Is it normal to have headaches every day?

I’ve always had severe headaches, maybe once a week/fortnight before pregnancy.
But recently it’s every single day. I’m having to take paracetamol every day because of them, sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn’t.
Surely this isn’t right? I don’t know how I’m still coping cause some days I feel like my head is going to explode.. what should I do?

Not normal. Id mention it to the midwife if I were you.

41weekswithno2 · 03/12/2020 10:15

How far along are you?

SpamIAm · 03/12/2020 10:21

Is it early days OP? I had almost constant tension-type headaches, mostly tried to manage them with 4head, cool packs etc. If you're further along it can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia so you should speak to a midwife.

Queenbee95 · 03/12/2020 10:23

I’m 18+5. The past 2 weeks have just been an absolute nightmare, they have literally been constant

I had a lot of headaches in second trimester too op.

I did too. Paracetamol didn’t touch them. Disappeared at about 24 weeks (to be replaced with heartburn - the joy!). Now realised I get cyclical headaches so assume it’s something hormonal.

sophi1207 · 03/12/2020 10:29

I was having a lot of headaches around 15-16 weeks and mentioned this to the midwife and she said that 99% of headaches are hormone related and she would only be concerned if it was a lot later on eg. 3rd trimester as this could be a sign of preeclampsia x

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 03/12/2020 10:36

I had daily headaches throughout my pregnancy. I was eventually referred to a neurologist who told me pregnancy migraines can be quite common. It can be pretty miserable dealing with them every day! I was prescribed Dihydrocodeine which helped take the edge off.

bunhead34 · 03/12/2020 10:41

I had a period of very bad headaches everyday, they reduced a lot when I started drinking 3litres of water a day.
I found that paracetamol on its own did nothing, but the one with caffeine works. (65mg caffeine each tablet so if you take two in a day you're still within nhs guidelines for caffeine per day)

welshladywhois40 · 03/12/2020 11:14

My headaches were the worst between 12 and 20 weeks and needed to drink 2 litres by lunchtime to avoid them.

They have eased up now

Queenbee95 · 03/12/2020 11:27

I’m waking up every morning with them 😰

Definitely try drinking lots more water, you could be waking up dehydrated. Your body is creating extra blood volume and amniotic fluid just now so needs lots of water to do this.
Some hormonal headaches in second trimester seem normal though.

Mine said exactly this, something to do with hormones from the placenta?

Drink plenty, don't get hungry, I use some of the forehead type products "4Head" I think its called and that helps a hit and is fine in pregnancy

puppygalore · 03/12/2020 11:43

I had awful headaches and migraines in the early months with both my pregnancies. Only 4head helped, plus as pp said keeping full and hydrated and sometimes one of those cool pack things on my head and neck. I could only tolerate savoury things such as crisps or crackers and ginger tea but if I kept up regular nibbling it did seem to reduce the head pressure. It did pass as I got further along, but they were torture, you have all my sympathy!

stormtrooperjulian · 03/12/2020 11:56

I had a lot of bad headaches for the first half of my second trimester, most days I think, midwife said it was normal

Queenbee95 · 03/12/2020 13:46

Thanks ladies, I will definitely up my water intake. It’s just getting me down as I feel like paracetamol are not helping at all, I would usually take co-codamol (when not pregnant) but been told this is a no-go right now

Pregnacare multi vits gave me horrendous headache, the moment I stopped and just took vit D and folic acid my headaches went!

Bedsheets4knickers · 03/12/2020 13:48

Yep I had them a lot through both pregnancies, not nice but totally normal.

GreyishDays · 03/12/2020 13:53

Are they there actually as you wake up?
Pregnancy headaches are really common, but if they are really bad as present on waking it might be worth mentioning to a GP. Have a glass of water by your bed to drink as soon as you wake up in case it’s overnight dehydration. But if that doesn’t sort it out then maybe speak to someone.

Biglieyoutold · 03/12/2020 14:26

I have had them a lot in this headache. It's hormonal. It does eventually passes.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 03/12/2020 15:08

Co-codamol is safe in pregnancy. I was prescribed 30/500's in my last 2 pregnancies. I was told to stop taking it a few weeks before the birth so the baby isnt born with withdrawal. You should speak to your GP or midwife for advice if you're struggling.

abitfunny · 03/12/2020 15:13

I'm 19 weeks and have had the same issue, though not every single day. But when they come on they are so bad I can't do anything else. Have taken so many paracetamol over the last month!

I was exactly the same. I took the pregnacare Max and suffered such bad headaches. Now I’ve stopped them and take seven seas I am no longer suffering. I actually went to the out of hours doctor about it as it was so bad and had lasted over a week!’
Nimsay1 · 04/12/2020 05:42

I was getting really bad headaches every day from the minute I woke up. I spoke to the midwife and she said it was a sign my body needed more rest. A few weeks later my sleep improved and the headaches disappeared. Try and get a nap in the day and see if that helps. Something with some sugary carbs shortly after you wake up might help a little too. I hope they don't last too much longer for you.

Queenbee95 · 04/12/2020 07:15

@GreyishDays yeah I’m waking up with one every morning.

I called docs and they’ve told me to get my eyes tested, shock! My gp surgery have always said the same to me when I’ve complained of headaches. Every time I visit the optician he tells me my eyesight is perfect.
Told me to take codeine as well as paracetamol.. we’ll see if it helps
