Hi guys,
Just need some advice. I was about 9 weeks pregnant (thought I was 13!) when I went for a scan last Tuesday 17th and found out my baby had died. Didn't know when. I have not had any signs & my body still thinks I'm pregnant. The hospital advised me to try a medical abortion with mysoprostal and booked me in for Monday. I took one round. It didn't work much, so I took some more a few hours later. It started to work but not enough, so they kept me in overnight. I took more Tues & they had no affect. So they told me I needed a surgical removal, local or general. They only do that on Friday. I asked for advice and they thought local would be best as fewer risks. They have just called me to say there is nothing available until the following Friday which they don't advise. They can squeeze me in at midnight for general.
This scares me because I know the risks are much higher and I feel like they would be rushing 🙈.
Is it best to just wait it out and let my body deal with it naturally? Should I wait a further week for local and hope it comes out naturally before then? Sorry tmi. I'm just so confused right now. I started bleeding a bit, but no major clots with the pills on Monday, so hopefully my body is doing something. 😥 Xxx

I'm so sorry you've found yourself in this situation.
I had a missed miscarriage in June and opted for survival management under a local. It was quick, not a lot of pain ( and any pain was very short lived), and dealt with safely. I had a very speedy recovery afterwards and for me, absolutely the best way to deal with such an awful situation.
I found the thought of going through it under a local much worse than the actual experience.
I started a thread about my experience and lots of other women added to it....titled my mva experience graphic info....I'm sure if you search in Google it'll come up.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Xx

Candyflosscrochet · 25/11/2020 16:22

Sorry, and to add to answer question having pressed post too quickly....
If you have to wait I personally would do the op on Friday rather than risk another week, but it is a very personal decision that sadly only you can decide. There is no right or wrong.
For me, the idea of having a natural miscarriage, the possible risks with that, at home with my kids was not something I wanted to entertain.
It's shit, and I'm so sorry you're in the situation.
Sending love and hugs. Xx

Hi OP,

Sorry to hear about your MC. I've no advice but just giving a bump for you x

Crys5 · 25/11/2020 16:33

Thank you @Candyflosscrochet, I will look that up, and glad it went as well as it could for you hug. Yeah I would definitely rather it was over sooner rather than later.
Thanks for the bump @ftmf30 Smile xxx

Sorry to hear you're going through this OP Flowers

Ultimately it is what will make you feel most comfortable, but I'll share my experience Smile

I had a missed miscarriage detected at 10 weeks earlier this year and opted for medical management where I took a pill and miscarried at home. I found the experience to be excruciating and think I should have gone back to the hospital - I have a high pain threshold and after that I decided if it ever happened again I would go for surgical management as the emotional and physical pain was too much together for me.

On the other hand, I was glad to be at home through the miscarriage as I had my mum there and comfortable surroundings.

Regarding local anaesthetic - I am pregnant again, a few weeks ago at my 20 week scan found I had an issue with my cervix, which resulted in an emergency procedure a couple days later under local. The experience of local itself was fine, I felt no pain and within 3 hours I was walking about and managed to empty my bladder so went home same day. Local itself was amazing and recovery was great. However, I didn't think about how I would emotionally feel being in theatre (despite being so calm and collected through the whole few days of thinking I may miscarry). Being awake and having people around me going about the procedure just had an odd effect on me I think- which I ended up freaking out about a little bit and wishing I had asked for a general.

All the above is of course personal experience and what is best/comfortable for one person could be entirely different for another.

Sunbird24 · 25/11/2020 19:03

Can’t really advise @Crys5 as I’ve only had medical management for a missed miscarriage before, which worked for me. I wanted to let you know you’re not alone though, I found out on Weds my current pregnancy has failed so I have an appointment tomorrow to discuss the options. Whatever you decide, I hope it works out for you.

Sansa87 · 25/11/2020 19:18

I had a mmc in July. Two rounds of tablets didn’t work, so surgical management was my next option.

I couldn’t cope with the thought of being being awake, & hearing/seeing stuff (I don’t know if you even do) so I begged for a general.

Personally I’m SO pleased I went down that route. I was looked after amazingly, and went home late afternoon feeling no pain. I’m not going to say it was easy, mentally You can I’ll always know and struggle with what has to happen.

If god forbid it happened again, I wouldn’t think twice about requesting a general. I also feel there is less of a rush, & more focus if you’re asleep.

I’m now 16+5w pregnant, & like to think our first baby is watching over our current one ❤️

Crys5 · 25/11/2020 19:33

@sansa87 Oh gosh, you are the first person I've seen that has had the general anaesthetic. Yeah the fact that they don't have to rush is a great positive. Thank you. I have just been worried that everything about it carries more risk than the local. ♥️ Yes your first is definitely watching over 🥰xxx

Thank you for letting me know your experience @cervixissues. Yeah I can appreciate being physically aware whilst it is happening quite difficult to process. I think I've atomatically started panicing because I feel like I haven't got a choice (general or nothing) and hadn't seen anyone else experience general, so assumed it must be worse. But I can see now that there are positives to it. Xxx Hope you are doing ok now

@Crys5 all surgery poses a risk, they can never say anything is 100% safe.

You have to do what is right by you, but I definitely felt in safe hands, & being put to sleep was a quite nice feeling.

Make sure you talk all your worries over with a doctor though. ❤️

pixienewbie · 25/11/2020 20:00

@Crys5 I’m so sorry to hear about what you are going through.

I just thought I’d share my experience in case it helps. I recently had a MMC and the medical miscarriage failed too. I had surgery last month and requested local anaesthetic and, though the procedure went well and the nurses/doctor were all lovely, I found it really tough being awake. I told myself after that if I ever had to go through that again I would have the general.

Crys5 · 25/11/2020 20:34

Thank you @pixienewbie ♥️♥️♥️

Got to go back next Friday for another scan and if there’s no change they’ll remove everything under general anaesthetic. Turns out my ambulance ride to A&E on Sat was most likely internal bleeding as there’s a big blood clot stopping them getting a good look at my left ovary. Should break up on its own though so that’s good news!

BKB27 · 26/11/2020 15:47

Hi hope you don't mind me joining. I've jist been for my 7 week scan at the ivf clinic to be told the baby didnt grow past 5 weeks. This is now my third miscarriage and second missed miscarriage. They have advised I can go in for another scan on Tuesday 'just in case' but I'm not hopeful. The last time I had medical management but reading your comments I may opt for something else this time as I found it quite traumatic. I hope all the procedures go well x

Sunbird24 · 26/11/2020 15:51

So sorry @BKB27

Crys5 · 26/11/2020 15:52

Oh @Sunbird24 that sounds like it was pretty scary for you. Glad they've figured out what was wrong though. Hope your week goes ok.
I'm going in for surgery tonight & feel completely unprepared. 😬 I'll let you know how it goes xxx

I had a surgical under general and would recommend it. Medical was horrendous and left retained products. With the general I was back in my room within the hour and awake eating toast. If it ever happens again, I'll go straight for the surgery option with general.

Sunbird24 · 26/11/2020 16:12

Good luck tonight @Crys5 hope it’s swift and painless for you xx

BKB27 · 26/11/2020 17:07

Thanks @Crys5 and @Sunbird24. Hope tonight goes well for you and its as quick and painless as possible.

readyforroundtwo · 26/11/2020 17:29

Hi Op,
I had a MMC a few years ago and opted for surgical management under general. I'm so glad I did as I had hardly any pain and went home the same day. No issues afterwards either with retained tissue.

I understand going under anesthetic is a worry but I don't think I would of coped having to do it awake and at home. I definitely felt safe and looked after in hospital.
Wishing you all the best and I'm sorry you are going through this Flowers

Sunbird24 · 27/11/2020 08:54

How did it go @Crys5, hope you’re ok?

I’ve started bleeding this morning so called the hospital to cancel my procedure. Bit gutted, would rather have it all over with while I’m asleep, but I guess it’s a good thing that my body has worked out what it needed to do on its own.

Crys5 · 27/11/2020 09:29

So the hospital made a mistake. Just before I was about to leave (luckily) they called to say they needed to book me in for bloods before my op on Monday?! Sorry, what? I mean I know they squeezed me in Friday night, but I was booked in. Ugh. So it's been moved to Monday morning. Fingers crossed it actually happens this time. 😬 Thanks for all your messages support everyone xxx

@Sunbird24 yeah, annoyingly it's a good thing your body is on the road to recovery ♥️ hope it's not too painful xxx
