External hemorrhoids, I can't take any more

Gastonimo · 01/08/2020 22:37

34 weeks pregnant and suffering with severe external hemorrhoids.

Have had 2 GP appointments over the phone over the last month and nothing has helped and its just getting worse. Tried all over the counter treatments plus prescription. Take laxitives daily to soften stool.

Now have a hard painful lump the size of a grape permanently outside my bum. Cannot sit, cannot walk, cannot sleep. Pain is excruciating.

Is it over the top to call 111 and try for an out of hours appointment where someone can actually look? Is there anything they can actually do whilst I'm pregnant? I want it chopped off. I can't live like this for the next 7 weeks. And how can I push out a baby out like this.

Any advice or positive stories of effective treatment please share because I am really struggling.

Baby is two

They are awful

For me now going to bathroom and trying to be clean where there are is a nightmare

So sorry just sending love your way

Gastonimo · 01/08/2020 22:53

Oh god poor you.

I had them post labour last time but nowhere near this extent and they did settle down.

But this is another level.

What has your GP advised? You can't live like this!

I feel your pain! This made a massive difference for me, would need to check ok during pregnancy right enough. It was recommended to me as safe to use whilst BF.

TooFrickinHot · 01/08/2020 22:56

Have you tried magnesium sulphate paste? On some gauze for 20 minutes while lying down 3 x a day.. It didn't get rid of mine but it did "deflate" them for want of a better word, and made them much more bearable.

Also vagisil - it won't treat them as such, but has a much higher strength of lidocane (painkiller) than anusol, so will numb them much better.

I think I have used both of these while preggers, but do check with your GP just to be sure.

loutypips · 01/08/2020 22:58

Can you have a bath? That was the only time I got any relief. But mine were herniated and it burst. Oh the joy when that happened!

justasking111 · 01/08/2020 22:59

What you need is frozen brussel sprouts, you wrap one in clingfilm then pop in place, sprouts take ages to defrost. Make up as needed.

My GP told me an elderly patient had recommended it because it worked. I guess if you cannot get sprouts you could freeze grapes.

Bellebelle · 01/08/2020 23:12

OP it sounds as if you’ve developed a thrombosed haemorrhoid, it’s when a blood clot forms inside a haemorrhoid. It’s not dangerous but it is really painful, I had one once and it was agony, the only thing that gave me any relief was sitting in the bath which I did about 4 times a day.

I used private healthcare which I get through work to see a specialist as while my GP was sympathetic she said that it could take months to be seen on the NHS for it. The consultant I saw was very understanding and sympathetic but explained that the surgery to get rid of them is just as, if not more, painful than the thrombosed haemorrhoid and that most go away themselves within a few weeks and he was right, mine started to ease after a couple of weeks and disappeared completely about a week later. I still have haemorrhoids but I’ve never had a thrombosed one again.

Sorry to not have a suggestion of a cure for you but hopefully the really pain will resolve itself soon and it may be worth you letting your midwife or GP know that you suspect it’s a thrombosed haemorrhoid incase they can recommend anything.

loutypips · 01/08/2020 23:19

Belle that's what I had. I was in agony!

Bellebelle · 01/08/2020 23:31

@loutypips oh I know! Mine was about 5 years ago but I can actually still remember what the pain was like, a constant sharp pain which made me feel really nauseous.

I’m also struggling, 30 weeks pregnant and have just been using OTC creams and prescribed laxatives. I feel so annoyed I let myself get constipated and this has happened. It’s just so gross, I can’t get properly clean and am always in pain. My pain isn’t as bad as yours, I can sleep and sit for a bit.
Def call your GP again or 101 if no luck. I’ve heard there are some ointments and suppositories that are prescription only and may help more. Good luck.

acquiescence · 01/08/2020 23:57

111 not 101!!

Sevo7 · 02/08/2020 00:19

I had this when I was pregnant with my Ds and was in absolute agony to the point I genuinely asked several times to be induced early because of the pain!

I found laying with an ice pop between my bum cheeks brought some relief Blush However what someone on here advised me to do and my god it was a miracle, was to gently massage the haemorrhoid with the liquid from inside a vitamin E capsule 3 times a day. I swear I’d tried everything and been to the GP at least 5 times and this was the only thing that made a difference.

Gastonimo · 02/08/2020 01:57

Thanks all.

Yes been reading and do think its thrombosed. I just can't imagine it going away on it's own. It feels like if it burst it would be a relief.

I've got a sitz bath on order. I feel like if I was in this level of pain anywhere else I'd be at A and E!
.
Thanks for the suggestions will give anything a try. Even bum sprouts!

Sevo7 did it help with pain relief/comfort levels or did it actually get rid of the piles?

Gastonimo · 02/08/2020 08:36

I've spoken to 111 this morning and nurse called and is getting a doctor to call me but she said that she didn't think anyone would see me due to Covid and not much they can do because pregnant.
I can't live like this for the next 6 weeks.

Gastonimo · 03/08/2020 14:27

Thought I'd update in case anyone comes across this thread in a similar situation.

GP sent me to A and E. Finally got an examination and was told it thrombosed and requires surgery. But can't have surgery due to risk to the baby and have to have it as soon as baby is born.

Only thing I can do is take pain relief and none of the creams will help.

Sipperskipper · 03/08/2020 14:33

Hello,

Also had a thrombosed hemorrhoid at around 30 weeks pregnant (now 35 weeks). I sympathise with the agony, I couldn't even walk to the end of the garden.

It did go away on its own after about 2 weeks - my consultant said the clot inside will usually break down on its own. In the meantime she gave me lignocaine gel to apply which is a local anaesthetic, if you could get your GP to prescribe that?

Hoping things improve soon, I was terrified how I would manage the rest of my pregnancy, but one morning it was just suddenly easier, and kept getting better.

LordOftheRingz · 03/08/2020 14:37

Cut out all caffeine, chocolate and fattly food.

Have organic porridge daily, with cut up apricots X3 in it.

Glass of water when you wake up.

On waking, do some basic yoga stretches if you can.

Go to bathroom and put Vaseline in the end of the anus, and cover the pile.

keep taking the lactulose, take it at night, before bed.

30 mins walk daily.

loutypips · 03/08/2020 21:41

Poor you! It's not nice, but it might burst before then.
Bum in the bath whenever you can, I put salts in my bath. I think it took about 2/3 weeks for it to go, and a month or so for it to go completely.

Gastonimo · 03/08/2020 21:47

Thanks all for the advice and kind words.

@sipperskipper glad yours improved on it's own. You've given me hope.

Sevo7 · 04/08/2020 15:19

@nannymags. It shrank it slightly so it didn’t feel at bursting point and meant I could push it back inside again Blush which relived the pain massively.

fafi · 04/08/2020 18:00

@Gastonimo aww love I feel you, I suffered with them BEFORE I was pregnant so lord knows what I am in for now.

@LordOftheRingz your advice is great I am sorry to say SO funny with the addition of your username 🤣

LordOftheRingz · 04/08/2020 18:14

@fafi that is why I have that name. One ring that rules them all, my ring rules my life.

fafi · 04/08/2020 18:21

@LordOftheRingz 🤣🤣🤣

MaudebeGonne · 04/08/2020 18:22

Ask your doctor to prescribe you done Instilligel (it is a local anaesthetic). Put the gel on a piece of gauze and sprinkle a tablespoon of sugar (just normal granulated sugar) and apply this to the pile 4- 6 times a day. It sounds wild, but it is evidence based - the sugar reduces the swelling. Should feel some improvement in 48 hours.
