I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@blueskiesandapples Really don’t worry about the weight thing unless you are becoming underweight or already are? My anomaly scan is in under 3 weeks and just had a private scan at 16+4 and they are thriving. “Extremely active” in fact! So sounds like they’re having a great time whereas I am not 🤣 I’m still losing weight (albeit more slowly now). BMI still in healthy range so not gonna worry until it’s not.

Seeker2020 · 09/09/2020 17:22

@DeadDoorpost What a little cutie! Thank you for sharing this comfort :)

Beapo · 09/09/2020 22:12

Hey all, just checking in. Cyclizine isn’t really making a difference for me and my GP gave me some alternatives, just wondered what people would recommend the most? She did mention there are potential risks with at least one, something about cleft palettes. The ones she mentioned are metaclopramide, ondansetron, and promethazine. I’m about 6-7 weeks but not really sure for definite.

On a more amusing note, someone at my GP surgery can’t spell HG 🤣

So I got Ondansetron yesterday, I did feel a bit better last night and manage to eat some dinner.
Today I feel so ill, I'm feel
Sick to my stomach although have only thrown up once.

I honestly
Don't know what I'm supposed to do now

Seeker2020 · 10/09/2020 17:20

@bunhead34 I know it feels like there is no hope but it does get better. I won't promise the sickness will disappear completely as everyone is different, but please don't feel hopeless. Take each day as it comes and in no time you will be counting down the weeks instead of the minutes.
Give the Ondansetron time to work (for me it stopped the vomiting but I still felt nauseous) though this was helpful enough to be able to keep food and water down. We're all in this together xxx

2019canfoff · 10/09/2020 17:28

I had HG from week 5 until c-section at 39 weeks, the only thing that worked was Ranitidine it helped keep the food down but didn't help nausea. Sending hugs for everyone experiencing this, I still have nightmares about it but it stopped as soon as DS arrived xx

ChubbyMumFromSkye · 10/09/2020 20:20

@bunhead34 I feel you, I am really struggling too every day - I am not vomiting but the nausea is hell on earth.
I have no advice other than to rest as much as you can, sip flat fizzy drinks and if you are still working either get a sick line or ask your work to put you on furlough until it ends at end of October and see how you are then. X

Beapo · 10/09/2020 20:20

Hey guys, had a scan today, I’m 8 weeks already which I didn’t even realise, everything normal inside thankfully, apart from the nightmare that is HG. Had to have an internal ultrasound because no full bladder due to not being able to drink much at the moment cos of HG, nurse did recommend letting full sugar coke going flat and drinking that to give an energy boost if you’re feeling low, I’ve started having one or two cans a day of it but not flat as I’m not a big fan of flat pop but might work for some.

@LucindaE they gave me a rough due date: 22nd April, could I be added to the list please? 😊

LucindaE · 10/09/2020 20:26

Thank you, DeadDoorPost for your lovely message of encouragement for others. What a lovely photo, too. So glad all is fine with your LO's. I remember you and your sufferings well. Didn't you also move in the middle of having Hyperemesis? I am so glad the thread helped you.
2019canfoff Thanks so much for your message of support.
bunhead34 I don't think I can improve on Seeker2020's message of support. Things will almost certainly get better. Try and take it an day at a time. It is very hard. Some GP's prescribe Cyclizine along with Ondansetron, plus a vitamin B vitamin I always forget - is it B12 - plus laxative and antiacid for maximum effect.
Beepo Ha, Ha, about that new word. It shows how ltitle known the condition is. There is a very small risk of cleft palate if Ondansetron is taken before week 9, I think - one in a thousand, something like that? As others say, a laxative is usually required with that one.
coffeecow I am so glad you got Acupunture thrown in! It helped me a lot but varies betweeen different people. I hope someone can advise you better about Promethazine than I could.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Beapo Added you. I so agree with that nurse about flat, full sugar coke. I always feature it top of the recommended drinks.

Wow lots of new people on here, sorry to read about all the suffering! I'm still okay with the three meds I'm on (I'm about 70%) and I've only been sick once this week! So there is a light at the end of tunnel guys I promise. I'm almost 12 weeks and this is the third week of the HG being controlled. I can't believe how quick I've got it controlled compared to my last pregnancy.

Doctor is trying to get me off metroclampide though apparently I can take that when "I'm really bad" which is when I don't rotate all three meds. So that will be an interesting conversation tomorrow. I've also managed work all week from home. I'm completely wiped at the end of the day and been in bed at 9am every night. I can't stop thinking about you ladies who are still going into work / commuting I don't know how you do it! I hope you don't move a muscle when your home and relax as much as possible!!

If anyone is struggling with constipation and you don't like laculose, movicol is good. Particularly with ondansetron. I personally find it more effective. I'd double check with the doctor how much you need as it differs to each person and they recommend half dosage in pregnancy too. You also need to ensure you drink plenty of water for both options as they work by drawing water into your bowel. So unfortunately can make constipation worse if you're unable to keep fluids down.

Sending you all hugs!

bunhead34 · 11/09/2020 11:33

Does anyone take stemetil and ondansetron together?

BB2021 · 11/09/2020 12:06

Hi everyone, I am due on 04/04/21 so I am currently at 10+5. I first started feeling nauseous at 5 weeks and started vomiting regularly at 7 weeks. At 8 weeks I was prescribed cyclizine but it only seemed to work for 4 days before I started vomiting again. I was then told by one doctor that I should continue taking cyclizine but also take a single ondansetron on particularly bad days, but not for more than 5 days in a row. My ondansetron prescription never arrived with the chemist so I had to speak to a 2nd doctor who told me to exclusively take ondansetron but she only gave me 5 days worth. I wasn't sure which advice to follow so I took the first doctor's advice, although I am trying my best not to take the ondansetron. I'm now at a stage where cyclizine just doesn't work so I'm considering switching exclusively to ondansetron but I don't know why they issue it in such small batches. It's very hard to get a doctor's appointment where I live and to have to do this every 5 days seems excessive. Does anyone have any advice they can offer about what my best course of action is? Should I push for a longer ondansetron prescription and ditch the cyclizine altogether?

bunhead34 · 11/09/2020 12:12

Hi @BB2021 sorry you are suffering with this too.
I got a tiny ondansetron prescription too this week. It is annoying!

If the cyclizine has stopped working I would maybe just take the ondansetron and see if that works on its own? Did the 2nd dr say 3 times a day or still one a day?

I'd kill to get a good dr right now, it takes an hour on to just speak to a receptionist at mine

BB2021 · 11/09/2020 12:16

@bunhead34 the second doctor said to take it 3 times a day. I think I'll just try that for a few days and then start my battle again for another appointment.

Apricotta · 11/09/2020 13:05

Eugh... I've been on cyclizine since Sat... Took two days to work and it now seems to be wearing off. I was feeling hopeful that it was under control. I have had a lot of stress this week, I'm hoping it will settle down over the weekend. Sucks massively doesn't it 😢 I've got two lessons to go.... Clinging onto not vomiting by my fingertips. I'm unable to eat much or drink because I feel too sick!!!

Helenknowsbest · 11/09/2020 17:45

Nearly 13 weeks pregnant with #2. Was trying to wean myself off ondonsetron today... did not work. Been throwing up all day long and struggling to look after toddler today. The past 6 weeks have been a bit of a blur. Off work, hospital trips, gp trips. Just really over it now

Beapo · 11/09/2020 19:05

It bloody sucks doesn’t it 😱 I’m still taking just cyclizine to give it a few more days to see if it helps at all but doesn’t feel like it. The main meal I’m struggling with each day more than the others is breakfast. I used to always have my morning coffee and a bowl of granola, but anything milky is making me want to throw up even more. One thing I found out today though by chance, might just be me but I got a little bottle of rubicon sparkling mango drink, and no words of a lie I took a mouthful and my tummy settled straight away. Didn’t last very long but long enough to drive home. I’ve sent my partner off to Asda to see if he can find any big bottles incase it wasn’t a fluke 🤣 It’s so bizarre how everyone is so different in what helps and doesn’t help. I’ve had cravings for Greggs sausage and bean melts, and it turns out they don’t make me feel sick when I eat them. I’m already overweight so don’t want to fill myself full of unhealthy pasties so trying to limit myself. Why can’t I crave something healthy, or be able to tolerate healthy foods 😱

LucindaE · 11/09/2020 20:17

BB2021 Welcome. Ten weeks is often the worst stage. I've added your date. You will find lots of support on here. I know that Ondansetron is expensive, but prescribing it in such small amounts is ridiculous. The GP is obviously playing safe, but do phone Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 about getting effective meds. They will phone back with good advice. Here is my usual spiel. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. Some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, and Robinson's fruit drinks. I'll add Beaopo's Rubicon sparkling mango drink. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels, slices of melon and mango, grated cheese, baked potatoes, grated cheese, bagels and biscuits. Someone recommended a wonderful drink, recently, which I said I would add to the list and - stupid Mother Hen! - I've lost the reference!
Helenknowsbest Welcome. As you a veteran, you don't need the above spiel about kesostix, drinks and anti acids etc. Don't try and cut down too quickly. Much sympathy about trying to look after a toddler. I hope you have some help from friends or family (in so far as it is possible with these varying rules about social groups).
Anya212 I am so glad the meds are helping you and I hope the doctor continues to prescribe them.
bunhead34 Stupid me. I wrote a message for you, and can't read my appalling handwriting.
Beapo Good ideas there.
Apricotta Sorry about stress. Do ask for something else if the meds aren't helping enough. It must be very hard to work through this.

@BB2021

I see what you mean about feeling that it's excessive calling the dr every 5 days! I don't think doctors realise the effort it takes to talk on the phone nevermind doing it every couple of days. I would really make it clear that you cannot continue like this and need a stronger med. You've given the cyclizine significant time to work and it's not. There is very small risk of taking Ondansetron that baby may develop a cleft lip. I took it in my first pregnancy 2 years ago from week 6/7/8 I can't remember the exact week and had it until my DD was born. I've noticed they are very hesitant to prescribe this medication now to women under 12 weeks and it's expensive too. Which is bloody annoying because it is really effective.

There are many meds out there that they can try you on. I'm on 3 myself as a combo. Speak to your doctor about combos or even your midwife. The midwifes actually sorted me out with how I should take my meds and I've been a lot better the last 3 weeks, so could worth speaking to them.

@Beapo re: meals I find it useful to eat parts of my meal, eg if you are having toast eat abit, leave to one side, eat abit more and continue. It takes longer but I'm not sick doing it that way and don't feel sick either. I'm sure your cravings will change! Mine have been crazy over the past four weeks and I went through a Gregs phase too haha. Thankfully I'm back on the pink lady apples!!

I'm currently laid out on the sofa and just know I'm going to be sick shortly! I was late taking meds today and it really does wipe me when this happens. Think an early night is on order for me.

LucindaE yeah, I moved twice in one pregnancy! Once at the beginning and once at the end, 2 weeks before I gave birth.

Fruitloops34 · 12/09/2020 07:53

Hi everyone

Joining in if that’s okay. I’m due May 5th.

I’m 6+3 as of today and have an early scan this afternoon just for some reassurance.

I’ve had horrendous nausea now since 5+3, literally from the minute I open my eyes to the minute I go to sleep. So badly that all I’ve done is cry to my partner(luckily I’m in a same sex marriage so having another women to moan to seems to help)

Yesterday was especially bad and I did say that if I’d known how bad I was going to feel I really think I would have had second thoughts about becoming pregnant. I was totally naive to just how bad I was going to feel. I read another thread on here and a lady said it was like having a constant hangover and that is exactly what I feel like.

I do think I could deal with the sore breasts, the tiredness and everything except the nausea, it’s just on another level.

I’ve found making a sandwich(mostly egg) and eating a few bites every few hours makes me feel better. Fruit pastilles Ice lollies and full fat Ribena have been godsends.
I’ve craved McDonald’s double cheeseburgers every few days as well, typical it’s nothing healthy.

Hope everyone who is suffering has a good a day as they possible can!

PhotoMum4 · 12/09/2020 08:56

Haven’t posted for a while as been back at work.
Can I be added to the list EDD is 18th March. On Ondanstron and Cyclizine which has reduced the vomit but not really changed the constant nausea.

After first full week back at school juggling teaching and being sick I am exhausted.
Before my class arrived yesterday I really did feel “I can’t do this”, then they arrived and auto pilot engaged and I got through the day, with only 2 bathroom dashes to be sick.

When I eventually got home this evening at 6.30, I was so exhausted. I got my son ready for bed and my husband took over and did bedtime. He has been really great but I feel bad about being so useless at home.

I burst into tears earlier, complete sobbing unable to stop tears, I just want one day where I don’t feel nauseous all the time, where I don’t have to worry about being sick at work, where I can walk into a room without worrying the smell of someone’s lunch, the air freshener, someone’s perfume is going to make me sick.
My husband came in and asked what was wrong, I explained and he gave me a hug, but then he started coming up with solutions/ideas to speak to work about to make things easier. As much as this is helpful, in that moment all I wanted was a hug and to be told “you are doing okay” it wasn’t the time for ideas as it just made me feel like I’m over reacting, and shouldn’t be complaining. I feel I’m doing a rubbish job of everything.

Funny thing is when I came upstairs I went through the notes on my phone and I have an almost identical story written from when I was 3 months pregnant with my son.

Knowing I’m not likely to be getting any relief from this sickness for a good while yet, is hard. I am so grateful for this baby, especially after the MMC, but I just wish I didn’t feel so so ill with it.

PhotoMum4 · 12/09/2020 08:57

Also sorry to hear of everyone who is suffering, it’s so hard. This group makes such a difference knowing other people are feeling rough as I am and I’m not just being a wimp/over exaggerating.
