I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thethreebears Welcome. Sorry about your MC's. I had one and worried all the time. The chances are greatly in your favour all will be well. It usually takes a couple of days for Cyclizine to work. If it doesn't help, do ask for another anti emetic as there are several safe ones. You need a sick note, as realistically, few sufferers can keep working during the early weeks of this scourge. Are you a teacher, if this is your first LO? Running up and down two flights of stairs to the loo sounds horrendous. Can you get a sick note? Here is my normal spiel and recommended drinks, with Missingcoffeeandwine's tip about frozen Lucoazade sport added. You have already had great advice: here is my normal spiel in case it is any use. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits. Someone recommended a wonderful drink, recently, which I said I would add to the list and - stupid Mother Hen! - I've lost the reference!
Dimpous and MissingCoffeeandWine Welcome. As you are veterans, you don't need my spiel about 'have you got kesostix, as while not the best test of dehydration, hospitals do take them seriously' and 'do you find flat full sugar coke, ice lollies and fruit juice any good' and 'a good anti acid can make all the difference'. Dimpous I am glad you may have avoided hospital. I'll add your due date. MissingCoffeandWine I so agree about ice lollies. Some do avoid suffering as badly in the second pregnancy, perhaps because they are more prepared and get meds earlier.
Semele5069 I am so glad that the manager is understanding. Can you get a lengthier sick note? Do ask for other meds,as there are various ones and combinations they can try.
Seeker2020 Excellent advice.
Anya212 I meant to say, it is upsetting about your LO, who will be a little anxious, but remember that she will forget all about this time of your being ill in no time, being so little.

I work in an office in a very old building with soooo many stairs ! I have a little boy who will be 7 in November, he is a little treasure and has been so worried about me but now he knows mummy is growing a baby he’s happy that I’m not poorly ! Thanks for all the tips I’ve seen on here, glad I’ve joined the post 😃

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 23/09/2020 20:53

I'm going on holiday on Saturday and today stocked up on dehydration sachets, travel sick bands, ginger tablets. I know none of this worked last time but I would crawl across glass if someone advised it might work! Only vomited once so far and surviving on mash to keep the nausea noise down a bit. It's like a constant loud hum but sometimes it's a brass band.
Discovered raspberry lucozade sport today on offer in home bargains. It's very sweet but I'm coping with it ok and the energy boost helps.
My estimated due date is 20th May, I have a reassurance scan booked in 2 weeks due to 3 previous MCs.

Anyat212 · 24/09/2020 07:40

Sorry for the late reply - I managed the office, I've been going to bed as soon as I'm home though. With the advice of working from home changing it's unlikely I'll be back in unless really needed. I have my first scan this morning too at 13.5 weeks!

@Doughnut100 great tip on the tubberwear I will be doing that all the time now. Luckily I've not been sick in a bag but do remember in my first pregnancy how awful it is carrying that around. You must be really suffering if you have Diarrhoea as well, I do feel for you. How are you managing fluids? I know when I was at the height of my sickness if annoyed me when I was sick especially throwing up the water I'd managed to drink. I go the way other though, I suffered badly with constipation so not sure what you can take for diarrhoea.

@Funkypolar thank you. I'm the same I've barely left the house, it's horrible isn't it. If the meds aren't working I'd speak to your GP / midwife about others. I found the Prochlorperazine didn't work alone for me either. So maybe a combination will work? I'm not taking that one at the moment unless I'm having a really bad day so I'm just on the two meds.

@doritodiva that's a shame about the non drowsy meds. I would have assumed they'd be able to prescribe non drowsy ones for that very reason of driving. How long have you been taking the medication for? I'm just thinking Cyclizine made me very drowsy at first but it did get better.

lucinda thank you. I'm so glad it's manageable anyway and yes DD must be anxious bless her. It's probably the noises what I'm making too which alarm her. She's only 17 months anyway. She does give me a cuddles afterwards which of course makes me cry haha. I've felt so emotional this pregnancy I'm always bloody crying lately. Please could you add my due date to the list it's 28th March

Sending hugs to you all

Sunflowers28 · 24/09/2020 14:34

Hi all, please can I join? I'm 11 weeks now and really struggling with the constant nausea and sickness. I've been taking cyclizine for 2 days but it hasn't made a difference yet. The only thing that helps is lying down for as long as possible which is hard with a toddler.

It really helps to know there are people who understand and wont tell me to eat a gingernut!

Seeker2020 · 24/09/2020 16:59

Welcome @Sunflowers28- but so sorry you are experiencing HG. x

LucindaE · 24/09/2020 18:53

Sunflower28 Welcome. If Cyclizine doesn't help soon, do ask for other meds. Have you got family and friends who can help? It must be so tought with a toddler. Here is my normal spiel in case it is any use. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Thethreebears Ah, I see; that sounds dismal and I hope you can get a sick note. It must be worrying for LO's, but they seem to forget easily once this time is past.
Sweetpeamarigold I've added that drink. Good luck with the holiday.
I am sorry about the three mc's. While the chances remain very much on your side, it must make things very stressful.
Anya212 It's good you can work from home.
I'll add your date and Sweetpeamarigold's.
Waves to Doughnut100, Funkypolar, Seeker2020 and everyone.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

@Sunflowers28

Welcome and congratulations! I do feel for you I have a toddler too. It generally does take a few days for the meds to get into your system but if they are having no effect, it may be worth speaking to your GP again. You may need a combination of meds to ease the symptoms off. Cyclizine can be taken with many, different and safe medications and I think most of us on here have Cyclizine as one of our combos. I'm not sure about anyone else on here but my experience is that I've had to mention about the combinations to the doctors I've spoken to. They ovbs knew what meds to pre scribe for me, but they only prescribed more than 1 as I've said I need something along side it / these tablets aren't strong enough. Unfortunately many are set in their ways of prescribing only the minimum of meds which is frustrating. The midwives in the hospital when I was admitted were fab on the combination and advice generally around medications.

I did have to laugh at your ginger bread comment though, it's funny because it's so bloody true! I'm sure you'll hear it from more doctors as well. If I'm honest I wish ginger was this magical, AMAZING cure everyone talks about. It would be very much appreciated wouldn't it!

Lucinda hope you have a nice few days away!

My scan went fine today I must have been nervous though as I've been sick / had brutal nausea most of the day. I'm feeling better now but the little one was just chilling in there. I even got a little wave!

Hoping everyone is coping today x

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 26/09/2020 10:35

Morning everyone.

Sorry for have been missing for a while. My eldest daughter has been really unwell and we were in hospital for a while. Recovery is slow going and I just dropped off things like this.

HG update- I'm now 32 weeks, and having had a really reasonable time weeks 24 onward I'm back to lots of being sick. Not a total surprise as I was sick in the 3rd trimester with my other 2 as well, but still a bit disappointed as generally speaking the HG has not been as bad as the last 2 times. Ah well. Home straight I suppose?

Hope everyone is doing ok, sorry to see so many new names and therefore people suffering. Hang on in there. X

Lemondrop99 · 26/09/2020 18:37

Just dropping by to say a quick hi. I popped back during my early days to say I was pregnant but haven’t really been back on since. Frankly, I’ve just been busy trying to survive day to day life! Lockdown was hellish. I was bedbound, our nursery closed so toddler home full time and poor husband trying to work from home, care for toddler and look after me too. I ended up signed off until 20 weeks. Toddler didn’t react well to me being in bed all the time and we had months of clingy behaviour and tantrums.

Then I’ve been back at work (from home), even with a reduced workload and supportive manager, productivity has been low! I’m 34 weeks now and relieved to have recently finished work. I’m on the home stretch and can’t wait to come out the other side of this and never, ever do it again!

Anyway, I’m sorry I haven’t been more supportive on the thread. I had a lot more time on my hands last time. This time, just trying to juggle work, toddler and stay vertical has consumed all my energy! I expect most of you won’t know who I am but Lucinda and Shirley might remember me from the first time around. Just wanted to poke my head in and say I haven’t forgotten you!

Lemondrop99 · 26/09/2020 18:42

Sorry your daughter has been unwell Shirley Sad I hope she’s feeling better now. My sickness has been back with a vengeance in the third trimester too. Sigh. Nearly there!

Pumpertrumper · 26/09/2020 19:03

Ladies I’m shitting myself.
After a chemical pregnancy (not exactly planned) last month DH has decided he’s desperate for a second (I am too but honestly my HG the first time was enough to put me off for life).

Long story short we’ve had the ‘conversation’ and agreed we’ll try again. I’m ovulating now (according to the cheap strip tests) and it’s all systems go (if you know what I mean Grin) currently putting 6 month old DS to bed and sat sat here feeding him wondering WTF I’m playing at even considering doing that again? It was hell. I swore I’d rather swim naked in a pool full of razor blades and lemon juice than ever do it again but here I am.

Tell me I’m not alone?? Are many of you second or third timers? Have any of you not had HG in other pregnancies? I want to believe it’s possible but I only realised and tested on the chemical pregnancy... because I was sick.

Semele5069 · 27/09/2020 12:41

Do any of you have days where the nausea isn't as bad? I keep scaring myself when I wake up feeling relatively ok!

Right now I feel sick by "normal" standards but because it isn't as bad as it sometimes has been recently I'm worried about loss of symptoms. I feel like I've lost all ability to judge how I feel!

Sunflowers28 · 27/09/2020 15:10

@LucindaE thanks so much for all the advice, really appreciate it!

@Anyat212 thank you that's really helpful to know about the medications. Have you found any strategies to manage looking after a toddler while you're so ill? I feel so guilty most of the time because I cant play with him like I used to, we just end up reading a lot of books!

Sunflowers28 · 27/09/2020 15:13

I had one day when I didn't feel so sick and then worried all day then the next day it was back to full on nausea and sickness. I think if it happens again I will try to just enjoy it rather than worry, but that's a lot easier said than done! Hope you are ok.

LucindaE · 27/09/2020 20:52

Back. Thanks Anya, it was a pleasant visit.
Welcome back to IAmSeriousAndDon'tCallMeShirley and Lemondrop. Sorry to hear that IAmSeriousAndDn'tCallMeShirley's daughter was ill in hospital. Sorry to hear that both you and Lemondrop are suffering in the tird tri and having to battle on. I don''t know how sufferers with other LO's cope, let alone going to work. You are indeed both on the home stretch. The Pink Castle is in view! Cheering you on.
PumperTrumper Lots of sufferers on here are on second or even third pregnancies. Very brave! I have always regretted only having one.
Semele As Sunflower says, many worry about a good day.
Sunflower I am sure that others who have actually suffered while looking after a toddler have advice. I have seen on all the threads how they soon forget a period of comparative neglect.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

OP posts:
Anyat212 · 28/09/2020 16:34

@Sunflowers28

I think the main things to remember are that this is temporary and don't feel guilty. Your LO is going to have a little brother or sister soon! I've cried a few times feeling terrible that I haven't been able to play with my toddler or even spend time with her etc. How old is your little one? I'm abit different now as I'm about 70% functioning as the meds have been effective, although the last few days haven't been great. I tend to find I'm better after tea time (approx an hour till I'm exhausted and ready for bed!) I'm the same I'll read her book or we just cuddle up and watch TV for a bit. I did manage to bath her Friday night but it's being careful not to over do it. I also bought a couple of new toys for her to keep her occupied as at the worst I couldn't even get off the sofa.

Do you have anyone who could watch your LO for abit? When you do feel so terrible the best thing you can do is rest up. Which I know is easy to say when you have a toddler!

LucindaE · 28/09/2020 20:42

Anya212 You are very stoic and I am sure that even now you are a great mother. Excellent advice for Sunflowers about LO's. Although, as I say, I didn't go for it again, I personally believe that you can't give a better present to a LO than a sibling.

OP posts:
Seeker2020 · 29/09/2020 10:04

Hi ladies, whilst the day-to-day has gotten better I'm still finding I feel terribly sick in the mornings (sometimes with an actual vomit).
I'm so in awe of you mums who do this more than once. If I get through this, I have to say I'll be stopping at one. Anyone else felt the same because of the HG?

coffeecow · 29/09/2020 11:54

Hi everyone, just checking in. I'm 10 weeks now and I think the sickness is definitely peaking. Had to call in sick to work today and I felt so awful. It's just so intense. I know this sounds awful but it just makes me wonder why I'm putting myself through this again, I'm so sad and miserable all the time with it. I'm never doing this again.

bunhead34 · 29/09/2020 12:37

@Seeker2020 my sickness is mostly being controlled now with meds.
But I feel the same as you about this being my first and only pregnancy! I can't do this again, especially with a toddler to look after.
I had Ivf too, so the whole getting pregnant/being pregnant has been quite the ordeal so far x

Bearcub01 · 29/09/2020 13:15

@Seeker2020 I feel exactly the same. There is no way I could ever go through this again, I don’t know how people manage to cope 2 and 3 times especially with other children to care for.
I’m 15 weeks today, I last posted at 7 weeks when I was really, really bad and admitted to hospital for a few days. I have good days and bad days now, the good days are ok and I manage to eat a bit more but I’m still bed or sofa bound. I don’t know how anyone manages to get up and go to work, I’m so weak I can’t manage more than 5 minutes on my feet! I start to feel better but the sickness always comes back and it’s awful, I feel like it’s never going to end. I’m hoping it’s going to stop soon, I really just want to be normal!
