope this reassures youSmile

Birdladybird · 03/12/2020 17:03

My 2 DDs were both born at 36 weeks, both times my waters broke early. No help needed at all, home after 3 days. 5lb 11ozs and 5lb 13ozs.

sunflowerdaysinmay · 03/12/2020 17:05

My lo was born spontaneously at 36+5 weighing 5lbs 13oz. He was jaundiced soon after being born so he stayed a few days in SCBU for phototherapy and was fed through a tube in his nose. Despite that being scary and upsetting we were discharged within a week and he has absolutely thrived since. He's now a happy and healthy 18 month old with lots of character. The HV has had no concerns with his physical & cognitive development and he seems to be growing and learning more every day. Hope this reassures you and that all goes ok 🌻 xx

Parker231 · 03/12/2020 17:09

DT’s were born at 36 weeks. No issues other than stayed in for a week as they were both too lazy to stay awake long enough to have their bottles.

GrumpyRightNow · 03/12/2020 17:14

I know mines a week later than your going to be but I was induced at 37 weeks with my DS, he weighed 4lb 9oz. We had to stay in for 24 hours to monitor his blood sugar levels and after that we were allowed home.

Hes always been in good health and gained weight quickly when he was born. He was 17lb by 5 months old, my DD didnt reach that weight till she was 10 months old!

Queenbee95 · 03/12/2020 17:14

Ds1 was born at 36+4 after my waters broke spontaneously and I went into labour. He was totally fine, low blood sugar for a day which went to normal itself. Had a 4 night stay in hospital (3 days for him, last day was for me)

SleeplessWB · 03/12/2020 17:16

God, my babies were massive! Both born at 37 weeks, dd1 was 8lb2 and DD2 was 7lb2... They were a bit jaundiced and had a bit of the downy hair but no issues.

Took · 03/12/2020 17:22

My youngest was born at exactly 36 weeks. He started off just fine but then developed Respiratory Distress Syndrome and was whisked away. Then one of his lungs collapsed and he needed an emergency procedure.

I'm not telling you this to scare you but just so you know things might not go as smoothly as you hope. I wish I'd pushed for steroids. They were mentioned but they decided they wouldn’t be needed at 36 weeks. I'd probably ask you doctor about them. I don’t know if there's any negative sides to being given them?

I was able to stay with my son day and night except when they were doing rounds or if there was something happening with one of the other babies.

Despite a rocky start he was well enough to come home at 2 weeks old and never had a problem from that day on!

MuchTooTired · 03/12/2020 17:23

My DTs were born at 36+5 due to severe pe. They weighed 6lb6oz and 7lb3oz. DD was in scbu for an hour as she wasn’t breathing properly when she was born, and we were out two days later (late section, kept in to monitor their blood sugar levels).

Good luck!

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 03/12/2020 17:25

I had ds at 35 weeks. Weighed 5-7..no nicu needed. Bf the next day. Home at a week as he had a bit of jaundice. Slept under a lamp next to me. I stayed in the week too! They let ds out weighing 4-12..

RosesforMama · 03/12/2020 17:28

My youngest was born at 36+5 by my dates (37+2 by scan). Compared with my 40 weekers she was much sleepier and less alert. Minor breathing issues (monitored but not taken to scbu) for first 36 hours until she had her heel prick, at which she screamed enough to clear her lungs and no problems after that!

Mo81 · 03/12/2020 19:27

My daugher was born at 36 weeks. She was fine they minitored blood sugers and temp for a few hours and we went home the next day. Shewas estimated to be 4lb and was 5lb7 please try not to worry
