Flu jab while pregnant. Yay or nay?

Been invited for one. Not sure whether to go for it. I wouldn't usually.

Yes, it gives antibodies to the baby for their first few weeks and could save their life. Likewise whooping cough. It’s not about you but your baby.

EmilySpinach · 17/09/2020 19:10

No question. Flu can kill in pregnancy.

Dontcarewhatmyusernameis · 17/09/2020 19:12

Yes. You’re vulnerable to complications if you catch flu when pregnant.

FlowerTink · 17/09/2020 19:12

Yes. Very important for you and baby.

Also get the whooping cough vaccine that's offered to you too.

Lilybet1980 · 17/09/2020 19:13

Well presumably you’re not usually pregnant?

Your doctor or midwife should have explained how important it is. It’s not just about protecting you individually but also helping to ensure you don’t get flu once the baby is born as you would almost certainly pass it onto them and it can be very serious in small babies.

ChelseaCat · 17/09/2020 19:13

100% yes. What are you worried about OP?

Sidge · 17/09/2020 19:15

Why wouldn’t you?

Oriflamme · 17/09/2020 19:17

100% yea.

Possibly also "yay" when considering the wonders that are vaccinations.

motherofdxughters · 17/09/2020 19:17

100% yes. Flu can kill, especially in pregnancy and infants. This gives valuable antibodies to both yourself and your child.

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/09/2020 19:18

yes

SillyCow6 · 17/09/2020 19:18

Yes!!

1990shopefulftm · 17/09/2020 19:18

had mine done yesterday, all I have is a stiff arm after I slept on that side last night. I'm asthmatic so it's keeping us both safe having had it.

MillieEpple · 17/09/2020 19:21

Yes.

Bumbers · 17/09/2020 19:24

Obviously yes. I am pregnant and am going tomorrow.

PrimeraVez · 17/09/2020 19:24

Yes. Always have one anyway but made especially sure to get it done nice and early in the flu season when I was pregnant.

IamC · 17/09/2020 19:25

That's resounding then.

I knew I was recommended to get whooping cough (next week) but wasn't sure if the flu jab was a standard pregnancy thing or if more people are being offered it due to covid.

OP posts:
DisgruntledPelican · 17/09/2020 19:30

Yes. Flu is grim, being pregnant is frequently grim, both together would be awful. Plus the protection it gives to the baby. They did mine at the same time as the whooping cough one.

ChalkDinosaur · 17/09/2020 19:33

Yes! Flu jab is a standard offering in pregnancy because you're more vulnerable to complications. GP surgeries etc seem to be very prompt with offering them this year, that's the only real covid-related difference.

Thistle95 · 17/09/2020 19:43

I would 100% get it - I got mine at the end of last season (March) and I'm now currently 39+5 and have had the cold the past few days.. my DP is already over his symptoms meanwhile mine is still persisting. Go for it as it also passes antibodies onto your baby.

Shawla92 · 17/09/2020 20:08

I went for my Whooping cough on Monday and just had flu done at the same time :) the nurse explained that the flu hab was vital due to our immune systems being weaker during pregnancy. 2 slightly dead arms for the night but all back to normal the next day! Aldo take your MAT notes with you so they can record the vaccine code in your book... I didnt take mine and had to bring the boxes home with me!

Summerrp · 17/09/2020 20:16

I'm getting the whooping cough however decided against the flu jab.

I work in a nursing home and year after year I see those who have the jab become very sick after it and often leads to them passing away. Just a personal choice for me not to have it. I know many won't agree.

Elouera · 17/09/2020 20:19

Yes, flu vaccine is a regular vaccine in pregnancy- even prior to covid. At most you might get a sore arm for a day. Why wouldnt you have it???

avidteadrinker · 17/09/2020 20:30

Yes definitely get it, I had the jab while pregnant and my husband had horrendous flu which kept him bed ridden for a week - I was so thankful that I didn’t get it too!
