HI IM BEING INDUCED AND DONT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR THINGS TO START UP? AND HOW LONG WAS IT TIL YOU HAD BABY IN YOUR ARMS?

Hi there
I was induced at 35 weeks due to pre aclampsia.
My cervic was already "soft". They gave me prosten (i think) gel to start things. It took about 1 - 2 hours for the pain to really kick off. The pain came hard and fast due to the induction. Not gradually so you can get use to them.
I had an epidural at 2cm
I can't handle pain.
From when they induced me till I had DD in arms was about 12 hours.

Good luck to you. How far are you?

janestillhere · 18/10/2007 10:49

Hello, I was induced with both dc's due to high blood pressure, both nearly term.
Both experiences were differet, one labour 10.5 hours with epidural. They let that wear off abit at the end so I could push efficiently. With dd now aged 11 months labour was 1.5 hrs going from mild niggling pain to full on 'oh my god the head is coming down!!!'!
The second was scary with no time for pain relief however baby was in my arms much sooner and overall a better experience.
Love and best wishes - I am so excited for you! xxx

I've had two inductions. They normally start with gel then may break your waters or use more gel and then maybe use sytocine IV drip. I had epidural with first labour it was long unfortunately 17 hours. It really depends how ready your body is to give birth i think, second labour was 2 hours. had no time for epidural but wished i had one.

I hope it's not too long for you, but your little bubba will be worth all the wait.

oooggs · 18/10/2007 11:35

from pessary in to babies out was 12 hours

induction at 38 weeks for twins, pessary in at 9am, checked at 4.30pm, waters went at 4.40pm, dt1 born at 8.50pm & dt2 at 9.19pm.

Had and epidural at 5pm and didn't feel a thing, didn't even know dt1 was out!!!!!!

slalomsuki · 18/10/2007 11:40

Induction with my third, pessary to baby nearly 24 hours but it didn't work and they couldn't break my waters to give me a kick start or the drip. I was 3cm when they started and the joke was I would be in and out within a few hours.

unnily enough this was my longest labour with the other two being 4 1/2 hours and 6 mins respectively so you can never tell what will happen

GOOD LUCK and keep the thought that it is only for a limited period of time.

pelvicflawed · 18/10/2007 12:00

Went in sat pm - and had pessary, had mild contractions for 24 hrs (waters broke Sat night) but nothing really happened - put on drip Sun evening and DS arrived 10 am Monday morning. I was induced because I was two weeks overdue. I had an epidural when 5cm dilated as it was taking for ever and after being awake for nearly 24 hrs I was getting really tired - everyone warned me the pain with induction was bad but to be honest I thought it was managable up until 5cm dilation with gas and air + cans of full sugar cola!!!! (turns out that though things had been taking ages once I got to 5 cm things were going to spped up rapidly!). The bit I hated was the 24 hrs with nothing much happening. Good luck

Sunshinecursedmummy · 18/10/2007 12:02

My experience wasn't great but am happy to share if you want.

Santasmissyontheside · 18/10/2007 12:08

I was induced 5 weeks ago! went in at 8am had first check and gel not much happened. 6 hours later 2nd gel and contractions started. Sat on my birthing ball bouncing away. Had gas and air which i loved this time. I was taken to del suite and dd2 was born! Actual labour was 2 hours 45 mins. I was induced week early due to spd so bad. I was actually posting here during day. Thread was called my international birthing partners. Kept me occupied!

Santasmissyontheside · 18/10/2007 12:16

Forgot to add that cervix was already soft and 1 to 2 am dialated as it was my second and i'd been having contractions and membrane sweep day before.

Flounder78 · 18/10/2007 12:20

From Pressery to baby was 4 days. Had Pressery on thursday Morning DS was born Sunday night at 11.30.

I wont go into details but it didn't all go to plan but happy to share if you wish.

Lulumama · 18/10/2007 12:24

why are you being induced? have you had your bishops score done? the riper your cervix, the higher your score, the more likely it is that your induction will be succesful and not too long, is this your first?

my tips would be be as mobile as you can, once you have had a pessary, and been monitored, then get up out of bed, and move! walk and rock, and sit on a birth ball if you have one... being immobile is not the best way to get things going

try and keep active and upright as you can, even with monitoring you should be able to at least stand by teh bed or sit on a birth ball

induciton can be more intense than spontaneous labour as you don;t have the natural build up, but it can be coped with!

sagitta · 18/10/2007 12:35

I was induced - went in on christmas day, had pessary, mild contractions, another pessary, mild contractions. Went to McDonalds , mild contractions etc etc. DD arrived on morning of 28th, about five minutes away from emergency C-section.

sagitta · 18/10/2007 12:36

Good luck! I'm sure it will be fine.
And at least I had time for an epidural

ILovePudding · 18/10/2007 12:38

I was 2 weeks overdue. Was admitted in the evening and had pessary in overnight. Cervix was ripe and 2 cm dilated. Had waters broken.

Didn't want to have i/v, so mw let me have a few hours to walk round to try and get labour started. 12pm, no labour, so started i/v.

Labour began very soon after. It wasn't as fast and abrupt as had been led to believe. Had a bit of gas and air but it made me feel sick, other than that no pain relief. DD was born just over 11 hours later.

Having the i/v was a bit of a hindrance. Even though I was still able to move around, I couldn't use the bath or shower, and it was a bit restrictive as was always aware of tubes etc. Plus canula was insterted close to wrist and I kept leaning on it which was uncomfortable.

emotionalwreck · 18/10/2007 13:45

I agree with lulumama - its impossible to know how things will go unless you've had an internal. I had gestational diabetes with DD1 and they wouldn't let me go over my due date.

Despite my cervix being long and 1cm dilated, and dd's head was not engaged, they attempted to induce me. 3 prostin pessaries, and 3 days later I had had a show but no contractions and ended up having a c section. The 3 day wait was worse than the c section!

Good luck!

QueenofBleach · 18/10/2007 13:53

Induced but not successful, they made decision to do c section rather than keep inducing andthen ending up with emergency, alhough babe was fine they were worried about her heart beat and decided that was the best option, be prepared for anything.

CarGirl · 18/10/2007 14:10

I've had 4 inductions, they were all very different!!! I was overdue and each time my bishops score was 1

1st baby about 10 days over, 3 lots of gel and ARM, about 36 hours of pain!

2nd baby 16 days over, 1 lot of gel asked for an epidural within 2 hours about 10 hours of pain!

3rd baby, at term, 3 lots of gel and ARM about 30 hours of pain!

4th baby, 14 days over, 2 lots of gel (my bishops score was still only 1 6 hours after the 1st lot of gel and I'd been in pain and using my tens machine the whole time!), 11 hours of pain - but absolutely wonderful birth no epidural and would do it again tomorrow.

flamingtoaster · 18/10/2007 14:23

I was induced for first baby - Pessary 9.00 am, strong contractions by 4.30 pm, dilated 5 cm by 7.00, emergency c-section at 9.25 pm as DS in distress.

Katisha · 18/10/2007 14:34

Induced both times. All over in about 5 hours. It was quite intense quite quickly, tens machine no use whatsoever. Had an epidural first time, and needed a ventouse delivery in the end. Second time epidural didn't work properly so maybe was more able to push - don't know really. Anyway - two healthy children!

aquababe · 18/10/2007 14:36

started 2hrs after gel
Baby in arms after 13/4 hours of crap followed by emerg c section.

don't let them make you lie on your back for any length of time. listen to lulumama re being mobile.

JaamityvilleHorror · 18/10/2007 14:45

Went in for induction with DD2 but cervix already dilating so didn't need pessary. They just broke my water and contractions came very fast after that. DD2 born within 4 hours after that. More intense pain thatn with DD1 who was not induced but seemed more managable becasue the labour was so much shorter.

Don't know if this is normal but there was an awful lot of poking and vigorous prodding when they broke my water. Don't know what I was expecting but I found that bit quite distressing and I don't usually mind vaginal exams, sweeps, smears, etc. Just be warned!

Good luck - this time tomorrow you could be holding your new bundle

sophierosie · 18/10/2007 14:46

I was 10 days over when induced with DD. Contractions started about 4 hours after gel. Labour progressed pretty quickly until I got to about 8 cms - and stayed that way til I had an emergency C-section about 10 hours later!

snooks · 18/10/2007 14:58

1st baby induced at 39 weeks. Inserted pessary at 9pm (still no idea why they did it at this time, they apparently thought it wouldn't work and I'd get a good night's sleep....yeah, right!) Contractions every 5 mins by 11pm, epidural at 7am (and not a moment too soon!), ds1 born at 12 lunchtime, so I suppose 12-14 hours labour. The worst thing was being awake all night, so completely knackered. Second Lulumama - keep mobile, please insist on it as much as you can, I spent most of the time lying down and am sure it drew the whole process out. With ds2 I refused to lay on my back apart from being checked and it was so much quicker, less painful too.
The trouble with asking for experiences is that you could ask a million different mums and get a million different experiences - you can never guess how your labour will be.
But I am so excited for you - it sounds like you will be holding your baby in your arms by or at least over this weekend - wow, that is something to look forward to! Best of luck.

daisynova · 19/10/2007 00:08

These are interesting stories but have scared me silly as I will be getting induced at 38 weeks as I have diabetes. I'm quite tearful now and just don't want to do it.

madamez · 19/10/2007 00:17

I was induced due to hypertension at 41 weeks. First dose caused a few weak contractions for a few hours, only 1 cm dilated after 6 hours so given a second dose and everything got moving, DS born 4 hours later.

To bear in mind: being induced can make BF harder to achieve so if this is what you plan todo,b prepared and ask for lots of extra help.
