Cheeky wipes questions

Hi all, I brought some Cheeky Wipes and received them today, I'm excited but I have a couple of Qs and their FAQs on the website aren't working.

  1. Do I not use the essential oils at the start? I.e. with a newborn? I assume I can still use the one for the mucky box because its just going to go in the wash? So is it just water to begin with?
  2. How long can I leave the clean wipes in the box in the water, as in, how often should I be looking to fill the box? Do I just do this at the start of the day? Or just until I've used them all?

Any other advice for using these gratefully received Grin

Following as I’ve just bought what sounds like the same starter kit as you @GhostWorld. The oils smell really good in the box!

Boringnamechanging · 07/10/2020 13:18

I've never really use the oils, I just use plain water and nothing on mucky ones (I just dry pail them with the nappies)

I just chuck a dozen or so wipes in the box damp (was more in the early days when baby was little) if I finish them I chuck a dozen or so more in. With the ones I take out I take them dry and stick under the tap (or water bottle)

PolarBearStrength · 07/10/2020 13:53

I wouldn’t use the oils personally. Water works well and is safer for delicate skin. We didn’t use any products on DS until he was over 6 months, other than a very small amount of barrier cream if his bottom at night once he was in night nappies and not being changed every few hours overnight.

I find it much easier to store wipes dry and wet as we go. If I was storing wet, I’d change the water daily.

I don't think I've ever used it in the clean box. I used the oil for cleaning instead (couple of drops in the mop bucket with soap, made the house smell lovely, check the ingredients if you have pets though) Grin. I store them dry as well. I've used them since I had dc3(7), they're brilliant for just about every type of cleaning, I still have some of my originals, I did top up when dc5(3) was born though.

Just jumping on to say I LOVED using cheeky wipes, my ex was never in to them though, absolutely hated them.

We didn't use oils to begin with, just water and like many others on here only kept a few damp at a time (nothing worse than musty cloths)
But as the kids got older, I added a drop or two just as it made them feel fresher when wiping hands and faces etc.

Ahh man, I can feel my first new baby purchase coming on!! Haha!!

PintOfBovril · 07/10/2020 14:09

Same here really. I'd steer clear of the oils and we just use a bit of boiled water for the clean box as it doesn't go as mildew-y smelling so quickly.. We usually have about 2 days worth of wipes in there then empty it out and dry it, then refill.

Superscientist · 07/10/2020 16:38

I am using cheeky and muslinZ wipes, I store them dry and wet them when I use them with just water. We are also using cloth nappies so they just go in with them and get washed every day/every other day.

I actually prefer the muslinZ wipes they are 20 x 20 in size rather than 15 x 15 cm for the cheeky wipes.

Bluebelltulip · 07/10/2020 16:55

I didn't use the oil for newborn and when I did I used less than it says. To begin with I used the mucky box and think the oil does help, now on DC2 and using cloth nappies so the wipes go with the nappies. I put enough in the box for a few days, doesn't go musty unless I leave it in direct sunlight.

I have separate ones for bums and and faces. I use the face ones for my eldest after meals.

Happy2be · 07/10/2020 18:23

I used the oils from newborn and never had an issue. I do think they advise not to for the first few weeks but we did.

lookingatthings · 07/10/2020 18:27

I never used the oils, but I do use coconut oil to clean up sticky poops. Works a treat.

Caspianberg · 07/10/2020 18:29

We just bought the wipes, not full kit.

Wipes are all stored dry in basket, I then just get a Tupperware of fresh warm water for each change and wet the wipes as needed. No oils.
Dirty ones get thrown in with the washable nappies

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/10/2020 18:29

I used the oils but only a tiny bit to start. Still using the wipes now and DD is 10! Grin

olderthanyouthink · 07/10/2020 18:34

Don't bother with oils

When they're tiny and you're getting through wipes like nobodies business you can wet them all and just go through them. Now we're not using so many and they're all over the flat we leave them dry/washing machine damp otherwise they can smell musty after a few days.

GhostWorld · 08/10/2020 08:21

Thank you everyone, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed as I was thinking they would just be like an eco friendly version of disposable wipes, ready to go without much inconvenience! But happy to do it anyway, its nice to hear how much everyone likes them.

I got the orange oil and the lavender oil, 2packs of the microfibre cloths and a clean box.

I find that if I wash the wipes and store them dry then add 10 per time into the box it works out best. I then only have to do one or two washes a week with the reusable nappies I’ve used

I don’t use fabric softener on the wipes (as I wash with the nappies) and I don’t use them on bums (not got time for that shite!). I use them for messy hands and faces, cleaning down the high chair and then giving the surfaces a quick wipe.

When ur having 3 meals a day at home u can easily use 6+ a day.

I got the multi colour ones as I though white may stain easy.

My twins arrive in a few weeks and I haven't decided how I will use the wipes with them (if at all). Just water is normally recommended for newborns and as the poo is so horrific I may stick with disposables until they get to the solids stage.

firstimemamma · 08/10/2020 08:39

Here is how I use them. I just use a pound land plastic Tupperware box. I put the water in first - fill it up to about a quarter of the box (guessing by eye) then a few drops of little lamb essential oil then add the wipes, I put 15 wipes in the box. The box becomes empty every other day. I use the zero twist cotton ones for ds' bum.

In my son's buggy I have a smaller box which holds about 4 wipes and gets changed every 3-4 days.

I have a stash of the minky cheeky wipes in the kitchen. I keep them dry in the kitchen cupboard and when I need to wipe ds' face I just take a wipe and wet it using warm water from the tap.

I didn't use cheeky wipes when ds was a newborn so no direct experience there but I'm sure you'd be fine without the oils. When ds was little I used cotton wool and warm water.

I'd also highly recommend little lambs reusable nappies Smile

GhostWorld · 08/10/2020 08:57

Thank you - reusable nappies is the next step but as a FTM I'm going to get through the first few months before attempting that!

@GhostWorld its definitely more work than disposable but worth it. Specially if youre looking to go on to reusable nappies. Good luck

AegonT · 08/10/2020 09:44

I used cloth wipes with our cloth nappies. I just wet them with warm water under the tap when needed and chucked them in the nappy bucket after (no soaking). They still did a much better job than disposables.

NWnature · 04/11/2020 10:52

@GhostWorld I’ve just started using cheeky wipes on our newborn . We have the starter kit with terry towel ones and I’m using for nappy changes. I did use the oils and wet all of them! So dunno if that was a bad move. The fresh ones still smell ok at the moment (day 3). They seem a lot more gentle than water wipes on the bottom.

Feetupteashot · 04/11/2020 22:37

I did all the oils but with newborn just used the spray. The oils keep the wipes fresher a day longer. Not worth keeping wet fresh wipes unless doing 4+ nappies a day. Never got round to taking them out with me but they were brilliant at home

Mmr224 · 04/11/2020 22:47

I'm a ftm, we're using the same kit but only got it about week 3. I do about 10 at a time in the wet box, and use the rose oil or lavender oil about 2 drops. I was given disposable wipes too which we are slowly using up in the nappy bag but when they run out I plan to use cheeky wipes out of the house too. Have found them no effort to use and must have already saved a lot of disposable wipes at home.

We were given cloth nappies too, but our baby was small and they didn't fit well. She's 4 months now and hoping to try the cloth nappies this month, at least for in the house, as think they will fit now. May keep using disposable nappies put of the house (not much this year!) And at night til we see how it goes.

movingonup20 · 04/11/2020 22:54

I put a squirt of the lavender baby bath in my reusable wipes box

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 05/11/2020 06:26

Hi. I have a 7 month old and have been using cheeky wipes since day 1. I put the wipes in the clean box with water, use what I need, then when done put the used wipe in the mucky box which is also filled with water. Its just as a easy as disposable wipes really, but they're a lot better at cleaning. I suppose I wash them every other day or so. I did use the oils but when they ran out didnt replace them. They're nice to have, but not necessary.

Jessnance · 27/04/2021 10:40

Hi. I've been using cheeky wipes and love them but they've become quite rough, I use ecover softner but it dosent help. My boy has sensitive skin to so apprehensive about using the essential oils.
Any advice would he ace! Ta x
