Newborn clothes to buy or not?

I feel like I have so many questions to post on here recently.. the joys of being a first time parent!

Right me and my partner are both really tall, I'm almost 6ft myself and he's around 6ft 4 so it's likely that we're going to have a baby slightly bigger than average.

My Mom had said not to buy newborn clothes as the baby probably won't fit in them at all or only for a week or two at most so we've started buying everything in 0-3 months.. however I've since seen lots of posts with people saying 0-3 months were huge on their newborns and they had to go out and buy newborn anyway so now I'm torn as to whether I buy some to be prepared and it be a waste of money if they don't fit or wait until the baby is here?

Opinions please!

New baby's only wear a vest, a babygrow and possibly a cardigan. So just buy a pack of both sizes. When you're home from hospital your mum or your DH can pop out and get the right size once you know. You don't have to buy every last thing in advance. Good luck with everything! X

Twizbe · 27/11/2020 17:19

Me and DH are tallies and have 2 kids.

DS was 9lb1 and very long. He was in newborn primark for a while before he went into 0-3

DD was 9lb3 and a chunky thing. She was in 0-3 almost straight away.

I'd suggest getting a pack of both sizes in neutral colours.

People will gift you clothes and you can always get more of the size is wrong.

Neutral baby grows are great if you plan on having more than one child. You can reuse them no matter who comes next

lobsteroll · 27/11/2020 17:41

You can also get a size that is "up to one month" in some places which is slightly bigger than newborn and not as big as 0-3.

I always find H&M baby clothes absolutely enormous as well so maybe their newborn size might be good? My youngest is nearly 18 months and their 9-12 babygrows still swamp her

I found 0-3 absolutely huge (even on my eldest who was almost 9lb baby). The annoying thing is that each shop's sizing is so different 🙄

happytoday73 · 27/11/2020 17:45

My babies were all over 9lb and we went straight to 0-3months.. They don't need much anyway at beginning... Someone can pop out for supplies when arrives

MrsMarrio · 27/11/2020 17:45

You can buy 'up to 1 month' clothes at tesco. My son was very long and 9lb 7.5oz these fitted him much better than 0-3months

firsttimemomtobex · 27/11/2020 17:51

@BigusBumus thankyou! I'm due April so will need to get a few cardigans but trying not to go crazy as I know they only get a few wears out of things at that age..

@Twizbe we have bought some neutral things but it's all been in 0-3 so at least it will be reusable if they don't get much wear out of it

@lobsteroll yes I've seen Asda don't do 'newborn' but do a 'first size' but I can imagine just like clothes for us they're different sizes from everywhere so will just have to get a few and see what fits best at the time I suppose

Me and DP are both tall and my baby was 9lb and long, he went straight into the "up to 1 month" clothing but only a few shops do that size so I'd get a few packs of up to 1 month baby grows! The shops I can remember are Next, Tesco and H&M xx

Luckystar1 · 27/11/2020 17:52

My children were 8lb 11, 9lb and 9lb 9, all were long and all were in newborn clothes for at least a couple of weeks/month.

yikesanotherbooboo · 27/11/2020 17:52

My DC were average sized; different shapes , 0-3 was fine. It's true that they probably would have looked a bit sweeter and wouldn't have caught their feet up in baggy legs of the bigger clothes in new born sizes but it is very hard to justify buying double for the sale of a few weeks. I had economised with DC1 and just bought a couple of 3 packs of white babygros and vests from Tesco. She was fine so I just got them out of the loft for subsequent DC. I got given a few odds and ends as well of course but you don't know what will come!

BigusBumus · 27/11/2020 17:53

When DS1 was born he was 7lb3 and he was in Gap Preemie for a couple of weeks before going into Newborn. My sister had given me them from her premature twins and I was so grateful when nothing fitted him!

MRC20 · 27/11/2020 17:59

Oh don't worry, most supermarkets do all sizes now. If you need a different size someone can run and get it when baby gets here and you have blankets till then. you can easily online order next day delivery m Honestly don't worry. I spent a fortune on all different size baby clothes which were all mostly wrong. SIL did a 2 hour shop and got all I needed xx

RandomMess · 27/11/2020 18:01

My advice is that things tend to shrink in the wash...

My 10lb6oz baby had super long legs and had to go into her going home outfit rather than the newborn 2nd hand sleep suits in hospital. The trouser legs were way too short so they had to get some socks from SCBU 🤦🏼‍♀️

You can get sleepsuits without feet so I'd get some of those in newborn/up to one month plus socks.

The best thing ever though are baby nightgowns so much quicker to change nappies and they are super long. Found one by accident and stocked up on them for all subsequent babies!!

MRC20 · 27/11/2020 18:02

So sorry my point was buy a couple things, bigger I'd better as if it's too big you can still get it on in emergency but if it's too small you can't do anything with it. Once baby arrives send someone out to get you stuff for a few weeks till you get your shit together then go mad with credit card 😂😂

RandomMess · 27/11/2020 18:04

John Lewis look up "Baby bundler" for the nightgown I mean.

DH loved them as he really struggled with the tiny poppers.

firsttimemomtobex · 27/11/2020 18:04

@MRC20 omg please don't say that! We've been buying a few bits in different sizes and if it's all wrong I'll be gutted at the waste of money e.g. I've seen some cute Christmas things I love (only two outfits I haven't gone completely crazy) so have worked out they'll be 8 months at Christmas so bought 9-12 presuming they'll be a big baby.. might sound mad but I'm just so excited because it's my first

The up to 9ib ones are useful; we had some newborn things for Morrison’s which DS only fitted into for a week or so as they only went up to 7ib.

SpacePug · 27/11/2020 18:10

0-1 month is a safe bet, newborn may be small, was too small for my 8lb 7 DS but he wore 0-1 for 3 weeks

TicTacTwo · 27/11/2020 18:12

I'm 5 foot 8 and my ex is 6foot. My teen son is currently 6 foot 2 but when he was born he was small (7lb at 14 days overdue) and remained one of the shortest boys until he was about 14ish and had his growth spurt. My mum is 5 foot 1 and I was a 9lb baby so it doesn't necessarily follow that tall parents = long baby
I would buy both sizes and be prepared to buy more once you know how big your baby is.

MonkeyPuddle · 27/11/2020 18:14

I make big babies, DD is 3 weeks old and almost out of her 0-3m clothes length wise, I knew she wa going to be big (10lbs) so didn’t bother buying anything in newborn/first size.

Procrastatron · 27/11/2020 18:23

Go by the indicated weights not the age as different shops use different weights for their age categories.
Also, a too big sleep suit is actually a bit of an issue as babies legs get stuck in the body bit.
I had inexplicably small babies of just over six pounds both times and was grateful for my tiny baby grows that someone gave me. My similar sized friend had giant babies and had to cut the feet of the grows in hospital.
You don’t need many as you’ll get loads as gifts so buy a couple of sizes (packs) to start off for the hospital bag and then buy more when you know what you need.

CosyQueen · 27/11/2020 18:23

So I’m short at 5’4 but my husband is 6’6 - so I was expecting our DS to be bigger than average at birth. However he weighed 7.3lbs and was in newborn clothes from birth for the first month (maybe slightly longer I don’t quite remember) He is three now and is super super tall like his daddy but he wasn’t as a newborn. So I would advise maybe getting a couple of newborn clothes and then waiting until baby is here before you go mad on buying clothes as you’ll know what size will fit by then.
One word of advise though as the baby grows- if they are long, buy sleep suits that have no built in feet and just a cuffed ankle - they last a long baby so much longer and you can obviously put socks on their feet so they don’t get cold!

GAW19 · 27/11/2020 18:24

I'm 4ft 11" and DP is 6ft 6", we ended up with a 8lb 10oz baby Blush
We got 1 pack of newborn vests and sleep suits, but mostly 'Up to one month'. As the sizing was a lot better on them.
I would defo buy atleast some up to one month clothes for the first few weeks Smile

Daisy62 · 27/11/2020 18:24

Why not buy a few sizes online nearer the time and send back the ones you don’t use.

MRC20 · 27/11/2020 18:25

Honestly I completely understand, I was the same. Not everyone has the same experience but in mine I honestly didn't use what I'd bought and I spent about £200 on clothes. I could kindly kick myself. Also once baby came I honestly didn't care what they wore as long as it was (relatively clean) and fitted, great.
Also, it's your first and you definitely need to splash out, just don't go mad 👍😍

NameChange30 · 27/11/2020 18:31

Don't buy any sleepsuits from JoJo! I bought some when I was pregnant with DC1 but they were a poor fit on both my babies, weirdly proportioned as they were too short in the leg compared to everything else. And I expect you'll have a long baby, given your height.

My babies were 9lb4 and 9lb1 and they both wore newborn size (in other brands, not JoJo which was too short) for a few weeks before going up to 0-3.

I second the recommendation for baby bundlers from John Lewis (they have one with a rabbit on it which is about £8 IIRC) and also buying some vests and sleepsuits in 0-1 month size. As PPs said, check the size guides for each shop you buy from as they should list sizes by weight and length of baby.
