When did you transition toddler to a bed?

As the question describes, I'm curious when people ditched the cot and put little one into their own bed?

17 months

2 and a half. She never even attempted to climb out the cot but she was starting to look a bit squished so we switched to a single bed.

SqidgeBum · 16/09/2020 11:23

We have just put our 21 month old into hers last week. We are due DD2 in 6 weeks so wanted her in her new bed in her new room before the baby arrives. I put her cot mattress beside it in case she falls out, and she prefers to sleep on that. We woke up on the first morning to find her asleep on the floor in the middle of the room 🤣🤣 however, she hasn't kicked up any fuss. It's been much easier than I anticipated.

Pootles34 · 16/09/2020 11:29

At 3.5 Blush it's a huge cot bed, so he wasn't squished. Much easier than i thought - just put thick blankets on the floor the first few nights - they will fall out!

cptartapp · 16/09/2020 11:40

20 months. We made a big deal of letting them play on it, but silly as it seems, didn't let them climb off themselves/lifted them down, so they learnt not to climb out at night too!
It worked.

Pinkflipflop85 · 16/09/2020 11:41

As soon as he worked out how to climb over the top at about 18 months old.

ODFOx · 16/09/2020 15:51

With both of mine I took the cot sides off as soon as they learnt to climb out. One was about 10 months (monkey!) but the other was much later, about 16 months I think.

CoffeeandKitKat · 16/09/2020 15:58
  1. Wasn't in a rush.

Put a bed guard on and he was a bit of a pain for a month or so getting up too early but the novelty wore off eventually, thankfully.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 16/09/2020 19:10

A couple of months before he turned 3. He was happy in his cot and didn’t try to climb out so there was no rush. However No II is on the way and, while we didn’t need the cot for a while as baby with go into a Next2Me, we thought it was good to get the bed move out of the way so less changes when baby comes. Also he started being dry overnight and we wanted him to be able to access the potty. It’s gone really, both staying in his bed and keeping dry.

FirstTimeBumps · 16/09/2020 19:16

15 months as he was climbing out. It was a cot bed and I didn't even get to use the bed bit as he would stand up and run off the edge in the middle of the night, faceplanting the floor 🤦‍♀️ but it doesn't mean we can use it for the baby now

onemouseplace · 16/09/2020 19:20

Over 3 - we had a cotbed with a drop side so it wasn't too much of a faff lifting even when I was heavily pregnant.

Babdoc · 16/09/2020 19:24

15 months, as I was 8 months pregnant and needed to free the cot for the new arrival!
We started DD off with a mattress on the floor, so there was no risk of falling out. We called it her “big girl’s bed”, said that cots were just for babies, then put all her teddies on it and let her play on it for an hour in the afternoon to get used to it. She was thrilled and didn’t want to leave it.

NickMarlow · 16/09/2020 19:29

26 months with both of them. DD1 was a terrible sleeper and refused to go back in her cot in the night but would resettle on the bed in her room, so we moved her over. She didnt realise she could get out of bed for over a year! DD2 has just broken the side off her cot and moved into a bed. Keeping her in it is a challenge, she's much more of an explorer than her sister...!

LolaLollypop · 16/09/2020 19:31

DD is just turned 3 and still in her cot! I never thought I would be the sort of mum to not push the progression but the last 6 months have been such turmoil, it’s been a lifesaver being able to put her in her cot and she can’t get out! (I haven’t locked her in but you know what I mean!) DS was born in February so those precious extra minutes where she lays in her cot before calling out for me are well worth it! She’s happy there and never tries to climb out so I’m not in a rush to change. We should hopefully be moving into a house soon so she’ll get a new big bed then.

notso · 16/09/2020 19:35

DC1 was 14 months and had a single bed and a cot in her room. One night she asked to sleep in the bed and never went back on the cot.
My other three were somewhere between 2 and 3.

Minimumstandard · 16/09/2020 19:58

2.7 here and still in a cot Blush... DS has never attempted to climb out, seems to like the security of the cot sides and it's bliss to know there will be no "visits" by little people during the night. We're in no hurry to make the transition. It's a huge cot bed, though, so plenty of room.

NatalieH2220 · 16/09/2020 20:05

We switched at 2.5. He isn't a climber so never had that issue. Put a gate across the door to avoid any issues during the night but he rarely gets out once in so was a lot smoother than expected!

Miraculous · 16/09/2020 20:07

My first 2 were 20 months. No issues, they didn’t climb out but both said they wanted proper beds!
DC3 is 20 months now and no way I’m moving him for a while yet. He’s feral.

Lalanbaba · 16/09/2020 20:16

Couple of weeks ago at 22 months. She loved it!
Hasn't fell off it but has went to sleep on the floor a couple of times

PolarBearStrength · 17/09/2020 14:01

Just turned 2 year old DS is still in his cot. He’s not a climber (in fact he appears to be fairly terrified of heights) so I have no worries about him diving out and hurting himself. He slept on a floor bed in our bedroom for one night a couple of months ago due to the temperature in his room and he must have rolled off 8 times and was furious each time so I’m not desperate to try the bed! His sister is also due in about 6 weeks and I feel like trying to change something like that now might be a step too far.

emmaluggs · 17/09/2020 14:04

My LO in 3 in a few weeks and just taken the sides down last week, he never tried to climb or anything we just felt it was the right time. All gone well so far.

BlusteryShowers · 17/09/2020 14:25

About 2y 4mo. We just took the side off the cot to make it a cot bed. He's now gone into a mid sleeper during lockdown when my daughter was born.

The anticipation of the transition was much worse than the reality. He's usually into everything and I assumed he would just trash his room every night but he did really well, and hardly ever gets up once we've put him to bed now.

Lazypuppy · 17/09/2020 14:28

2.5yo we changed her cot bed into the bed. I was struggling to lower her into the cot so thpught she was probably getting a bit big!

Stair gate on her bedroom door though to keep her in!

FolkSongSweet · 17/09/2020 16:56

2 years 3 months. He never tried to climb out, but was in a sleeping bag so it would have been tricky! We took the side off his cot and he’s been absolutely fine - doesn’t get out once he’s in it. He’s still got plenty of room in there so will prob leave him in it until his baby sister needs the cot, which will be when he’s about 3 (she’ll be in a next2me til then).

MinaMurray · 17/09/2020 17:17

Between 18 months and 2 yrs.

One of my DC tried to climb out of the cot at about 20 months and fell off the top. Fortunately he wasn’t hurt, but that was his last night in a cot.
