I took 4 outfits and vests with me and a little bonnet.
I got through all of them as I was in overnight as I had DS late evening.
Babies are quite sicky their first day or so, so you'll end up changing their clothes quite bit as they will spit up quite bit xx

Thank you. I think I’ll pack a couple of cute ones and then a pack of plain white sleepsuits

I’ve got 3 newborn and 3 upto 1 month, vests and sleepsuits. Hope that’s enough! Couple of hats and scratch mittens too.

peachypetite · 04/10/2020 19:49

Ordered a cardigan today too

@peachypetite the wards are so flipping warm I doubt your baby will need a cardigan! Just take a really lovely blanket with you instead. That way if it's chilly (highly doubtful in the ward!) you can fold the blanket to make more layers for baby.
I actually had a fan on it was that warm!

peachypetite · 04/10/2020 21:15

I meant cardigan for coming home 😊

I’ve packed 5 newborn sleepsuits, 5 newborn vests, a cardigan and a hat. I’m hoping that will be enough!

27andcounting · 05/10/2020 06:40

I got told in my antenatal class they recommend 5 full outfits plus your coming home outfit. I packed up these little grab bags.
Each contains
Sleep suit (with attached mittens)
Vest
Socks (don't know why cause I chose sleep suits 🤦🏼‍♀️)
Muslin
Hat
Bib

Really helped with packing, hoping they help once I've had the baby.

I’ve packed 4 outfits - 2 newborn and 2 up to one month all with vests and hats to go with them and a cardigan for coming home. Also a blanket and some muslins.
Not sure whether I should put in a 5th outfit now reading about babies needing a lot of changes to start with...

Mummyspider27 · 05/10/2020 07:17

Better to take more and not use them than not enough. Definitely take a cardigan for coming home. Babies don’t keep their temperature well to start, my baby was born in June and was fully wrapped up with blankets and a hat for the first few days even though I was sweating one out!! X

Six bodysuits. Six sleepsuits. A knitted hat. Two thin cardigans. A blanket. Nappies. Wipes/cotton.

I packed 6 as I was expecting to be there for 3 days after my c section although I didn’t need them all.

Odile13 · 05/10/2020 07:27

As well as the outfits definitely take a few muslins. We only took one and I wished I had more.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 05/10/2020 07:40

I took two first size and two 0-3. Each in a ziplock bag with vest and baby grow. No fancy outfits. I was in overnight and that was fine for us.

randomsabreuse · 05/10/2020 07:46

I used 3 in the first couple of hours with my first...

Meconium, inept nappy changes, baby posseting up my blood she'd swallowed on the way out....

DC2 caught me out because you have to be way more aware of positioning during nappy changes for boys - make sure penis is pointing straight down in the nappy! So got through loads with him.

Also bring more pants/dark coloured bottoms than you could possibly anticipate for yourself...

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 07:46

Thanks. To be honest their bits are so small it’s not like it makes much difference adding a few extra!

My little one was quite small when he was born so needed small baby clothing, what I had packed was just so big. I was measuring big so I'd packed newborn and up to 3 months, no chance. I was in hospital for 4 days so family had to buy and drop clothes off. Babies are sick quite a bit and poo a lot so better to take more clothes than you actually need.

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 08:05

Good shout on the muslins too!

I took 2 tiny baby grows and vests, 2 newborn and 2 0-3.

Only used the tiny baby sets.

We were in 48 hours. Neither of mine were sucky babies and we barely used muslins either.

PopsicleHustler · 05/10/2020 10:20

I am currently expecting our 5th baby and now I am literally going in with one bag.
I had a massive roller suitcase, a holdall, a carrier bag and my handbag. Honestly was so unnecessary.

This time I will be packing :
4 vests 4 sleepsuits. A snowsuit for when we leave as it will be winter. 0 size nappies. One pack should do it. And one going home outfit and maybe 4 or 5 hats.

ALL the other times, I have over packed. This time a small holdall or small wheel bag and a bag full of snacks. As hospital food can be quite pants.

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 10:24

@PopsicleHustler wow you’re a seasoned pro. What would you say are essentials for us, rather than baby?

OP posts:
sleepyhead · 05/10/2020 10:27

I was really rubbish at putting on nappies at first (also my newborns were quite skinny so it was tricky to avoid gaps at the thighs), hence going through waaaay more sleepsuits in the first 24 hours than I would have thought possible!

Yesterdayforgotten · 05/10/2020 10:32

I took 5 X large ikea ziplocked labelled sandwich bags. In each one I put a sleepsuit, bodysuit, soft cotton hat, bib and a nappy. I took a large sandwich bag with spare nappies in and wipes and nappy sacks too. I then took a little knitted hat, cardigan & blanket for baby to go home in. These made up sandwich bags fitted nicely in babys hospital bag. I then kept excess supplies in car. It made it so much easier just grabbing a bag and also made it easier for dh to get baby an outfit out.

Yesterdayforgotten · 05/10/2020 10:35

I found a cardigan and blanket and hat better for winter rather than a big bulky snowsuit. Snow suits I found would swamp a newborn and aren't considered safe to use with a carseat either meaning youd have to take it off before travelling home.

Yesterdayforgotten · 05/10/2020 10:36

I also took a pack of muslims too...
