Are you getting the flu jab?

Hi ladies,

Just trying to decide whether or not to opt for the flu jab. I will get the whooping cough but i’ve heard mixed opinions about the flu jab and nervous to get it whilst pregnant.

Opinions welcomed!

Am I the only one desperate to know her reasoning?
No, I'm really curious to know what reason she could have given that was so bad it couldn't be repeated!

Poppyismyfavourite · 19/10/2020 22:27

yup - had it. Also made DH have it as I need him to be able look after me :)
Babies can die in the womb if the mother gets a fever.
Why were the pharmacists against it?

LL308 · 19/10/2020 22:35

Their reasoning was that they would be hesitant this year as they wouldn’t trust that there wouldn’t be some sort of covid testing drug thrown in! Their words not mine, and as you can imagine, hearing that come from an NHS nurse’ mouth, it was rather off putting. Thank you for your opinions though, I will get an appt asap.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, at all, but something similar did cross my mind when I got such an adverse reaction this year when previous years had been absolutely fine. Probably just being paranoid though.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 19/10/2020 22:49

@LL308 an nhs clinician genuinely thinks the nhs are using forced human experimentation to test covid19 drugs?! Shock that's... quite far out there

Turtleturtle81 · 19/10/2020 22:51

NHS nurses really shouldn’t be spreading Covid conspiracy theories. She is putting pregnant women and their babies at risk. I would have absolutely no qualms reporting her if she said that to me.

davinns · 19/10/2020 22:56

Had it every time. Had it this year too as I'm breastfeeding so baby will get some antibodies whilst they're too young to get the flu spray themselves. Had no adverse reaction bar a slightly sore arm.

Bumble84 · 19/10/2020 22:57

A covid testing drug?? As in a test covid vaccine? Wow. I don’t know if you mean the nurse said this or your husbands family. If it was the nurse she/he should be reported. I wouldn’t hesitate. They may have been trying to make an ill advised joke but should know better than to do so

omg35 · 19/10/2020 23:02

I'm from a family of pharmacists and call bullshit on that!

ScarMatty · 19/10/2020 23:45

Nope: wasn't recommend by any doctor I met as wasn't giving birth in winter

Gerdticker · 20/10/2020 00:57

Yep, me my my 3yo DH had ours together Smile

No pain or side effects whatsoever, just immense gratitude at our wonderful health care system!

Honestly I think that nurse that speculated some COVID conspiracy nonsense should be reported - if she puts women off having the flu vaccine, she is potentially putting theirs and their baby’s health at risk.

I read that as your DH is 3 years old 🤣
HeyDW96 · 20/10/2020 02:14

I'm a pregnant nurse and I took mine, as I do every year. If you don't particularly care too much about yourself catching flu, please think about every other person (elderly, young, immune compromised) who may come into contact with you or your germs and contract it and potentially die.

3ducks · 20/10/2020 03:40

There was a study published in the BMJ late Feb early March 2020 which suggested that flu vaccination affects the immune system in a way that makes it more vulnerable to coronaviruses. Not seen any follow up to that, nor anything in a reputable medical publication (e.g. BMJ or Lancet) to discredit it. I asked the NHS practitioner who advised me to get the flu jab for their thoughts on this BMJ piece in the context of Covid 19 pandemic. The practitioner was not aware of the piece.

3ducks · 20/10/2020 03:52

I chose to get flu jab btw

minipilling · 20/10/2020 04:34

Hello, I'm joining the thread as I'm planning to TTC next month. I asked my GP if I should get the flu jab before trying and she said it's up to me, I should research and decide! Which was not helpful. I figured it would be better for me to get it done before TTC so it's sorted but she seemed ambivalent and just told me i wouldn't be eligible until actually pregnant (which I knew, but I would pay for it myself).

So since the doctor was useless - should I get it now or wait for if/when I conceive?

UsedUpUsername · 20/10/2020 05:20

Get the flu shot but do continue to be careful with hygiene as this year may or may not be a good match (we’ll only know when there are massive hospitalisations of flu victims).

I always think too many people don’t understand the limitations of the flu shot and merrily spread it around because they think they are protected 😷

ohnothisagain · 20/10/2020 05:47

@LL308 please report that nurse! God knows what other stuff she is saying, she could kill somebody with that. her private opinions are her choice, but voicing them in a professional environment is incredibly bad.

minipilling · 20/10/2020 05:54

Oh yep, definitely distancing as much as possible/masking/washing regardless of any jabs!

WildBluebell · 25/10/2020 18:34

I got mine a few days ago. No side-effects, not even a sore arm.
This is the first time I got a flu vaccine, and I don't remember the last time I got flu, probably 10+ years ago. But this year I'm pregnant, so don't want to risk it.

TrufflyPig · 25/10/2020 18:37

This pharmacist says 100% get it! Report any pharmacist who tells you otherwise.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 26/10/2020 22:47

Asthmatic and pregnant, it was a no-brainer for me to get it this year. My husband got one too to help protect me and the baby. My arm was pretty sore for a couple of days but it's better than potentially getting the flu!

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 26/10/2020 22:52

Also, massive side-eye for the nurse spreading fear and conspiracy theories about covid! She should stop spending so much time on the weird parts of Facebook...

I know a guy taking part in some of the actual covid vaccine trials. He's being monitored really regularly to check his health and antibodies to see if it's working. It's obviously completely separate and there's no way the scientists would "sneak it in" to the regular flu vaccine. Why on earth would they want to?? There's plenty of volunteers like my friend stepping up to help out.

TTC is irrelevant, it could take you years (although I hope it doesn't). I get the flu jab every year, just get it.
fuckfuckingcovid19 · 27/10/2020 05:28

If a medical professional said that to you then they need reported, they're obviously delusional. Of course the nhs aren't testing covid drugs on pregnant women without their consent. I mean ffs the reason we're 'allowed' so few drugs in pregnancy isn't because they're proven to be harmful but because it's unethical to test things on pregnant women to prove they're safe.
My husband and I had our vaccinations at the start of October, my 4yo is due his this week. Ds had flu when he was 1 and it was truly awful, I dread to think of flu in a newborn or as a pregnant woman.
