I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@QwertyBert I will let you know hun! Honestly my midwife has been horrendous I literally have never had an experience so bad with a midwife! Just doesn’t want to seem to see or talk or even help me at all I hope you feel better soon! I’m running out of things to try but hopefully something helps I’ve been like this for nearly 15 weeks now it’s not nice hun xx

LucindaE · 20/09/2020 18:57

Charna92 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. I'm assuming they have tried Ondansetron and Cyclizine and an anti acid such as Omprazole? It is very hard on those with LO's. The good thing is that children are very resiliant. You have already had great advice: here is my normal spiel in case it is any use. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, and Robinson's fruit drinks. I'll add Beaopo's Rubicon sparkling mango drink. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits. Someone recommended a wonderful drink, recently, which I said I would add to the list and - stupid Mother Hen! - I've lost the reference!
ChubbyMumFromSkye Excellent advice. How are things?
QuertyBert I know that they used to define Hypermesis in a rigid way as involving a 10'% body weight loss, but might well have considered less than that unacceptable! Sorry you feel so bad.
Might liquid iron drops be more digestible?
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

@LucindaE

I haven't had the worst of weekends... Friday I was able to spend about 7/8 hours out of bed and felt like "yes this it it I'm turning a corner" then Saturday and today - bam! The nausea is back with a vengeance, although less bad yesterday 🥴

I hope it means it will start easing even if it is gradual, the weight is still going down but not at an alarming rate and I am managing enough fluids so I am not suffering as much as some who are vomiting as well as the nausea, and I am so grateful for that.

On Friday when I was having a good day I managed a baked potato for dinner and it was SO amazing to actually eat proper food!

Thank you for asking 😊 I hope you had a nice weekend? 💐

Charnaf92 · 20/09/2020 19:25

@LucindaE Thankyou I have tried pretty much everything I can think of drink or food wise literally at the end of my tether with it. It’s so hard! I’m going to ring my doctors again tomorrow because my midwife really is no help at all! Problem is if I have to go back into hospital which is likely I’m going to need to be discharged by school time and that’s the hard thing I have no one else to help and my partner works and can’t just swing it even for a few days it’s so hard :( xx

LucindaE · 21/09/2020 18:38

ChubbyMumFromSkye Very nice thank you. At least a good day is usually a sign of more to come. I am glad you enjoyed the baked potato.
Charnaf92 I hope you got some positive results from the phone call with the doctor. It is very hard on those with LO's. Sad

I hope everyone is doing ok. Sickness seems to have eased to once a day in a morning. I am managing to keep food down the rest of the time. However I am on stemitil and finding it hard to cope with the drowsiness. I'm at work everyday and can't even hold a conversation sometimes. I nap all the time when not at work or just sit on the sofa. Hard when I have a six year old! Anyone know of something that could help or another tablet which doesn't make me as drowsy? Thanks in advance.

Funkypolar · 21/09/2020 21:06

I’ve been signed off work again. So that’ll be 4 weeks.

I had a horrendous Friday night, vomited so much that there was blood and my throat was so painful. Ended up calling 111 and an out of hours GP rang me back and prescribed Prochlorperazine.

Managed to go to the dentist today, two areas of gum need a bit more care, because baby is making them inflamed. Then I was sick again when I got home. Lovely.

Anyat212 · 21/09/2020 22:17

@doritodiva

Are you on stemitil and not taking any others? I ask just incase it's another med which may be making you drowsy?

I'm taking Cyclizine, and metroclampide they don't make me drowsy. Could there be an option for non-drowsy stemitil? I have Prochlorperazine as well which I think is just a branded version of that and it doesn't make me drowsy. Appreciate it could vary to each person. Ondansetron never made me drowsy either, although think we all know the battle to get that med. Could be worth checking with pregnancy sickness to see which non drowsy meds they can recommend.

@Funkypolar

Sending you hugs there is nothing worse Sad I had issues in my last pregnancy with gums which seems to be re appearing again. So can also relate to that as well. I was signed off work most of my first pregnancy and felt so guilty. I hope you don't feel like that as sometimes all you can do to get better is rest.

I've been so quiet on here, still battling through the nausea and violent vomiting when it creeps up. But it's manageable. It got me the other day though, I couldn't make it to the toilet so ran to the kitchen sink and my LG just wants to see what's going on all the time. She was between my legs wanting me to pick her up and I just couldn't. I couldn't even find any words to reassure her. Luckily it passed fairly quickly but felt awful for her.

It's my first day back in the office tomorrow and I'm just praying I'm okay, I find it really nerve wracking leaving the house (mainly trips what aren't so close to home) still as I worry I'm going to have a bad turn / be sick. Will take the trusty sick bag with me in my car.

Hope everyone is coping x

Doughnut100 · 21/09/2020 22:33

@Anyat212 just a tip I've been doing - bring a tupperware box if you're worried about being sick when you go out, one with a really secure lid. It's disgusting to carry around of course but at least you're not stuck with a wet bag or having to throw up in the street. I'm the same I just dread having to leave the house as I don't know what awkward place I'll be in when I need to have diarrhoea or vomit. My nausea is always accompanied by diarrhoea I don't know if that's normal.

Funkypolar · 21/09/2020 22:42

@Anyat212 hello, I hope your first day back at work goes okay! Apart from going to the dentist, I haven’t left the house in weeks.

I thought the Prochlorperazine was helping but just been sick again, FFS!

doritodiva · 22/09/2020 07:10

@Anyat212 thank you yeah I have the proch one but can never spell it! It's really affecting me now. I had cyclizine last time and that made me drowsy. I just feel like I can't function day to day.

1potato · 22/09/2020 12:33

Hi everyone. Me again. I was last on here before the birth of my baby boy in Sept 2019. Now I'm pregnant again. Tears have been shed! I'm 7+2 and on cyclizine and prochloaperazine. The vomming is under control but is quickly out of control if I am late taking a tablet or don't get enough rest (which is most days with a 1 year old). I'm freelance so very anxious about the next few months as I don't receive sick pay.

Hope you're all well. I spy a few familiar names!

Seeker2020 · 22/09/2020 16:25

Sending so much strength to you all still dealing with the initial shock of HG. Try to stay strong, hydrated and kind on yourselves- this isn't a normal journey.

Of those of us a little further along, anyone else very uncomfortable with their increasing size and the effect of squishing on organs (mainly lungs) as they go along?

x

LucindaE · 22/09/2020 17:53

1Potato Welcome back. Congratulations on your first. As you are a veteran you don't need my 'do you find flat full sugar coke, ice lollies and the juice of tinned fruit any good' and 'have you got kesostix as while not the best test of dehydration hospitals do take the measurements seriously' and 'a good anti acid makes a big difference' spiel. I am glad they have got you on meds early, anyway.
Funkypolar Sorry to hear of your suffering badly and the blood from your throat. That can look alarming. I am glad you were able to get a dental appointment.
Anya212 I am glad that things are very slightly more manageable overall. You always give great advice.
Doughnut100 That's a really good idea about the tupperware bowl!
How come I only ever thought of plastic bags?

Seeker2020 I remember the squashed organs, and also, really painful ribs, even after all this time.
doritadiva Most sufferers seem to complain of Cyclizine rather than Stemitil being sophorophic (if that's the word), but as Anya says, we're all affected differntly by meds. Would the doctor be willing to prescribe somehting else?
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

@LucindaE thank you. When I spoke to dr he said most of the anti sickness tabs make you drowsy. It's driving to and from work I'm worried about. Apart from asking to be signed off I don't know what else I can do. Thank you for your reply.

LucindaE · 22/09/2020 21:42

doritodiva That is a pest. I think that people who are made sleepy by the Cyclizine generally say that they are less sleepy after some days - so hopefully, the same applies to Stemitil?

Semele5069 · 23/09/2020 10:32

Hi all
Still feeling vile here! I mostly stopped taking the cyclizine as it was knocking me out so not much better work wise than the nausea.

I'm meant to be delivering a big training event in work today and tomorrow but instead am home in bed- I've been getting so worried about it so cracked and told my manager on Monday and she's been amazing! I still fully expected to do the training until yesterday and was trying to prep for it, then last minute big boss got in touch to say she had found someone to cover for me and just to take the week off.

I didn't realise how worried about it I'd been till then and had a bit of a cry due to the relief and how crap I feel!

Semele5069 · 23/09/2020 10:34

Forgot to say, I got these ginger supplements at the weekend and they do seem to help a bit. I take one in the morning and one mid afternoon.

Hi all, long time lurker on the HG threads but first time poster. I am 11weeks with my second DC, due date around 13/4/21 had HG in my first pregnancy but my god it has ramped up this time! Sad
I started on Prochlorperazine which did nothing, then onto Metoclopramide which helped lessen the frequency of sickness but gave me a terribly upset stomach. I was then admitted for IV fluids and meds and discharged on the Metoclopramide and Xnova at night. I'm now trying Cyclizine which didn't help with my first DC but is helping take the edge off but after a terrible night of dry heaving and throwing up just bile for an hour this morning I am exhausted and feeling another hospital trip is on the cards. I am so dehydrated and just don't think I can drink my way out of it today. I spent 6hrs at A&E a couple of weeks ago before I finally got fluids so I am waiting a call back from GP to hopefully be sent straight to ward.
I am exhausted, depleted and just so done with this! I've been signed off work for the first time in my life thank god because I am literally in survival mode.

You are all amazing let's hope these little ones are cute eh!

Any tips on handling the morning onslaught before I can get the meds in me!

Well done if you reached the end of this essay!

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 23/09/2020 11:26

@Dimpous hope you get what you need and quickly, that dehydrated exhaustion is just unbearable, I remember it well.

MissingCoffeeandWine · 23/09/2020 12:34

Hi all, cautiously checking in. I’m 5 ish weeks. Had HG with my little girl (Dec 19), and currently regretting the decaf coffee I just chose (as I swallow hard) and remembering just how much I used to vom (7-20 times a day, from early-22 weeks, than a few times a week, ramped back up at 36). Wondering why on earth I thought going again was possibly a good thing 🤣🙈😫

Going to buy lucocade sport, and freeze it, as it’s what kept me from hospital last time (I could eat it with a soon). Ice Lollys also helped. Any chance anyone’s had a better second pregnancy than before?

Ps. I’m sorry you’re all experiencing HG. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. It’s horrid. Hope you can find tricks that help you survive x

Seeker2020 · 23/09/2020 13:59

@Dimpous- as hard as it can be, I found having something- even the tiniest bit of food- before knocking back the meds helped. Pills and empty stomach do not a happy combination make. If I hadn't eaten anything (usually just one half of a bagel thin) then the pill came back up.....putting me right back to square one.

So sorry you're experiencing this. x

Thethreebears80 · 23/09/2020 15:40

Hi everyone,

First time posting 😄

I’m 14 weeks pregnant -yippee! I have been suffering with morning sickness since week 6. It’s just been diagnosed today as HG and I’ve been prescribed cyclizine. I’m currently lay in bed feeling so drowsy (with a very dry mouth!) but sick still 🤢 can anyone tell me how long it takes for these to kick in?

Abit of history I’ve had 2 miscarriages previous to this pregnancy one at 9 weeks last June and one at 6.5 weeks in January this year, as you can imagine It’s an anxious time as I just want everything to be ok

I didn’t want to take anything during pregnancy.. but who does ! Yesterday I was sick 8 times just while I was at work, running up and down 2 flights of stairs to the loo. I currently can’t drive as even that makes me sick - throwing up in an Avon bag Parked outside school was not my finest Moment 😂

Dimpous · 23/09/2020 17:15

Thanks @SweetpeaOrMarigold I have spoken to GP and after a lot of hard work concentrating on fluids today I think I have dodged the hospital visit depending how tonight goes. GP had prescribed Omeprazole to help with the gas/dry heaving at night and another tablet to protect the lining of my stomach along with trialing metoclopramide with the cyclizine. Fingers and toes crossed for a better night tonight!

@Seeker2020 thanks, I try so hard with this but it's so hard isn't it, I hadn't thought or a bagel may give that a go. Smile

Dimpous · 23/09/2020 17:20

@Thethreebears80 congratulations on your pregnancy so sorry to hear after all your heartache you are experiencing HG. I usually find the medication takes 24hrs or so in my system but some feel relief sooner. Fingers crossed for you.

To make you feel better about the Avon bag my finest moment was an empty pombear packet at the park. Blush
