Newborn clothes to buy or not?

I feel like I have so many questions to post on here recently.. the joys of being a first time parent!

Right me and my partner are both really tall, I'm almost 6ft myself and he's around 6ft 4 so it's likely that we're going to have a baby slightly bigger than average.

My Mom had said not to buy newborn clothes as the baby probably won't fit in them at all or only for a week or two at most so we've started buying everything in 0-3 months.. however I've since seen lots of posts with people saying 0-3 months were huge on their newborns and they had to go out and buy newborn anyway so now I'm torn as to whether I buy some to be prepared and it be a waste of money if they don't fit or wait until the baby is here?

Opinions please!

@lobsteroll H&M come up big to accommodate a big cloth nappy.

I washed newborn and 1 month and had tiny baby still in the pack (aunt made me by it), DD was a hair under 6lbs so needed the tinies. Also because I was indisposed the paramedics grabbed a cardigan that was 0-3 that actually fit till she was somewhere around 9-12 months Grin she looked very small and silly.

I wouldn’t buy too much in advance size wise for seasons.

My baby was born in May. 8lb8. He sailed through the sizes in weeks. Now at almost 7 months he has been in 9-12 months for a few weeks. The 6-9 month ‘winter’ stuff we had been gifted he has largely outgrown, especially anthing like sleepsuits, vests or dungarees that go over top and bottom half. Cardigans etc aren’t too bad.

He’s not even that big now, he’s tall ish but not off the scale, and about 50% for weight

I bought a cheap 5 pack of newborn vests and same for onesies and left it at that. Enough to get by, but not a huge waste if they don’t fit!

Me and my DP are both tall and I was told I was having a big baby by my bump measurements. It was all water 😂 daughter was 8lb and stayed in the 8lb range for 4 weeks. I bought a years worth of clothes with cute Christmas bits for 12-18 months. She finally wore those cute Christmas clothes when she was 2! She 4 next month and she’s still wearing 2-3 years. She’s had a bit of a growth spurt (finally) and her legs have gotten long, but I definitely only buy clothes as and when they’re needed now 😂

I bought lots of 0 to 3 M clothes and only 3 vests and 3 onesies in newborn size.
FTM here too and gone a bit mad with online shopping.
Closer to the date when i know a bit more about her weight/size i might go shopping to choose a cute first onesie and hat with DH.
But i also accepted that i splashed for these first few months clothes and that if she doesn't get to wear them long, well too bad.
Will be a lesson learned for me and can always reuse for next baby if there is one of give to my brother when he has kids.
😁

Get some 'up to 1 month' vests and sleepsuits.
I'm 5'10" and DH is 6'4" and we're both broadly built so I was expecting colossal babies, but our newborns were 8lb0oz and 8lb8oz so bang on average, and both were in up to 1 month clothes for a few weeks.
My 4yo now wears size 6-7 though! Shock

Mine 7lb9 and 8lb5 never wore newborn they were too long. They were in up to 1 month for a couple of weeks.

I'd have a look on eBay or buy a pack of vest/babygrows in newborn and buy more if necessary. They don't move a whole lot so too big clothes wouldn't be a massive problem.

You'll get a better idea of size when you have your 20 week scan, not necessarily very accurate but you might know if you're looking at a tiddler or a chunk at least.
Not only are there the different sizes there's also the fact that supermarket stuff tends to come up smaller (especially in length). However this is useful too as a supermarket 0-3 might be a similar fit to M&S up to one month. When we Rick over into the next age/size I use the supermarket clothes first then as they start looking a little snug I use the non-supermarket but same labelled size.

Long story short a pack of vests and sleepsuits in first/up to one month and another in 0-3 will get you through the first couple of days and you'll know more then. We had newborn which was fine for us but needed the smaller baby stuff for about a week 🤦 although that will be being donated to the NICU once we've finished our baby days so it doesn't feel like such a waste

Thanks to everyone for your advice! I've bought some 'first size' vests from Asda which I think is their equivalent to newborn and one pack of sleepsuits in newborn and then I'm going to try and wait until little man is here before I buy anymore now as I've been getting quite a bit but after everyone's comments about not buying seasonal things incase they grow quicker/slower than expected I better stop 😂

We had mostly asda first size initially, she was 6lb 13 at birth and they were a good balance between tiny baby and newborn. She was in the vests and sleep suits at 8 weeks which she was 9lbs ish. She was in the t shirts for a few more weeks until her head grew. I have hoodie cardigan in first size that we are still using even though she is 12+lb and 16 weeks!

Sainsburys clothes tend to be long, we are still using up to 1 month long sleeved vests which have an estimated upper weight of 10lb and I said she's 12lb!

Having a mix of supermarket brands can create a more gradual transition between sizes as they have different fits. Don't worry about getting too much in advance, we started with 7 vests and 5 sleepsuits in first size and 0-3months but within a few days we picked up more of the size we needed. Click and collect and online delivery means you don't have to wait too long for extras!

firsttimemomtobex · 28/11/2020 17:23

@Superscientist that's good to know about sainsburys as I've seen some sleepsuits on their website I like but like I said I think I need to stop buying now 🙈😂
