Alarmed by weight gain

I’m 22 weeks and I’ve gained over 3 stone. This is a bit much, isn’t it?

Is it possible to safely bring it down? I have been eating better and moving a lot more than I was.

I think some of it depends on how heavy you were before pregnancy. Generally the lighter you were the more weight you should gain. Speak to your midwife if you're worried.

Skyliner001 · 08/08/2020 18:37

😱😱

Mc3209 · 08/08/2020 20:23

I am currently 28 weeks, went from 52kg pre pregnancy to 65kg now. Most of it was in the second trimester, and weight gain wasn't linear, it came in jumps. I am eating healthier now and trying to exercise to keep it somehow under control. I wouldn't start any weight loss programs without speaking to your midwife first.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/08/2020 20:25

That’s a lot considering lost weight is put on in the final trimester. What weight were you before becoming pregnant?
I wouldn’t diet just ensuring you’re eating well.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/08/2020 20:25

*most weight

Sairafina · 08/08/2020 21:13

There's no nice way to say this really but it does seem like a lot for 22 weeks 😬
How would you describe your diet so far? Would you say you've been using pregnancy as an excuse to have more calorie dense/sugary/processed foods?

lockdownpregnancy · 08/08/2020 22:40

33 weeks and 3 1/2 stone heavier! I'm all bump for the most part, though bum and hips have increased in size, though I've only gone up to a size 12! I think as long as you had a healthy BMI to begin with you'll be fine 👍🏻

Gerdticker · 08/08/2020 22:50

@candyflossatthefair what was your BMI before pregnancy? That makes a difference. If it was low, it’s expected that you’ll gain more weight than someone with a high BMI for example.

It does sound a fair bit though, do you feel like your diet and activity levels have changed a lot?

May be worth speaking to your midwife about it x

SassyPants87 · 08/08/2020 22:52

I would speak to the midwife about it as that's quite a bit of a gain! (Sorry!)

Rainy88 · 08/08/2020 22:54

I agree, it's quite a bit, can you think of any obvious reason? I know a lot of people have put on excess lockdown weight..

badg3r · 08/08/2020 22:56

It is a lot, I would speak to your midwife. However, I would also add that during my third pregnancy just now I feel that weight gain has been more than previous two and it is definitely a side effect of lockdown and WFH.

waitingforachange · 08/08/2020 22:57

I gained a lot of weight in my second pregnancy and it complete ruined my post pregnancy body for ever. I really wish I had moderated more as the damage is un-doable now. I gained a normal amount in my first pregnancy and bounced back really quickly.

chubbyhotchoc · 09/08/2020 08:00

@candyflossatthefair it really depends what weight you were to begin with. My bmi was just I go the overweight category so I really need to gain only 25lbs tops but I'm 24 weeks and have gained 16lbs ish. I can see how 3 stone is possible and probably easy to gain though as I've tried to be really sensible. If I was actually eating as much as I wanted I'd have easily doubled it.

passthemustard · 09/08/2020 08:02

Ok so I'm 20 weeks and Ive gained 5lbs so far 😳 so 3 stone seems excessive.

chubbyhotchoc · 09/08/2020 08:09

@passthemustard I don't think it's surprising. People have gained a stone in lock down without being pregnant. She might have had sickness that needed constant carbs to keep at bay.

hjtip10 · 09/08/2020 08:17

@aureliacecilia That is completely false and you shouldn't be giving out advice like that!

NHS recommend a woman should aim to gain no more than 26Lbs! And most of the weight would be gained after 20 weeks... otherwise your risking complications such as gestation diabetes! Which I had because I gained 3 stone... because of that I obviously had to stop eating carbs and sugar and I lost 2 Lbs a week until around 36 weeks when I stayed the same!

Eat as much veg and protein as you can try and reduce sugar and carbs! You can still eat enough and lose weight if you stay active as long as you don't do any silly diet you are fine!!

I was more sensible with my second and didn't get diabetes! So it isn't false information they give out x

aureliacecilia · 09/08/2020 08:58

@hjtip10 I was basing my comment on what I had read on the Tommy's website: www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/im-pregnant/weight-management/how-much-weight-should-i-gain-pregnancy

It does not appear the NHS has any guidelines about this: www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/how-much-weight-will-i-put-on-during-my-pregnancy/

Thank you for your feedback.

rottiemum88 · 09/08/2020 09:11

Sorry OP, yes that is a lot. I gained 3.5 stone in total by the time I gave birth at 41+2 and the midwife said even that was on the higher end of normal 😬 Maybe speak to your midwife if you're concerned? A friend of mine who was pregnant at the same time as me developed a condition which caused horrendous water retention, so she seemed to gain a huge amount of weight quite quickly, but was monitored carefully and it all went away once baby was born. She was pretty much bedridden towards the end though.

When you say you've been eating better, how much are you eating exactly? You shouldn't need much more in terms of calories at your stage of pregnancy than you would if you weren't pregnant; is it possible you're eating healthily, but your portions are much too large?

Metallicalover · 09/08/2020 09:41

@hjtip10 just to let you know gestational diabetes doesn't occur because you gain weight in pregnancy. It's due to your placenta and the hormones secreted inhibiting your insulin production.
You can get GD no matter what your body size.

OP your 3 stone weight gain is a lot. I would speak to your midwife. You shouldn't go on a diet in pregnancy but you should eat healthily and in moderation and exercise when you can (again in moderation and not overdoing it) x

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 09/08/2020 09:43

@hjtip10 gestational diabetes isn't caused by what you eat during pregnancy.

It is a placental issue. Its absolutely nothing to do with what you eat or don't eat.

During pregnancy, the body produces a number of hormones, such as oestrogen, progesterone and human placental lactogen (HPL). These hormones make the body insulin resistant, which means the cells respond less well to insulin and the level of glucose in the blood remains high

People with an already higher BMI are more at risk but you cant give yourself gestational diabetes.

I have it in this pregnancy but didn't in my last. I am exactly the same in both, BMI isn't high, eating well.

ittooshallpass · 09/08/2020 09:49

Op is the weight gain due to water retention?

I had terrible problems with water retention throughout my pregnancy.
I gained 4 stone in total, but lost 2 within days of giving birth, so it was just fluid.

Still not safe though and the concern for me was pre-eclampsia. Definitely speak to your midwife and find out what's going on.

Carabu1 · 09/08/2020 10:13

That does seem like quite a bit - have you spoken to midwife about it though, because it will depend on your weight/height/medical history etc. I’m 20 weeks now and have gained about 5kg. This is on high end of recommended but I had a low bmi before so nobody is worried about it. Yet...!

Dogsgowoofwoof · 09/08/2020 10:14

That’s quite a gain. I’d definitely ask some advice from your mw, even if just to reassure you.
I’m 25 weeks and I’ve gained 10-14lbs (if I have a few healthy days, I lose about 4lb).

candyflossatthefair · 09/08/2020 12:23

Hi and I’m not offended (although screaming faces aren’t helpful.)

A lot of it was tri1. I was exhausted and very sick and the only way to keep sickness at bay was to eat. That caused weight gain. Also not moving much (went from 10000 steps minimum to 3000 maximum.)

So now I’m eating 3 meals a day and I’m not snacking in between. But I worry the choices aren’t always healthy. For instance yesterday I had cereal with semi skim milk for breakfast. Then a sandwich with Brie and grapes! Then dinner was healthy enough - salmon steak and a salad. Plus plenty of walking (13000 steps.)

So I’m hoping not to gain any more and then try to get to a healthy weight after I have the baby.

In my first pregnancy I ate whatever I wanted and was lightly active put on 4.5 stone however nearly 2stone of this was water fluid retention from 33/34 weeks due to preeclampsia. This pregnancy I ate healthy, walked 10-17k steps every single day from 12 weeks onwards and guess what ..34 weeks came and bam overnight super swollen. Developed preeclampsia again and got weighed Last week and despite all my efforts Iv still out on 4 stone !
I think some people will just naturally put on extra regardless of habits and whilst it’s important to be healthy and not overdue the treats and keep active I think getting obsessed with a number or max target is not helpful as despite all best efforts you can still bypass it. All the best for the remainder of your pregnancy x
