How to handle Glucose Tolerance Test

Hey,

I’m just back from a glucose tolerance test. Which if you’re reading this I’m sure you know the woes of.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how not to feel like total crap for the rest of the day? I need to get some work done!

Xxx

I went to work straight after mine (work was closer to the hospital than my house). I had a nice quiet sit down, a cup of tea and several rounds of sandwiches. Then I did some non-stressful computer-based work for the rest of the day.

Mine did shake me up a bit tho. If I had another one I'd get someone else to drive me and take the rest of the day off. But no one tells you that beforehand do they?!

Rainy88 · 04/08/2020 12:22

Sorry I haven't experienced it so don't have any advice although I've potentially got it coming up...dare I ask, what makes it so bad?

bumpyknuckles · 04/08/2020 12:26

It's the not being able to eat for aaaages bit. And the repeated blood draws. They're not very fun.

LBB2020 · 04/08/2020 12:29

Have something to eat and drink and have a rest/nap. Hopefully after that you should start feeling better x

CannonCaboodle · 04/08/2020 12:31

It's two blood draws after a 12 hour overnight fast. I'm not sure why you'd feel like crap for the rest of the day.

Metallicalover · 04/08/2020 12:32

Have you finished the test and had all your blood taken?
I remember feeling dreadful after mine and all I wanted to do was nap! So I did!
I later found out I had GD and that was probably the reason I felt so rubbish!
Take it easy!

loverofpants · 04/08/2020 12:34

I ate something and had a million drinks then had a short nap. I did end up having GD though which is why I felt crap from all the sugar! Try to take it easy on yourself x

LBB2020 · 04/08/2020 12:54

It’s a harsh test and the glucose drink really pushes your body, along with not eating for over 12 hours plus 2/3 blood tests (my 28 week bloods were done at the same time) I think that’s why you feel rubbish afterwards

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 04/08/2020 12:57

Have a good healthy meal, veg, protein and complex carbs, something like a chicken sandwich on whole grain bread with salad.

Drink plenty of water and have a bit of a sit down. Within an hour you should be good to go.

Intricate56 · 04/08/2020 13:01

I felt terrible after mine, ate straight away but then horrible waves of nausea and dizziness hit a couple of hours later and lasted the rest of the day. I was fine the next morning. Same thing happened second time around. Both tests came back positive for GD, don't know if that affects how you feel afterwards.

mammagmac · 04/08/2020 14:22

Thank you everyone! I’ve sat still, eaten healthy and not put too much pressure on myself and I feel okay.
How quickly do the results come?

Sairafina · 04/08/2020 14:29

I have mine coming up next Monday and am nervous for it. Blood draws usually result in nearly passing out anyway (childhood trauma) so having 3 on an empty stomach is going to be loads of fun...

In terms of the results, I just want to clarify that if it comes back positive it's through no fault of my own? I've been eating well and exercising but v.conscious that a positive result might reflect badly?

October2020 · 04/08/2020 14:30

I'm really surprised by this thread as I had mine and noticed absolutely no side effects whatsoever. Two blood tests is not loads and the sugary drink just tastes like the cheap squash you feed kids! I actually really enjoyed it, seriously, two hours to chill in hospital and read my book was lovely!!

Just wanted to share my totally positive experience as I would have panicked if I had read this before mine!

orangejuicer · 04/08/2020 14:32

Same as October!

Metallicalover · 04/08/2020 15:04

@Sairafina it's all to do with the placenta and insulin resistance. It's got nothing to do with how health you eat etc. Of course there's risk factors such as PCOS, genetic disposition. I know Marathon runners who have had GD.

Peach1204 · 04/08/2020 15:08

Sorry to hear you're suffering. My midwife spoke to me yesterday about the test and said it's no longer a drink and it will be a blood test. She said due to Covid and the length of time the process with the drink takes (e.g waiting around for a couple of hours) they no longer do it that way. I wonder if this is different for each hospital? I hope you're better soon.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/08/2020 15:10

I had my results very quickly. Hospital rang same day.
Guess it depends on area and if you have it or not.

Staplemaple · 04/08/2020 15:11

Why would you really care if it would reflect badly? It's done to identify those who require extra care for themselves and their baby, they aren't going to judge (unless perhaps you've been injecting sugar directly into your eyeballs several times a day).

Napqueen1234 · 04/08/2020 15:24

I had one it was absolutely fine but I did feel really shaky and weird after it. I went to the local cafe and had an enormous fry up and massive cup of tea. I vividly remember my hand shaking a lot as a drank it but after that I was right as rain. I’m generally a healthy eater but I needed those calories! Ours was a no news it good news after 24 hours (mine was negative) so I don’t think it’ll be long to hear.

Sairafina · 04/08/2020 16:14

Thank you @Metallicalover!

@Staplemaple lets just say I have a very judgmental family member who would definitely make out it was as a result of something I had/hadn't done. I suppose the thing to do there would just be to not tell them!

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 04/08/2020 16:31

@Peach1204 think it varies. I had the full GTT 6 weeks ago. They let me sit in my car for the 2 hour wait.

Theres a lot of concerns that cases are being missed by just doing the HBAC1 blood test.

Peach1204 · 04/08/2020 16:45

@Yorkshirepudding1987 ahhh ok. I think I'll bring that up when I go in for my scan then. Thank you for letting me know.

uglyface · 04/08/2020 16:47

Ah I puked soooo much after that glucose drink. Did turn out to have DG though so maybe that’s why it was so bad.

Wigglebum87 · 04/08/2020 17:40

I've had mine this morning, it wasn't too bad, not a fan of needles, but the drink was actually nice!

I came home and had my lunch and a nap, but think the nap came from being awake since 3am!

Rainy88 · 04/08/2020 18:13

What does the drink actually taste like? That's the bit I'm most worried about! I've heard a lot of people gag on it??
