Hi guys,
Just need some advice. I was about 9 weeks pregnant (thought I was 13!) when I went for a scan last Tuesday 17th and found out my baby had died. Didn't know when. I have not had any signs & my body still thinks I'm pregnant. The hospital advised me to try a medical abortion with mysoprostal and booked me in for Monday. I took one round. It didn't work much, so I took some more a few hours later. It started to work but not enough, so they kept me in overnight. I took more Tues & they had no affect. So they told me I needed a surgical removal, local or general. They only do that on Friday. I asked for advice and they thought local would be best as fewer risks. They have just called me to say there is nothing available until the following Friday which they don't advise. They can squeeze me in at midnight for general.
This scares me because I know the risks are much higher and I feel like they would be rushing 🙈.
Is it best to just wait it out and let my body deal with it naturally? Should I wait a further week for local and hope it comes out naturally before then? Sorry tmi. I'm just so confused right now. I started bleeding a bit, but no major clots with the pills on Monday, so hopefully my body is doing something. 😥 Xxx

Hi @Crys5 and everyone else. I'm having surgical under general anaesthetic on monday after my 12 week scan showed the baby had died at 10+5 (at the pre op appt now!). For me, I think it will be best to have surgery as I couldn't stand the unpredictable timelines of natural or medical (also nothing has happened in the 2 weeks since the baby passed away so I dont feel natural is gonna happen).

Sorry to hear about your mmc. I'm currently sat in hospital waiting for surgical management under general. I've had a mmc before and opted for tablets at home but it didn't work so had surgical under general anyway. So this time I decided to go straight for it. Our hospital has never offered local so I wasn't aware you could do it that way but I think I'd prefer general anyway. You don't know what's happening and fall seep one minute and the next it's all over. Horrible experience all around its never nice being in hospital. I just want to get it all over and done with so I can go home and cry and heal.

Crys5 · 27/11/2020 09:46

@TheDaydreamBelievers so sorry & yes if you are anything like me, you are making the right decision!

Hope you don't mind me asking. I don't think I had a pre op appointment and it seems they failed to mention that I shouldn't eat before (I don't have much confidence in this hospital!!) Is there anything important that I should / shouldn't do / know?!!

Hi Op. I'm so sorry - I've been there. You go for an appointment and have no idea something is wrong. My DH wasn't with me when I found out that the babies had died (twins) as I wasn't even expecting a scan that day.I didn't quite understand as I hadn't even heard of missed miscarriage.

Not to scare you but for some reason I fell through the cracks and wasn't offered any medical management. I was left to go through it naturally and given no warning of what to expect and was too caught up in everything to ask questions. As they didn't mention anything I also didn't think it would be a big deal.

I started bleeding very heavily at what would've been 14 weeks. I had to sit in the bath and loo as I kept soaking through 3 maternity pads on top of each other and clothes. That started at 2pm and was constant. I know miscarriages are common and thought it was normal and didn't want to create a fuss and go to hospital.

I woke at 1am and collapsed due to blood loss also hitting my head. Ambulance came and I was in hospital for a week needing multiple blood transfusions.

I hope you're okay

TheDaydreamBelievers · 27/11/2020 11:07

@Crys5 I'm sorry your hospital is being a bit rubbish!

They checked height, weight, BP, took bloods, and asked a bunch of medical history Qs (have you ever had x, y, z).

They told me for a morning slot no eating at all on that day, no drinking except plain water BEFORE 6am then must stop. If afternoon (like me) can have a light breakfast, only water to drink, must stop drinking by 11am. Said to wear comfy clothes, bring a book, phone, sanitary towels. My hospital provides a dressing gown and slippers but if yours doesnt then bring those.

After op they will want to see me be non drowsy, eat toast, drink something, and pee before I go home. Not allowed to drive for 24hrs.

Hope that helps!

I had two surgeries to remove my failed pregnancies and had no problems whatsoever. Wishing you a speedy recovery OP xx

When I had my surgical treatment for mmc - I didn't have a preop and it was arranged very last minute - ie they found a space for the day after. I needed to call the administration office who do the bookings as they forgot to tell me when to be nil by mouth.

I was scheduled for 6pm and had a general anaesthetic and was released to go home at 10pm that night.

Recovery was fine - no pain and just felt a bit out of it the following day.

Crys5 · 28/11/2020 09:05

,@whatever1980 so sorry you had to go through that, it sounds awful! Yeah its so hard to be in the right frame of mind to question things if you don't know what is supposed to happen / on offer.

@TheDaydreamBelievers THANK YOU!! I know it's all basic things, but it has stopped me panicing that something major has been missed.

@justanotherneighinparadise, @welshladywhois40 thank you both. I felt like I was the only one going through this X X X

Does anyone know what we are meant to do if we start bleeding before the op? I really dont want this to have to go through naturally. I'm hoping they can still do it tomorrow

Sunbird24 · 29/11/2020 12:25

Give them a call and ask @TheDaydreamBelievers - I had a whole week so just cancelled mine and am going through it now

TheDaydreamBelievers · 29/11/2020 12:32

@Sunbird24 - unfortunately both the EPU/EPAS and the day surgery unit are closed on sundays in my healthboard.

I have been able to speak to an acquaintance who is a professional in the field who said unless I am bleeding heavily by tomorrow they should still proceed with surgery.

Sunbird24 · 29/11/2020 12:54

Fingers crossed for you! I’ve been off work since my ride in an ambulance last weekend so I forgot what day it was, sorry 🤦‍♀️

TheDaydreamBelievers · 29/11/2020 15:54

No worries @Sunbird24. Fingers crossed, it seems to have stopped! Hoping you are recovering well

Crys5 · 30/11/2020 12:17

@TheDaydreamBelievers hope when you see this you'll be out and recovering!
I just had surgery. So confusing. They can in to say general wasn't available because my case wasn't important enough. Ok, fine, I asked for local originally,! But local wasn't available either & they'd already given me more misoprostol, so I got a spinal injection. I was asked so many times by different members of staff why I had chosen this!! I didn't!! Argh. How to make me feel less stressed! Anyway, long story short, it was a success & I am now eating toast. Very bizarre not bring able to feel my legs, but hoping this will fade soon and I'll be able to go home today. Hope everyone else it ok xxx

TheDaydreamBelievers · 30/11/2020 21:00

@Crys5 unfortunately I had to wait from midday until 530pm for the surgery but it went well. Was done and awake by 6pm and feeling okay now.

Definitely feel like surgery was right for me - feeling fine and it was very easy procedure wise. The hardest bit was the boredom waiting in the day surgery clinic!

Hope you recover well x

Sunbird24 · 03/12/2020 11:16

How is everyone doing now? I’m very sad I’m having to do it the long way (nurse said to call them if I’m still bleeding in 3 weeks! 😖) instead of someone speeding it up for me, but the end result is all the same x

TheDaydreamBelievers · 03/12/2020 12:00

@Sunbird24 I'm sorry you are having to go about it this way too. How are you feeling and doing physically?

Physical recovery has been good - I've had some extremely mild cramping only. Bleeding has almost stopped and I'm only 3 days after the procedure. Not sure when first to test.

Crys5 · 03/12/2020 22:30

@Sunbird24 So sorry it's all taking so long for you. Yeah I am doing ok now physically. Just feeling drained & a bit of light bleeding.
Thinking of you xx

Glad you’ve both had good results from your procedures, hopefully that means your cycles get back to normal quicker too. Take care of yourselves x
