Losing mucus plug at 9.5 weeks?

Hi all, I've name changed for this (in case I end up uploading a picture and then I really wouldn't want to be outed!)

I'm 9.5 weeks pregnant and have already had two early scans due to spotting etc which they said was due to a haematoma. However that has died down over the last week or so and I haven't had any bleeding since. But this afternoon I went to the loo for a #2 and I did have to strain a little bit (sorry TMI but I've been getting a bit of constipation) and afterwards a big clump of yellow jelly came away when I wiped. It is about the size of a pound coin and it's definitely jelly as opposed to discharge, it's like a solid that won't come apart at all. I didn't have any bleeding but I am now getting a lot of lower abdominal pain.

Could this have been my mucus plug and my cervix opening in anticipation of a loss? I'm so worried. I've called my GP to see if I can get referred back into the EPU but they will be closed by now so I don't know when I'll get seen by anyone. Thanks for any advice.

I don't have much advice but if you call 111 or your local out of hours GP they can refer you to the EPU so you don't have to wait Smile hope everything is okay!

pinkgreenblue · 14/10/2020 18:42

I have just had a call back from the duty doctor and they said that they won't refer me to EPU unless I start bleeding. I'm actually contemplating trying to book a private scan for tomorrow, would that be ridiculous?

I had something similar with mucus around the same time, only the amount of mucus was smaller. All was ok, I am now approaching 38 weeks.
Mucus plug can regenerate throughout the pregnancy.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 14/10/2020 18:45

If it’s any reassurance I had huge chunks of mucus (sorry tmi) all through trimester 1

pinkgreenblue · 14/10/2020 18:48

Thank you both that is reassuring. I did also text my midwife but she hasn't replied, so I text my friend who is actually also a midwife and asked what she thought and she said it should be ok as long as I'm not getting any pain or bleeding. But now I am in quite a lot of pain, I almost can't stand up properly. I feel stupid because when the doctor rang and asked how bad the pain was 1-10 I said only 2-3 because it really wasn't that bad and that was only 20 mins ago but now I'd say it's more of a 7..

It could be jelly from your bum, especially if you were straining (all quite common in first Trimester) pregnancy does bizarre things to your digestive tract.

Could the pain be constipation? Again, all amplified in your first trimester.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/10/2020 19:01

I think if the pain is getting worse op you need to call back 111

Whatthedoodle · 14/10/2020 19:02

Hi. I have had a lot of mucus which looks a lot like when I lost my mucus plug in previous pregnancies. I’m currently 16 weeks and have been losing it from about 7 weeks, I’ve not really questioned it but it is definitely worse after straining when on the toilet!
In my previous pregnancies I lost it gradually at the end but told it grows back, so I suspect that’s what happening with me. I’m going to mention it to my midwife at my next appointment, but I just wanted to let you know it’s happening to me too and hopefully nothing to worry about.

Whatthedoodle · 14/10/2020 19:04

Sorry just saw your post about being in pain and wanted to add I don’t have any pain accompanied with the mucus I’ve lost, however, I do get a lot of pain when I’m constipated, during and afterwards. Hopefully it’s nothing for you to worry about but I’d call the doctor back just to be on the safe side. I hope all ok!

pinkgreenblue · 14/10/2020 19:19

Thank you everyone it is reassuring to have some advice and to know that some people have also lost mucus.

@lemorella it definitely wasn't from my bum as it came away as I wiped the front, I'm always careful to wipe separately to avoid any infection etc and also I want to ensure that if I have any blood when I wipe that I know whether it came from the front or back (due to constipation)! Gosh this is such a delightful thread.

I am wondering if the pain is trapped gas/wind as it only started after I'd been straining a bit on the loo. I'm not severely constipated but I'm not finding it as easy to go as usual. I moved around a bit and tried to let out a bit of wind :-D and the pain has subsided slightly. Not sure what to do really. I think if the pain gets worse again between now and bedtime then I'll call 111 but if not then I'll wait til the morning and see.

Ouch wind pain is awful... Some reasurring words on here. All the best OP.

lemorella · 14/10/2020 19:29

Constipation pain can really radiate through your whole body when pregnant. I'd try having a warm bath, a warm drink and one paracetamol then laying in bed on your left side with your knees drawn up.

I'd call 111 if the pain really intensifies and you see any blood or any more suspect jelly.

ReeseWitherfork · 14/10/2020 19:31

Another one who lost weird amounts of mucus at weird times and pregnancy was absolutely fine. Fingers crossed the pain goes away with a nice big fart

pinkgreenblue · 14/10/2020 19:59

Thank you these messages are making me feel better.
I had only recently had a scan where everything looked fine and so I had told a few friends and family that we are expecting although I didn't put it on social media or anything. I'm just dreading having to possibly go round everyone telling them that it's all gone wrong and I'm stupidly feeling like I've jinxed my luck by telling people. I don't even really believe in that sort of stuff but I'm just feeling really anxious and worried.

The mucus regenerates all the time. Tbh something no one really mentions is the amount of mucus and discharge you have during pregnancy. It can make an awful mess of your knickers. If you had a huge loss plus blood and cramping I would be concerned but not for discharge alone.

SunnySideUp2020 · 14/10/2020 21:09

I had and still have the weirdest mucus discharge.
It ranges from mostly white to yellowish and has been greenish and orange at one point! It can be thick sometimes watery, or milky. Can be shocking amount like i feel i peed my pants or just bits... and sorry for the tmi but you get the idea.
I mean honestly it's just a weird time. I never experience discharge normally so i was also a bit surprised by the amount and variety of stuff coming out...
I think unless it's painful, or smells odd or there is blood, i wouldn't worry about it.
The odd cramp is also pretty normal.
I did have swabs and tests done at 8 weeks as i got worried but it was nothing just hormones going crazy.

ReeseWitherfork · 14/10/2020 21:17

Aw you haven’t jinxed anything. The people you are excited to tell are the same people you’d be turning for support if god forbid anything did happen. I found the entire thing terrifying until movements became common. I’m sure all will be well, do what you need to do to keep that anxiety at bay.

Thank you everyone I really hope it's just weird discharge but it was honestly the consistency of jelly and it was so huge that it really shocked and worried me. I didn't have anything like this when I was pregnant with my DD.

When it first happened I obviously (stupidly) went straight on Google and the first few things I read were saying that a large jelly mucus would be the plug and if it goes in early pregnancy this is a common sign of miscarriage, and how it shows that the cervix is opening etc etc. I was just starting to feel excited about this pregnancy after previously having spotting etc and we had the scan and it was all looking good and now I feel like I've just got ahead of myself and it's all going wrong.

Dyra · 14/10/2020 22:10

I lost mine a couple of times over the course of my pregnancy. TMI, but it usually happened a few hours after I'd had some good loving with DH. The first time it happened was spontaneously mid first trimester.

Naturally I freaked out, having probably read the same Google results as you. But a midwife colleague reassured me that so long as there was no blood and/or no pain it was fine, and the plug would replenish on its own.

pinkgreenblue · 14/10/2020 22:49

The pain really made me panic but it has subsided a lot now. I’m hoping that’s a good sign!?! Unless it was something bad happening when I was getting the pain and now I’m just waiting for it to come away etc (sorry that’s a horrible phrase but don’t know how else to say it)

Honestly I’m only 10 weeks in and this pregnancy has already been so stressful, I hope that if everything is ok then the next 30 weeks won’t be so bad! I’ve had bleeding, scans due to the haematoma, I’m on blood thinners already, had a UTI and now this!

pinkgreenblue · 15/10/2020 09:13

The doctors phoned me again this morning to see how I was. The one I spoke to yesterday implied that I would be referred to the EPU presumably because of the pain, but the one I spoke to today said no EPU referral unless I start bleeding. Now I’m not sure what to do... Also I know they wouldn’t take any notice of this but my sickness has completely disappeared, every day for 5 weeks I have woken up feeling so nauseous, and this morning it’s absolutely fine. I’m so worried that it’s a MMC and I’m just waiting for everything to come away.

LurkerFinallyPosts · 15/10/2020 09:37

Can you afford a private scan?

pinkgreenblue · 15/10/2020 09:52

@LurkerFinallyPosts yes I could fortunately. I could actually book one this afternoon. Part of me thinks that it’s worth it to save the faff of trying to get into the EPU, you have to convince them that you’re on your deathbed to be seen.

OP posts:
pinkgreenblue · 15/10/2020 10:08

Just called the scan place and apparently they aren’t allowed to book you in until there’s a week gap since your previous scan. I was very surprised at this but then I suppose they have that rule as a way to try and prove that they’re not convincing anxious/vulnerable women into having multiple scans in quick succession.

So that only leaves me with the option of trying to hassle the GP again to send me to EPU!

If it had just been the mucous then I think I could have ignored it. But the pain has been really intense.
