Big winter coat or proper maternity winter coat?

I'm about 3mths currently, will be spending my second trimester over the duration of the winter months and never been pregnant before.

My coats are too small for me currently, it's not that much of an issue at the moment as I can get away with them not done up. The only coat I can do up is a waterproof but that's not going to be warm enough when the temperature really drops.

So do I buy a proper mat coat or just one a few sizes up? Currently size 14.

I would wait and see if you can. I had my Baby beginning of May this year so was pregnant all winter basically. ( and live in snowy country)

I actually found it fine with coat, thick loose waterfall cardigan and thick scarf. The cardigan and scarf covered the gap at the front when not done up.

Also if you have a coat that buttons up you can just do top button up for ages. So you could maybe buy a nicer coat like this you can wear for years after

Last month 8-9 months I was too fat to go out for long walks anyway ( and well Covid!)

I think my best maternity purchase was my maternity parker coat from H&M, I got it for £25 in the sale. I can't drive so travelled everywhere by public transport and it was so so cozy I loved it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/09/2020 19:08

I don't generally do my jackets up anyway, but someone told me you can get coats that have an insert so you can do up around your bump and then take that away so its just a normal coat after the baby is born. Dont know what they are called though, sorry.

Tangfastica · 26/09/2020 19:20

Cool thanks. I spend quite a bit of time outside during the day as part of my job so think I need something that can be done up, although thick scarves etc would be lovely they'll probably drive me mad flapping about in the wind!

I bought a cheap waterproof larger coat when pregnant. I just used to wear a thick cardigan underneath (although I was often hot so was never really felt the cold weather !). It was useful across all my pregnancies as it was not too thick. I still use it for dog walks and used to wear it to take toddlers places where it was muddy.

Lockdownseperation · 26/09/2020 19:34

Get one you can baby wear in too.

Shelby30 · 26/09/2020 19:36

I would get maternity one they fit so much better. I got a beautiful maternity winter coat in new look. Only problem was that it was more for when your nearly due. You needed a decent sized bump in it so really has to be at least 6 months for it to look alright. I was due April so it was perfect for last couple of months.

I had another baby in winter but needed something lighter for the autumn and got a coat with a hooded baby insert from bonprix. It's not the prettiest and was more expensive than my one from new look but it was waterproof and I can actually still wear it as the sides zipped up to make more room so when done up it's just normal size.

ChalkDinosaur · 26/09/2020 19:37

I ended up getting the JoJo one with the insert (good for carrying the baby in a sling too). I felt like it was expensive (£80) but was worth it - although I was due in Jan so was massive when it was cold! A normal coat in a bigger size would also work if you're on a budget. My tip would be, if you're thinking of getting one, get it soon so you can make the most of having it!

skylarkdescending · 26/09/2020 19:38

I would second the H&M maternity parka. I got one second hand on eBay and it was in great condition having been barely worn by the previous owner. I passed it on to a friend who wore it through 2 pregnancies after me!

No way could I have fit in a normal coat by halfway through my pregnancy.

FolkSongSweet · 26/09/2020 19:39

I got a big Uniqlo down coat in my first pregnancy (baby born in spring) - it was a normal coat in a massive size and I wore it the winter after the baby was born too. You won’t be at your biggest over winter so I think I’d do this if I were you. This time round baby is due Nov so I’m getting a maternity/baby-wearing coat because I’ll have a newborn over winter and use the sling a lot. You prob won’t need that because your baby will be 6 months ish by next winter.

Craddle64 · 26/09/2020 19:41

Nooo get a mat coat! Sizing up made me look huge everywhere and very frumpy.. if you a tall skinny bean pole with a small bump a size up might work but if curvier/shorter you would be swamped... you could always sell it on later.

Tickly · 26/09/2020 19:42

If you need to be out for work lots then it's probably worth investing. Especially true if you plan more than one baby. Try eBay if you're after the more expensive brands like Isabella Oliver and Seraphine. I got away without but already owned a wrap over wooden coat which was fine (Oct and Jan babies).

HanPanPeg · 26/09/2020 19:42

I had an April baby and got through the beast of east with a maternity coat from
H&M.

It wasn’t the warmest of coats but I found being able to zip it up whilst wearing layers was crucial in jan and feb.

Plus doing up a coat is really useful if you can’t hold an umbrella for whatever reason (I’m currently pregnant and back in the maternity coat occasionally when it rains (even though it’s not that cold) and I’m pushing a buggy back from nursery so I’m not soaked).

I’m pro coat!

GoingBackTo505 · 26/09/2020 19:43

I would if it was my first baby and I planned to have more, but I'm due my second and most definitely last baby in December so I'm just going to make do with the coats I've got with scarves and jumpers and stuff. Maternity coats are so expensive for the little time you get to wear them.

FelicityBob · 26/09/2020 19:45

I had a March baby and was in my husbands coat right at the end, not a good look. Wish I’d bought a maternity coat. Would probably re-sell on eBay for a good price

Baypony · 26/09/2020 19:46

Proper maternity coats are so expensive and to find a good waterproof one is very hard (in my experience). Pre pregnancy I was size 10. When Aldi did their ski wear promotion, around 1st week in Nov, I brought a normal ski coat (warm and waterproof) in size 16. It was wonderful, had a lovely adjustable hood, zipped up over the bump right up until I gave birth, wore it to and from hospital when baby was born, machine washable and was only £20. After baby was born (January) I wore it out with baby in the sling for several months after and it covered both of us and kept us both warm. It was probably the most useful bit of clothing I had whilst pregnant. I still have it in the wardrobe now as it was so excellent I can’t bear to part with it!

fitzbilly · 26/09/2020 19:48

Get a mamaway maternity and baby wearing coat. Amazing. Well with the money.

proworrier · 26/09/2020 19:52

Also recommend the jo jo coat- I've worn mine for two pregnancies and also wore my first in a sling in it and will be doing the same this winter with my second I imagine. Lovely coat and nice and cosy. Worth every penny! Mine is a green parka style.

Tootle10 · 26/09/2020 19:58

I didn't bother getting a maternity coat during my first pregnancy (i figured I'd make do without as I was due in January) but really regretted it. None of my coats would fasten, they felt uncomfortable and I was cold!

Second time round I bought one from seraphine with a baby wearing panel. I wore it literally every day over the winter and the following winter too with baby in the sling. It was expensive but worth every penny.

If you're thinking of having more children I'd make the investment now, I imagine they have some resale value too.

Tangfastica · 26/09/2020 20:28

The responses are brilliant thank you! So I've decided to invest...now I'm a 12/14 top, 14/16 bottom and short, very much a pear!!! Should I get a size 14 or size 16 maternity coat?

burglarbettybaby · 26/09/2020 20:33

Get a 16 in a maternity coat. Be nice and comfortable and a better shape. I invested in a few things (very nice black maternity dress etc) and was so glad I did. A coat will give you so much use.

Heyha · 26/09/2020 20:37

I got my maternity coat from here www.vertbaudet.co.uk, it had a zip out hooded baby cover panel too. I'm a bit gutted I can't justify wearing it this winter as neither pregnant nor baby-wearing as it was such a lovely cozy coat. Can't help with size although I think I erred on the size of bigger, generally, for comfort.

Tangfastica · 26/09/2020 20:49

Great, thanks all!

I'm having an end Oct baby but if I was to spend longer pregnant over winter I'd deffo get a maternity coat with an insert so that you can wear it with baby in a sling and it covers baby with an extra layer too like the one @Tootle10 mentions

Oohparcel · 27/09/2020 14:05

I had one of these extenders which I wore with my big uniqlo puffa coat when carrying baby in a sling www.makemybellyfit.com and it was really good. But I live somewhere where you need a big coat for a lot of the year.
