Buggies from birth - the great debate

I'm quite sure this question has been raised many times but as a first timer I'm keen to ask advice and thoughts of the pros on MN who have the real experience of which ones are good. On the march thread (as I'm sure has happened in others) there are lots of really useful points made about different buggies but spread throughout the thread and I can't remember who said what about which one so I thought I'd raise a thread (am i doing it in the right place?)
Obviously everyone can add questions/thoughts but the main ones I'm considering are
Mamas and Papas - Pilko
Phil and Teds
Micralite
Bugaboo....

(I think!) There are millions but all thoughts gratefully received.

was v happy with my bugaboo, very portable, light, has done two babies!

but if i knew then what i knew now i would have bought a phil and ted's from the off. its easy to move around and public transportable

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 15:58

again the buzz is only suitable from 6 months so you have to rely on the fact that your baby won't out grow the carrycot before then which is often unlikely.

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 15:58

3d is a fab pram but is incredibly heavy and wouldn't be too good if you ever need to carry it anywhere, i have one and find that it struggles with a toddler in it- somehow the steering just goes wrong! but if you plan to swap to a maclaren or similar- a very good choice (unless you live at the top of some steep stairs }

The silver cross range is very good at the moment and for anyone who needs something small and portable the dazzle is good. I know it looks weird but it is actually a very good pram, the carrycot is roomy and sturdy and surprisingly the handles are comfortable to use! As its a silver cross it is sturdy and well made and their custonmer service is 10 times better than M&P!!

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:00

btw the fisher price one is only 8.5kg or 8.8kg.

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:00

ps the fisher price kuji is just the britax vigour 4! FP and britax are now one and the same!!

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:01

yes but it is much cheaper!!

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:02

hang on how can it be? the britax vigour is over 11kg.

susiemj · 11/10/2007 16:05

Preggers again. I take your point about not buying one that is convertable into a double but you did mention there are 'lots'. I've looked at the Phil and Teds, the Mutsy and the icandy. Could you mention any others?

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:05

have a look at it against the vigour 4- new version, its the same frame etc as the vigour 4, bayamo and one of the m&p's!! and the same price at £199.99, also compare fp carseats etc- they have taken over the bottom of the britax range

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:10

where can i see the vigour 4 new version?

CarGirl · 11/10/2007 16:10

I think the pramette/3D is a good buy for a first baby, nice to have them rear facing and most babies prefer forward facing from 6 months, small and light enough for most boots and public transport, sturdy enough if you end up with large children!

Absolutely love my bugaboo frog (the best I've ever owned for ease of pushing, comfort etc) but I don't like the way you have to take it apart, but I don't need to put it in a boot often.

The bugaboo bee is a great compromise for the urban dweller IMO, much lighter, easy to fold, compact, no punctures, outstanding suspension etc etc etc etc

Phil & ted a great double but nothing special as a single unless you are going to go off roading regularly.

I would recommend buying a good system 2nd hand (but you do have to know what you are looking for!) and buying a new buggy if you have the need to later (as they get trashed so can be dodgier to buy 2nd hand!)

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:10

bertini, chicco, bebe confort, etc- there are loads, but the icandy is my favourite at the moment- i have ordered one myself (yes- i'm having twins!!)

i would look at any buggy with its capabilities as a single firstly- great to have a good double but not when you've just got one very small newborn- who in the p&t is basically in a three wheeled pushchair- you could get one of them for £70 so i don't see the merits until 18 months or so later ( by which time there will be a new 'it' product to solve all your problems!!)

certainly its a bonus to look at ones that convert but i would never suggest it being 'the decision maker'.

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:12

britax website? boots?? kiddicare is bound to have it on there! i'll have a quick look!

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:13

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:16

ah thankyou. what's different about it compared to the old one?

btw when did britax and FP become the same people?

ThursdayNext · 11/10/2007 16:20

imjin, I have a Micralite which is excellent. Had the carrycot for when DS was a newborn, and still use the buggy now he is 2.3.
Nearly everyone else I know has ended up buying a Mclaren or similar later on.
The Micralite is very light and folds up very easily and small. The big back wheels make it really easy to bump up stairs, so when I use the tube I can just bump rather than wait for someone to help me carry it.

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:20

not that long ago 6mnths maybe- but if you look at fp car seats etc- they are the old bottom of the range britax ones that were discontinued!!

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:21

how do you bump up stairs? i can bump down but not up!

spugs · 11/10/2007 16:21

so is the britax vigor the same sort of thing as the hauck infinity? bloomin heck - so much to choose from, have been looking at the cheeper bugaboo as its not much more then the herbie, do you have to take it to pieces to fold it or can you just chuck it in boot (boot is big)

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:22

just pull it woman

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:22

you have to take the seat off

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:23

i prefer to get some nice young man to help tbh!

preggersagain · 11/10/2007 16:24

you harlot!!!!!

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 16:35

does the new vigour 4 have solid wheels now instead of air tyres?

asicsgirl · 11/10/2007 16:36

Hi, we've got a Micralite but tbh it's only really come into its own since ds has been bigger. Had the carrycot from birth which was great for carrying him around the house but seemed rattly and not cosy when on the buggy. Ended up taking him everywhere in the sling (which is the other solution to the buggy-from-birth Q). Micralite was supposed to be suitable from 6 months but ds swam in it - the straps don't adjust much and he always ended up slumped down. Since about 1 year it has been fine. It is pretty good on rough terrain, is much lighter than the off-road monsters, and folds up really small (why we bought it originally) but there's very little room for shopping/ other stuff, and it's a bugger to fold sometimes (can't do it with one hand).
Having said all that DP loves it! Definitely bloke-friendly...
