Weight gain in pregnancy - I’m now obese!

Funkypolar · 12/10/2020 19:39

Before pregnancy, my BMI was 24.6. I ran 15k every week. Size 12-14 and 5’7.

I’m 13 weeks and apparently put on so much weight I’m obese! 30.1 is my BMI. I’m in size 14 maternity clothes but friends and family have said despite my bump I do not look as though I’ve gained weight.

I have HG so I’m really not eating much and vomiting every day.

Even the midwife looked confused and said “I didn’t think you were more than a size 14.”

I have to have a GTT test in January because I’m deemed obese.

Feel dreadful. Sad

What weight are you?

Funkypolar · 12/10/2020 19:48

I’m now 83kg I used to be 73kg!

I put in 44lb throughout my entire pregnancy! I felt like a lead weight by the time I got to full term! I was all bump tbf and only went up a dress size for the entire pregnancy thankfully.
Weight gain is perfectly normal and for some, it comes quicker than others.
If you're concerned have a chat with your MW but you sound normal to me xx

smeerf · 12/10/2020 20:00

OP I went from 62kg to 90oddkg in both of my pregnancies and it comes off. Took one year after my first pregnancy to be back to normal and I'm back to 71kg 5mo after the second (so on track to lose it in a year again).

Some women put on weight and retain a lot of water in their pregnancies, some don't, try not to go crazy but don't beat yourself up either.

Sexnotgender · 12/10/2020 20:00

10kg weight gain by 13 weeks is massive, are you sure that’s right? Could your scales be wrong?

I’m 14 weeks and gained 2lbs.

dementedpixie · 12/10/2020 20:01

Could you re-weigh yourself at home and see if you get the same?

Pumpertrumper · 12/10/2020 20:09

Nothing about this sounds right to me OP.
I’d re weigh yourself.

I had HG too and between finding out I was pregnant and going to the booking apt (8weeks) I’d dropped from 72kg to 67kg. My BMI was 23.5 when I started pregnancy and 23 the day I delivered DS!

doadeer · 12/10/2020 20:17

I'm not sure if your BMI calculation was right pre pregnancy, it sounds like you were slightly in the overweight category. That does seem all very sudden. Though I had a similar thing happen.
I was size 10, 5ft 9, 11st 3, by the end of pregnancy I was 14st 7!!! I had a nightmare of a time. And I went from a BMI about 24 (I think) to one over 30 ie obese!
My boobs were gigantic though! I've lost a lot since then and on track to go back to before.

Not sure what to suggest other than check those numbers are right. If you feel healthy I wouldn't worry.

Funkypolar · 12/10/2020 20:19

I dug out my scales at home and they say the same thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My typical day of food (with vomiting) is something like:
Slice of toast
Half a bowl of veggie soup
Yogurt and berries
Half a jacket potato with beans / tuna / cheese or more soup.

I used to eat more before I was pregnant!

Surely you shouldn’t be calculating BMI on a pregnant woman??? That’s not what it’s designed for. I’ve never weighed myself after my booking appointment.

dementedpixie · 12/10/2020 20:24

I put your weight and height into the nhs bmi thing and it put you as Overweight rather than obese

dementedpixie · 12/10/2020 20:25

And it shouldn't be counted against you due to your pregnancy.

Pumpertrumper · 12/10/2020 21:19

@Moo678

The midwives worked out my BMI several times during pregnancy and it was in all my notes. They said it was standard practice. No allowances made for being pregnant. Seemed insane to me but it’s what they do.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 12/10/2020 21:40

Are you really short @Funkypolar? I agree with others it doesnt sound right!

dementedpixie · 12/10/2020 21:46

She says she's 5'7" so not short

dementedpixie · 12/10/2020 21:49

On the nhs bmi checker 5'7" and 83kg gives bmi of 28.7 and overweight (not obese). As you are pregnant you will get heavier than you would normally be so bmi doesn't really work as well

FolkSongSweet · 13/10/2020 09:59

I put on 9kg in my first trimester in first pregnancy (60-69kg). I was on steroids which cause weight gain and also eating was the only think that stopped the nausea. I didn’t put on anything in second trimester but then put on loads again towards the end and ended up about 83kg - so over 3 stone weight gain by the end. It took me a year to lose it and it happened in sudden drops. I was 75kg after the birth, then plateaued til weaning at 6 months when I dropped to about 67kg, then dropped to 62kg when I stopped bf (the last 2kg never came off - pregnant again now!). I think some women’s bodies just react differently to the hormones. If you’re eating healthily don’t beat yourself up about it.

PopsicleHustler · 13/10/2020 10:21

I have been classed as morbidly obese and to be honest the term itself, disgusts me. Makes me feel like I am a massive hippo. I'm size 18, size 20 with bump. I intend to to lose weight and go back to a 14, that's my happy size and I am naturally curvy. And happy that way. But the way they say my bmi is so high like I am a massive hippo. I'm very active as well and I dont eat a lot of junk food. I am quite moderate with my diet. I've definitely lost weight on my arms and thighs since being pregnant and hoping to lose a bit more after having baby in Jaunary, God willing

Moo678 · 13/10/2020 11:05

@Pumpertrumper

Weird - I’ve had three babies - never been weighed after booking appointment I’ve never seen them calculate a BMI. I wouldn’t pay any attention if they did. It’s a flawed system at best and not designed for use in pregnancy.

Mimiwish · 13/10/2020 14:35

BMI goes out the window when you're pregnant, surely! I just don't think that BMI can be calculated accurately when you're carrying so much water and fluid; let alone the new boobs and thighs!

I went from 61kg pre pregnancy to around 68kg on the second time I was weighed (I can't remember what week, but maybe about three months in). I'm now in the seventies and not delighted by it, but definitely know that the BMI calculator would give an utterly inaccurate result! (I'm 25 wks).

And that really does not sound like a lot of food! I'm like a carb fiend since being pregnant. Hopefully all will be fine. It's good to have the GTT test just to be sure.

Me personally, after seeing that number on the scales the other day myself, will be trying to eat with a bit less vigour. But if you're really not eating much, it's worth a chat with your doc.

xx

Oneandabean · 13/10/2020 17:11

I think some calculations are off there. I’m 5’6 and my booking in weight was 82.4 kg which gave me a Bmi of 28.5.
After your initial booking in weight they shouldn’t use bmi as it’s not intended for pregnancy.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2020 17:16

www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator/
I used this with the info given
@Oneandabean it gives you a bmi of 29.1

Oneandabean · 13/10/2020 17:40

@dementedpixie I’m just going on what’s in my pregnancy notes.

Funkypolar · 13/10/2020 17:48

Thanks for the comments. My DH has told me not to worry about it.

Today I have managed to keep down a single slice of toast. I did try to tell the midwife that most food doesn’t stay down and she said not to binge on unhealthy food and eat brown bread and fruit. Binging would be extremely unlikely!

I had planned to do some light exercise today but vomiting 7 times and feeling weak and dizzy meant that didn’t happen.

OP posts:
lockdownpregnancy · 13/10/2020 18:13

@Funkypolar whilst your MW is correct you also eat whatever you can keep down. If that's fish & chips every day or sweets then so be it! Whilst unhealthy it's better than nothing.
All being well your sickness will ease.
Don't worry about exercise at the minute. Just try going for a walk xx
