150mg aspirin over 40?

Has anyone else been prescribed this. I’ve just received a voicemail from my MW saying I’ve to take it as I’m over 40. 150mg seems a lot. Anyone know why she’s suggesting it?

@ElderMillennial it's fine as I've had responses and it's sometimes better to get answers from person that have been through it so as to get the outcome. Thanks

I said that as I was answering the OPs
query rather than yours as I hadn't read yours until after I posted

@ElderMillennial but u can see how feedback may help another person's case and query whether the post is old or not. Thank you

@abeanbaked so sorry to hear that. You have been very helpful thank you 🙏

I declined the aspirin personally (informed choice!). But yes, the risk of certain conditions raises slightly with age, so it's prescribed as a matter of course.

I know this is an old thread, but just wondering g how your pregnancy went @Somethingsnappy as you refused to take aspirin. I'm in the same situation.

I have to also once in the morning and once at night. Due to my BMI and first first pregnancy.
2nd pregnancy I am low risk and my BMI is lower so not needed.

Hi. Wow, yes, this is quite an old thread!

Well, I have 4 children now, and all pregnancies have gone very smoothly.

I can't remember now my reasons for opting out of the aspirin, but I do always tend to do a lot of reading and thinking about decisions like that, so on balance I probably preferred not to over medicate. These kind of recommendations are based on slightly increased risk, but I probably assumed that the very slight increase in risk, for me did not justify taking excess meds.

Why would you prefer not to take them?

Sunflowerkiki · 03/02/2024 17:26

Thank you so much for your reply @Somethingsnappy So good to know you had 4 children and all pregnancies went smoothly. 🙏
I think like you, I don't want to take meds just because I fall into a general higher risk group.
From all the research I've done, aspirin only delays the appearance of early pre eclampsia but doesn't really stops it from happening.
There's so little research really. Recently studies have found that the use of paracetamol during pregnancy is linked to autism and yet, it's still prescribed! No such research has been done with aspirin.
In other countries, they do an ultrasound with doppler at 12 weeks to see how the arteries are and can then tell if one is really at risk or not. Unfortunately couldn't find anywhere that would use a doppler at this stage here.
I'm already 14 weeks and habe been putting off using aspirin but I can't make up my mind. I know if I were to take it, I need to start asap (before 16 weeks or they won't have effect in delaying a possible pre eclampsia).
I do have 3 of what they call moderate risks: age 41, ivf, 1st pregnancy. 😩

Yours was the only comment I could find online of someone who preferred not to take it. 😊

Somethingsnappy · 03/02/2024 19:27

@Sunflowerkiki
I understand. It's difficult having to make these decisions. I had other risk factors too, as I was overweight. I just didn't like the idea of flooding my body with drugs, just in order to make an already very low risk slightly lower. In my case, it was offered to me in my 4th pregnancy, so I did already have a track record of uneventful pregnancies. But I'd probably have declined in my 1st pregnancy too. As you mentioned, we don't really know the risks of taking aspirin. So there are risks either way. My consultant said she was happy enough with my decision not to take it.

Huge congratulations on your pregnancy! It sounds like a much-longed for 1st baby! It was always a magical time for me. I wish you and your baby health and happiness. With anything pregnancy and baby related, a little bit of research along with a good sized dolop of instinct, is a good recipe when decision making!
