nice jumpers/tops to cover my bump??

I had to accept defeat yesterday and put my jeans and cargo pants to the back of the wardrobe and bring out the maternity gear (i'm 22 weeks pregnant with no. 2).

I'm not a big fan of really baggy maternity tops so I'd rather buy normal jumpers/tops just in a slightly bigger size and let them snuggle over the hideous 'sack' that my old maternity jeans etc all have. All the tops in my current wardrobe are too short and dont cover enough of the sack and as it's a different material to the rest of the jeans/trousers it looks really silly.

So, have anyone found any nice trendy jumpers/tops that are long enough to cover the bump but without costing a fortune as they'll get stretched so much they will need binning after the birth?

How about the new Topshop maternity range? Or Vertbaudet have some nice long jumpers at the moment. Can't go wrong with H&M either. Not sure about getting hold of long non-maternity stuff though. good luck!

Twinkie · 21/10/2004 16:01

Go to H&M and invest in 50 quid worth of maternity tops from there - none of mine are baggy and all quite trendy and I don't think any of them cost more than 10 quid each!!

You could have all of mine but my BF has just announced she is pregnant and mentioned that it was terribly conveinient as I won't be needing my maternity wardrobe in a few weeks!!

Formes.com have some lovely maternity wear and hey do mail order.

Twinkie · 21/10/2004 16:03

But they are soooo expensive!!!

Pidge · 21/10/2004 16:03

Blimey mckenzie - I had to give up on my jeans weeks ago (I'm at 21 weeks - baby no 2).

I just did a clothes shop last week and picked up a couple of maternity tops in Hennes. I'm finding they are actually very long, and stick out from under my normal jumpers, which is a bit of a pain. But they're definitely not baggy at all - cling to the bump in fact.

I found last time with just buying a bigger size of normal tops that then they really were baggy - too big around the shoulders and bust etc. Whereas maternity tops fitted properly but just allowed some extra cloth for the bump. Mind you it was summer last time, so I got away with just buying a couple of t-shirts!

acer · 21/10/2004 16:04

Yes Some are, but for that special occassion?

muddaofsuburbia · 21/10/2004 16:04

My best H&M find was a green maternity top for £2!!!

mckenzie · 21/10/2004 16:46

I can see a trip to Oxford Street coming on girls!!! Our local topshop doesnt do the maternity range and I dont think we have a Hennes or H&M anywhere near here.
I had some Formes bits for my first pregnancy Acer but that was when i was earning money and could afford the finer things in life

I ordered a strapless top and wrap top and skirt from isabellaoliver.com. They may be a little bit more but they are definitely worth the bit extra. The tops really flatter your bump and I'm still wearing their stuff despite being due in a couple of weeks. You can dress them up for a night out or wear them with jeans.

TracyK · 21/10/2004 17:31

I got some nice wrap effect tops from Long Tall Sally last year - and they were much longer than normal plus they showed a bit of cleavage which was a bonus!
or I got some stretchy long sleeved t shirts from Gap and wore a thin gilet thingy over the top most of last winter, with nice scarves. Bump was well hidden.

orangina · 21/10/2004 18:17

H&M have scored top marks for me so far, all their stretchy tops (dirt cheap) fit snugly on bump and are long enough to cover ugly maternity jeans pouch business. Went to top shop last week, but felt they were aimed at the young end of the mum-to-be market (britney bum cleavage jeans with maternity panel above?!), but maybe that's good for you?! Seraphine had some v. nice things, more pricey. Can't find the jumpers I'm after though.... but as long as I have a long t-shirt on underneath, I don't mind layering a shorter jumper on top...

hana · 21/10/2004 18:34

Gap have a great sale right now on longish long sleeved tops for 4.99 All sorts of colours. They cover the mat. pouch things and looked 'fitted' rather than tent like! I've bought several!

mckenzie · 21/10/2004 19:00

thanks everyone. Hana, is that gap maternity or just gap normal range?

discomonkfish - that isabella Oliver range all looks fab!!! My DH might regret my ever finding out about it! IS it better suited to the taller lady do you think as all the models look about 6 foot and i'm only 5ft2!!

regular stores, no gap mat in the UK
also men's boxers are down to £1.99 each

Angeliz · 21/10/2004 19:52

haven't read all thread so sorry if i'm repeating!
Dorothy Perkins do lovely maternity tops, NOT sacks honest and you buy your size too and they fit lovely
(Also Top Shop)

leglebegle · 21/10/2004 19:53

Formes are expensive but I bought a beautiful cardigan (chunky knit) and a double layer long sleeved top and I am still wearing them even though I don't need to !!! Also Isabella Oliver has some stuff you can wear afterwards too. I'd rather spend more money on stuff I can keep on wearing than cheaper stuff which I end up throwing away.

I have just bought some great tops from a shop on ebay. They are new and are from the States and are sooo cheap (about £5-7 each) so even with postage they don't work out to much and I received them within a week of purchase - http;//stores.ebay.com/Glamouraccesories_W0QQsspagenameZI2QQtZkm. If the link doesn't work, search in ebay shops for Glamouraccesories.

JiminyCricket · 21/10/2004 21:36

I saw a woman with a bump wearing black trousers with a white shirt and then a shorter v neck black jumper over it and she looked great - the colour contrast worked really well

bonym · 21/10/2004 21:49

Oh, I am rubbish - let me try that link again (will follow instructions this time..) Glamouraccessories

bonym · 21/10/2004 21:50

Yes - it worked!

Londonmummy05 · 22/10/2004 00:18

how much postage did they charge you bonym, very cool site, thanks. How do the sizes come up, I'm usually a small in maternity tops in the uk. thanks for sharing!

Hazellnut · 22/10/2004 10:55

Have a look at this site too - I have just ordered a dress for a wedding from here as couldn't find anything in the usual places. Its got quite a few different things although the downside is the delivery charge as its supposed to come in 1-2 days from France. Haven't received the order yet to tell you what its like but thought the site had lots of different things

hazellnut, would you give us an update please once your parcel has arrived. Some of the bits do look very nice but i'd like to know what you think of the quality.
Thanks.
