Progesterone after recurrent miscarriages

Sallyjo27 · 27/09/2020 16:19

I’ve had 3 miscarriages- 2 MMC at 7/8 weeks & 1 CP I had some slight bleeding in my first pregnancy but think it was after the heartbeat had stopped. Anyway I’ve had my appointment with a consultant and shes told me to take progesterone as soon as I get a bfp (currently ttc again). So my question is has anyone had recurrent miscarriages and then had a successful pregnancy with the use of progesterone? I thought it was only used for women who have had bleeding in early pregnancy? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi Op sorry to hear about your miscarriages.... I don't have advice but do you mind if I follow? I've had 3 miscarriages and waiting for my appointment from the miscarriage clinic xx

Sallyjo27 · 27/09/2020 16:39

@Furbabymum15 no not at all, I’m sorry for your losses, the wait in my local hospital was 11 months- so I went private and had an appointment within two weeks. The consultant is writing to the hospital and the gp to ask them to do the blood clotting test but said she’ll do it if they won’t. She also said that it’s up to us if we want the Karyotyping tests done but she feels at this stage not to have them done as more often than not they come back normal. she said she’s writing to the gp to ask her to prescribe me progesterone for 12 weeks to start as soon as I get a bfp. As soon as I get pregnant I’ve got to ring her and they’ll arrange a scan for 6/7 weeks and if there’s a heartbeat I can take aspirin too. She said there’s more chance of me having a baby than miscarrying again so that made me feel better xx

Currently in the process of this after 3 miscarriages. So far so good and I'm now 9 and 3!

Sallyjo27 · 27/09/2020 16:51

@Pua31 that’s brilliant news! Congratulations ♥️ Xx

I have had three misscarrages this year. I started aspirin at just after ovulation and began progesterone at 6 weeks. I'm currently 10+1 and all scans have so far shown a healthy heartbeat.

All my misscarrages were before 10 weeks so I'm hoping this one will keep going.

Sallyjo27 · 27/09/2020 16:56

@Quail15 thank you for your reply! It’s given me hope. congratulations ♥️ I hope you get your bring home baby xx

I had 4 miscarriages and was then prescribed progesterone, amongst other medications, and now have a healthy and happy 2.5 year old. I'm currently on week 10 and having progesterone (and others) again.

Sallyjo27 · 27/09/2020 17:39

@Nimsay1 I’m sorry for your losses and congratulations! Could I ask what other medication your on please? X

For the first pregnancy I had intralipid treatment for several months prior to trying, then during the first 12 weeks, as well as clexane and prednisolone. For this pregnancy I have not had prednisolone because of risks with Covid.

RuthieMc · 27/09/2020 21:19

Hi, I’m sorry to read about your miscarriages. I had 3 and was seen by a recurrent miscarriage consultant who prescribed progesterone, aspirin and recommended a high dose omega 3 and high dose folic acid, I am currently 20+3 weeks. Hope it works out for you x

WankyDoodleDandy · 27/09/2020 21:25

Yes, after 3 miscarriages I was put on progesterone and aspirin, and had a healthy pregnancy (& received a cheeky little baby who is currently refusing to sleep!)

SherHar123 · 28/09/2020 14:38

I had progesterone support with my last pregnancy after having very low results. My boy is now nearly 2. We had to go private to get the supplements as the nhs will not help until you have endured miscarriage 3 times. The doctor who prescribed them to me said they had been proven to help many women continue with their pregnancies successfully. I hope it all works out for you x

Sorry for your losses. It's so hard. I had 2 MC this year but given 3yrs TTC before my first and my age (37) my EPU prescribed progesterone up to 17 wks - I feel really lucky that they made an exception. I also had the thrombophilia test which was normal so not given aspirin. I called as soon as I got my BFP at 3wks and have been "taking" twice a day ever since. I'm now 13+1 and saw my healthy baby at my 12 week scan last week (they also scanned at 7 and 9 weeks - all fine). My boss's wife also had a successful pregnancy with progesterone after recurrent loss. It's based on the PRISM trial. NHS says it was inconclusive but RCOG seem to support it. Good luck!

MariaDingbat · 28/09/2020 15:43

I'm sorry to hear of your losses. I had two miscarriages last year but I'm 39 so they referred me to the recurrent miscarriage clinic. All bloods came back normal thankfully and I got a prescription for progesterone pesseries to take from BFP until 16 weeks. I fell pregnant 6 months after my last miscarriage and am now 30 weeks with a very wriggly and healthy bump!

I also took metafolate and ubiquinol prior to conceiving this pregnancy as advised in 'it starts with the egg'. I don't know if it helped but it didn't seem to hurt.

Some really reassuring responses on here. I've had three miscarriages and will be having my first bloods taken at Tommy's on Monday

Sallyjo27 · 28/09/2020 18:26

Thank you all for your replies they’ve been very reassuring and I am so sorry for your losses.
I will keep the thread updated incase any one else has the same problem. I’m willing to give anything a go just hope that it works for us and we get our rainbow baby x

Progesterone and baby aspirin would be worth trying in my opinion. I had three miscarriages in a row and now have two DC. I took progesterone with both of my successful pregnancies and aspirin with the first (couldn't with the second as I was still breastfeeding).

I wish you the best of luck as it's such a horrible time. Fingers crossed they work for you too x

Furbabymum15 · 16/10/2020 08:59

So sorry to read of all you're losses, can I ask what dosage of progesterone and aspirin you all take plz xx

HalGem99 · 19/10/2020 19:57

I've been following this thread as I've had two missed miscarriages this year, one in April and one in September. I feel like I don't know where to turn as my GP has referred me to Professor Quenby and the referral has been accepted but it's going to be months before I get an appointment so I enquired with her secretary about going private but was told she doesn't do private referrals anymore and the only thing they could offer was the NK cell testing at a cost of £540 but they have 200 people on the waiting list so it will be at least a month until I'm seen and I asked how would I know if I needed that test and was told I don't know until I have it?? I've got a telephone appointment with my GP tomorrow and I was going to ask if they could do blood tests but I don't know which ones I should be asking for? Also, I've read a lot of success stories about progesterone and baby aspirin, is this something the gp could prescribe? Any help would be appreciated xx

HalGem99 · 19/10/2020 20:01

Sallyjo27 where did you go for your private referral and how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? Xx

alpinia · 19/10/2020 20:06

Oh, can I jump on this as well? Did those of you who were prescribed aspirin and progesterone have tests that show you had any issues? I had 3 miscarriages last year and was referred for tests which revealed nothing.

So I was discharged from that clinic and they told me to just call back when I'm pregnant again. Anyway, it's been a year since the last miscarriage so now I'm waiting for the infertility clinic, but just wondered if there is anything else I can do?

Daffodil21 · 19/10/2020 21:21

@HalGem99 I'm currently pregnant after 2 mcs, I had a video appointment at Nova fertility and the dr prescribed me progesterone and a lot of other things. The app was £150 and the meds cost £300. I have no idea if any of it will do any good but it's worth a go!

Hope this helps

You will find loads of information on miscarriage and pregnancy loss.
I looked on there after my 3rd miscarriage last year. I read up on the many possibilities to why i was miscarriaging when i have children before and so has my now partner.
With my 3rd miscarriage the hospital did an early scan at 6 weeks because i was so anxious. There was a heart beat but also blood behind the baby. This is where i believed i had this blood clotting disorder.

When we decided try again i started taking folic acid straight away a month before ovulation and 75mg of aspirin. We had a scan at 9 weeks and and found out twins where doing just fine. All my previous miscarriages where before 10 weeks so it was a nervous wait for the 12 week scan but again everything was ok.
The midwife upped my aspirin to 150mg at night, they said which is for babies and also put my on clexane injections, to help stop me from getting blood clots.
Inreality tests are not needed.
Good luck with everything.

Coffee4me · 19/10/2020 21:29

Also watching with interest. I've had 3 mc and had tests earlier this year with fertility clinic. They found no issues (except my age I suppose but they didn't make a big deal of it). I was prescribed progesterone until 12 weeks + aspirin. I'm under 7 weeks now (seen a heartbeat in a scan today!). I was told at 12 weeks placenta should have taken over, but looks like for some it's been issued for longer , has anyone done research on this?

SS123456 · 23/10/2020 15:52

Ladies can I join you on this thread. I miscarried this week after 13 month ttc 😔. I think progesterone is my issue too. Can anyone recommend a private gp who will prescribe it?
