Winter coats that fit over the bump!

As the weather has been getting cooler I've been putting on my overcoats and realising that there is no way they're going to fit over the bump much longer... certainly not until January!

I had a little scout around online and there doesn't seem to be an overwhelming number of maternity over coat options (probably because people don't want to pay a fortune for something that they might only wear for a few months?)

what to do? does anyone have a strategy or experience for keeping the bump warm as it grows beyond the bounds of the average overcoat?

I was 6m pg this time last year and didn't get a new coat for the exact reason you mentioned. Fortunately I had a coat that could zip from the top downwards aswell as up so I used to zip it from the neck down to the top of my bump where it wouldn't go any further!
Lived in those long length jumpers though and by the time it was really cold I was too fat to move very much and didn't venture out! Also I think most people tend to feel quite warm during pg so getting trussed up in winter gear isn't always comfy.

ImBarryScott · 02/10/2007 08:46

I got a cheapo Primark/peacocks (can't remember which) regular coat. I bought it a size too big, and it was belted, so I could give it a bit of shape. Much better value than getting a maternity coat!

claraq · 02/10/2007 08:59

Will be wearing DH's jackets/fleeces as he is quite big. If I grow out of those will just not go out!

ClaphamLauren · 02/10/2007 09:30

Zara do a really good pea coat that has lots of room for bump to grow and because of the style you could wear it post-pregnancy too! Also, capes and big wool pashminas are always an option if you don't mind the hassle of wrapping them.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/10/2007 09:32

In my last pregnancy (don't know what I did for the others!) I bought a sort of duffle coat 2 sizes too big for me from a jumble sale for 10p (figured it didn't matter as long as it kept me warm) and wore that.

The embarrassing thing to admit is that I still get it out each winter and wear it occasionally as I love it so much.

claraq · 02/10/2007 09:33

I might be really really thick but what is a pea coat? (visions of a coat covered in green peas...)

Nbg · 02/10/2007 09:34

When I was pg last year I bought a gorgeous brown wool poncho thing from Monsoon in the sale and it was fab.

Now I'm pg again (due in Nov) I am wearing it and its perfect.

BetsyBoop · 02/10/2007 09:34

I wore DHs anorak/fleeces last time (DD due 18/12) & will do the same this time if it gets cold enough (due 30/10) - I'm too mean to spend money on a maternity coat I'll only wear for a couple of months

ClaphamLauren · 02/10/2007 10:04

A pea coat is a coat that has big buttons and is normally a heavy wool, I have one like this images.ninewest.com/images/nw/product/PG.9W7MC920GC.BLACKFB.PD.jpg
(only picture I could find - Zara website is useless!)
however mine is single breasted and as they hang off of your boobs they have loads of belly room especially if you go a size bigger. I'm usually a medium in Zara but I went for a large and have tonnes and tonnes of room.

angelcake99 · 02/10/2007 11:00

I have just bought a lovely black swing coat from next. which I bought in my usual size and it has bags of room! Its not a maternity coat as such just from their usual range, it was £60, so not too bad.and hopefully i can get some wear out of it after I have the baby too because of the style of it. Its in the Autumn/winter catalogue.

Cazzybaby · 02/10/2007 11:17

Sorry to change the subject slightly but have Zara got a website that show thier maternity range?? Got some really great jeans the other day on the store but wanted to see what else they had, but can't seem to find website??

susiemj · 02/10/2007 11:21

Hi Sabinar - I'm on an internet hunt.

I have found this

There's this

and there's a long fleece on jojomamanbebe. What do you reckon to these?

Cazzybaby · 02/10/2007 11:25

ooo I really like the red one on the bumps website!

susiemj · 02/10/2007 11:28

I like the red one too. Think it would be an antidote to those 'I feel like a dishrag' days. Don't know if you have them but I do!

Cazzybaby · 02/10/2007 11:43

I really like the boots that she has on in that photo too. They only have a little heal but with my balance at the moment I think even that is too much!

sabinar · 02/10/2007 11:45

oooh, I reckon I could buy a couple of those bumps coats (or at least, decide on one to buy)... thanks for the link!

I have to say, I quite fancy the puffer jacket ;) The red one is v cute too.

OP posts:
susiemj · 02/10/2007 12:34

I'm glad you like the puffer. I did too. But I was wondering if it was nice or if you'd end up feeling a bit older than you should (trying to phrase that nicely - hope I succeeded). What do you think?

sabinar · 02/10/2007 12:42

lol. I hear you

I have a brown puffer now that I wear all the time and I love... not sure if it makes me look like a try-hard teenager... perhaps I'm in denial ;) Anyway, I am loathe to grow out of it, so seeing the pregnancy version made me v happy

I think it probably depends on what else you tend to wear. I have a pretty casual wardrobe as a rule, so think it would probably work better for me than the red one (as nice as it is. I don't think I dress well enough for it!)

Shall I buy it then and tell you how it looks? ;)

Had to add to this as have been frantically hunting for coats - due in April so know I'm going to need one.
Formes and Isbella Oliver have lovely ones. Not cheap but worth it I think. Holding off till after scan before I buy any maternity stuff just in case but will be getting them asap afterwards.
I can't do links but have a look on their websites.
Also considering having one made by a dress maker I know. So that could be an option for you if like me you can't bare the thought of not looking like your normal self for the best part of six months.
Hope that helps
x

gingerlily · 02/10/2007 13:12

I bought a swing coat from H&M for £19 in my normal size, it is fitted at the top and then gets wider towards the bottom so fits perfectly over my bump while not being huge.

They had a few different colours and styles, all cheap. Primark has similar styles so even cheaper.

mawbroon · 02/10/2007 13:55

Sabinar - if you are planning to do babywearing with your baby, then this might be a good option
Kindercoat

I wish I had one of these when I was pregnant and all the time I was carrying ds. In fact, I still carry him (he's nearly 2) and am ttc no2 so will hopefully get some use out of it. I have ordered one new as I haven't been able to find a second hand one. The fact that there don't seem to be many second hand makes me think that you would be able to sell it on no problem when you were done with it.

mawbroon · 02/10/2007 13:57

Sorry, I didnt explain very well that although it's a babywearing coat, the extra front panel can be put in to accommodate a bump. My last post was a bit garbled, hope it makes sense.

susiemj · 02/10/2007 14:05

Mawbroon - could you post that link again? I don't think it happened properly. I'd like to take a look.

Lulubump · 02/10/2007 14:09

Sabinar - thanks for directing me to this thread!!!

Love that red coat too, from Susiemj's links. It isn't lined though...so maybe not as warm as it looks?

ClaphamLauren - I too saw that Zara coat, and its gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Unfortunately, they don't have a large size in my local branch, and the medium fits a little too perfectly right now - so probably doesn't leave room for three more months of bump-growth. Am really disappointed, esp as they can't order them in from another store, and never know what they'll get in their deliveries
