150mg aspirin over 40?

Has anyone else been prescribed this. I’ve just received a voicemail from my MW saying I’ve to take it as I’m over 40. 150mg seems a lot. Anyone know why she’s suggesting it?

I took aspirin I think to avoid clots miscarriage
Ring and ask to be sure

bloomety · 16/10/2020 17:25

I just rang her. She said it’s to prevent pre-eclampsia and stillbirth which I’m more at risk of at my age.

I understand it’s to avoid clots too.
I’m 40 and was told to take 75mg (not 150mg) following my 12 week scan. I’m not sure why different midwives are stating different dosages?

PowPurry · 16/10/2020 17:41

I can only speak for the reason I have been prescribed aspirin -

I have been given it for an episode of pre-eclampsia in one of my pregnancies. I also have a high BMI (34).
With DC3 three years ago it was 75mg. I am pregnant with DC4 and have now been given 150mg. When I asked they said the guidelines have now changed, and it was still a very low dose. The dose indicated for pain relief is >600mg just for comparison.

SazCat · 16/10/2020 17:41

I'm 39 and high BMI and have just been prescribed 150mg a day at my 12 wk scan. I'll also have to inject daily from 28 wks to prevent clots.

I was advised that the dose used to be 75mg but has recently changed, not sure if that's for all at risk ladies?

Somethingsnappy · 16/10/2020 17:52

I declined the aspirin personally (informed choice!). But yes, the risk of certain conditions raises slightly with age, so it's prescribed as a matter of course.

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/10/2020 17:54

NHS guidelines changed when I was pregnant and the dose for baby aspirin now starts at 75mg for over 40 or obese people. 150mg is still a very small dose so don’t worry.

littlemissalwaystired · 16/10/2020 18:00

In my trust, 75mg is for people with a BMI of 29 or under, and 150mg for 30+. It's a safe dose, don't worry.

BurningBenches · 16/10/2020 18:02

Interesting. I'm 41 and expecting DC5. I called the GP for something unrelated and she said (as in my 4th pregnancy ) that I'd need to inject blood thinners from 28wks due to BMI/age/parity. But that I didn't need aspirin, I didn't ask she volunteered the info. Might call the MW.

MaryShelley1818 · 16/10/2020 19:04

I'm 42 and take the 150mg aspirin daily and will be on Clexane injections from 28wks.
I'm happy to take the aspirin rather than an increased risk of preeclampsia and stillbirth.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 16/10/2020 19:16

I'm 44 have been on 75mg of aspirin since 12 weeks and clexane injections (20mg) since 15 weeks. The bmi/weight based dosage makes sense. I'm short and low bmi.

bloomety · 16/10/2020 20:11

@MaryShelley1818 and @onlyreadingneverposting8 when have you to have clexane injections?

I’ll start taking it Monday when I get prescription.

@BurningBenches yes it’s definitely worth ringing MW

@bloomety I have them from my first consultants appointment- this is the 4th pregnancy I've had clexane in. I do my injections in the fleshy bits at the top of my thighs (lots do them in their stomach but I don't have enough flesh to do that). I have clexane to prevent DVT for which I'm high risk (touch wood never had one!!!) My top tips are numb the area you're going to inject with a little ice pack first and NEVER rub afterwards as that makes it sting more!

bloomety · 16/10/2020 21:01

Sorry I meant why do you have to have them.

I've been told to take 150mg from 12 weeks due to my diabetes, was told it increases blood flow through placenta to ensure baby grows appropriately. I'm gonna discuss further with my midwife before i start taking it.

SazCat · 16/10/2020 22:07

I've got to have Clexane daily injections from 28 weeks, due to age 39 and high BMI 40+.

I did them for a couple of weeks after my last c section, but not really looking forward to doing it for months! Obviously will tho if it reduces risk of clots /pre-eclampsia.

Mimiwish · 17/10/2020 15:06

I'm on 150mg of aspirin per day, which I was VERY reluctant to take. I just turned 40, with a BMI of around 21, so definitely not high BMI, plus I have low blood pressure, not high. The only risk factors for me are my age and the fact it's a first pregnancy, which I didn't think was enough to warrant 150mg.

However, my doctor then scared me with how awful preeclampsia can be: it really can be the point of no return, when the only option is for the baby to come out. And it can be dangerous. So after that, I stopped halving my dose (which I had been doing) and just went ahead and trusted her.

At my last appointment with her, I learnt that the consultant that had advised her to tell me to take 150mg is actually one of London's best. So I am trusting that he really knows what he's doing. Every time I take the dose I worry a little bit, but my doctor is emphatic it's nothing to worry about, when the same can't be said for preeclampsia.

Please report back what you hear, though - as I'm interested to know there seems to be different doses prescribed based on different docs.

@bloomety@Mimiwish hey everyone, sorry I know it's an old post but was looking for research on aspirin. How is everyone. Was just hoping to get some feedback from those ladies that took 150mg aspirin at the start of their pregnancy. Was the pregnancy successful? Thank you in advance ❤

Mimiwish · 25/03/2021 18:21

@Lizbb - I took 150mg of aspirin from around 12 weeks to 32 ish weeks and yes, had a very healthy pregnancy, and delivered a healthy baby at term! However, it was only my age that put me at risk of preeclampsia. Also, I had a c-section and was told I didn't lose much blood at all - I had been worried aspirin might thin my blood. As far as I'm concerned, the aspirin was a good choice and posed no risk to my baby - as far as I am aware. Good luck if you are in the same situation. xx

Lizbb · 25/03/2021 18:50

@Mimiwish hey hun thanks so much for responding and congrats. I'm 4wk and 5 days but due to what I've read started taking 150mg. I'm over and bmi is over 30. I have blood test with midwife tomorrow to check things out. I'm also anemic and need to check my iron etc. Again thanks so much for responding 🙏🙏

Mimiwish · 25/03/2021 19:04

@Lizbb - good luck with your pregnancy. I was anaemic too - taking iron supplements was a must for me. Hope all goes well for you xx

abeanbaked · 26/03/2021 07:23

I'm 24, first pregnancy and have taken 150mg aspirin from 12 weeks due to history of pre-eclampsia in my family. I know of a woman who lost her baby and almost her own life too because of undiagnosed pre-eclampsia and for me, it's a no brainer. I know people refer to aspirin as a 'blood thinner' but it's an anti platelet, it doesn't actively anticoagulate you like warfarin would. I used to take 600-900mg for migraine and people going for open heart surgery take aspirin right up to the morning of that operation so I feel the risks are pretty low. You may want some omeprazole with it though, the burn is real.

Just realised this is an old thread!

I just realised this is an old thread too. Probably would have been better to start a new one @Lizbb
