Just looking for experiences of babies born at 36 weeks, and what kind of help (if any) they needed.
I'm being induced very soon at 36 weeks due to abnormal doppler, growth dropped and RM.
Estimated at 5lb 13oz ish as per scan today.

My waters broke at 36+5 dd was born the next day, 6lbs 2 she needed no help and we left hospital the next day. She did develop mild jaundice but that cleared quickly with no intervention.

Lou573 · 03/12/2020 19:33

Mine was 4lb 7 at 36+6, so pretty small. And absolutely fine after a bit of help with jaundice and blood sugars for a week. Exclusively breast fed for a long time.

Lou573 · 03/12/2020 19:34

Oh - I did have the steroids which helps

GirlCalledJames · 03/12/2020 19:38

Mine was delivered at 36 w because of vasa previa. He also had restricted growth. I had had steroids for his lungs and no special measures were needed.
He was weaker and sleepier than my first, who was full term, and it was harder to get him going with breastfeeding. He got quite jaundiced but didn’t need treatment.
I was born with restricted growth at 34 w myself and have never had any issues from it. I was 4 lb but only in an incubator for oneday.

Nephew was born at 36 weeks and perfectly healthy (spontaneous labour). No stay in NICU, just a bit small but caught up quickly.

TrufflyPig · 03/12/2020 19:48

First child induced a day before 37 weeks for similar reasons to you OP, small (5lb2oz) but perfectly healthy. She gained weight really quickly. She's taller than all the kids her age now!

Bellbell1199 · 03/12/2020 20:03

Thanks ladies, really reassured me for the most part!
Hopefully it'll be plain sailing for us!
If she does need nicu, hopefully It won't be for long, or I can at least stay with her. X

Dc1 was born at 36+1 weighing 5lbs. Spontaneous labour and had gestational diabetes through pregnancy. Home 13 hours after birth.
Dc3 was born at 39+4 weighing 4lbs10oz, induced due to poor growth and concern over Doppler reading. Spent 11days in nicu and transitional care before home.

My DS was born at 36+4 after my water broke and I went into natural labour. There had been resistance in the cord and IUGR since 32 weeks and I was due to be induced at 37 weeks but went into labour before then. My LO was born weighing 5lb 2oz and didn't need any assistance. We had to stay in hospital for 48 hours as he had low blood sugars within the first 12 hours and he was a bit jaundiced but didnt require any treatment for it. He is now a mad toddler!

My twins were 5.3 and 6.1 , at 36 weeks exactly.

The smaller one was fine straight away but the bigger one struggled to breathe, spent 8 days in NICU and needed CPAP for several days. It was a scary and stressful week but he is fine now.

Robinelf · 04/12/2020 20:18

I didn’t have the steroids either as there wasn’t time, so maybe that would have made a difference.

Sceptre86 · 04/12/2020 20:31

I went in for an induction at 36 weeks having lost almost all my waters but cervix closed. The induction failed, I was in for 10 days anyway before they decided to do a section, such early inductions have a low success rate statistically. With ds I had the same issues and went in for monitoring everyday from 37 weeks and held off having him till 40 weeks. Ds was 8lb 10oz at 40 weeks, dd was 5lb 10oz at 37wks. Dd had steroid injections to strengthen her lungs and latching issues, bf was difficult as she was a sleepy baby and tiny. Ds was easier in every way, he was bigger, drank better and slept well.

Depends completely on your circumstances and you obviously don't want any further risks to yourself or baby but I was glad I went for daily monitoring with ds. I wasn't told this was an option with dd otherwise I would have pushed for it. I was told induction was necessary for her health but when it failed over 10 days of me being in hospital there was still no urgency for giving me a section until I questioned why they were so keen for getting me in for an induction and then just leaving me in limbo.

Sceptre86 · 04/12/2020 20:35

Dd is on the 98th percentile for height. When she was born she was between 0.04-2% for her weight and is now on the 75th. The only issue I had noted were her gross motor skills aren't as good as other 4 year olds but we sought help from an NHS physio and she is coming on in leaps and bounds.

Whatthedoodle · 04/12/2020 20:43

Hi. I also had a 36 weeker. He was but for his gestation weighing 6lb 7. When he was born he had jaundice which was quite a struggle to get over so required a 10 day hospital stay, but other than that he was perfectly healthy. He had a tiny bit of trouble staying warm when he was born which is normal for preterm babies; he didn’t have much fat on him at all!
Good luck!!

Gorbie · 04/12/2020 20:49

My eldest was born 36+4, at 5.10lb was in SCBU for 10 days, he's now a strapping 14.5 years old that's taller then me and his dad!

Bedroomdilemma · 04/12/2020 20:57

My son was born at 35+5, weighed 6ibs1, no special care needed, breastfed immediately.

Bellbell1199 · 09/12/2020 06:54

Baby girl born at 36+3. 5lb 5oz.
In nicu now but minimal intervention so far.
Hoping to go down to her today and see if doctors will let her on the ward with me.
Breathing on her own so just being observed for now.

Congratulations! Hope she won’t be on nicu for too long and that you will be home cuddling on the sofa very soon!

Bellbell1199 · 11/12/2020 14:09

Born Tuesday morning, we got home last night.
Just struggling with feeding now but she's all good.

I had twins at 36 weeks exactly and ds was kept in for three days because he was under 2kg but apart from that, completely fine. DD had a few breathing problems and needed to be on oxygen for a while but was home within a week. Hope everything goes well for you, OP.

Europilgrim · 11/12/2020 14:14

oops - didn't read the update - congratulations!
