Aibu to keep my placenta and... cook it in a pie?

(Semi light hearted thread but I'm actually serious).
So everyone IRL that I bring this up with tells me I'm crazy and/or get very grossed out. But they can't say why this is wrong. And mumsnet has never failed to be a safe space for me before

@FourPlasticRings

Why would you eat part of your baby?

It's not part of the baby.

I was being a little flippant! It is genetically the baby though.
SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 01/08/2020 14:02

🤣

HoppingPavlova · 01/08/2020 14:02

I thought this was something our prehistoric predictors (and also wild animals currently) felt they were forced to do by way of cleaning up all traces of birth so as not to alert predators that they were in a vulnerable situation. It’s hardly relevant to our situation in the here and now.

Not sure how many placenta’s you have seen but they are not exactly pie worthy.

Hardbackwriter · 01/08/2020 14:03

I don't think it's 'wrong' by the way - I just think it sounds like a bit of a waste of your energy and time because I really don't think you'll want to eat much of it. I think frying a chunk up to try first would be the way to go!

Scirocco · 01/08/2020 14:04

A guy on Reddit served up and ate cooked pieces of his own amputated leg, so I guess this isn't that weird in comparison. It doesn't sound like my cup of tea but if you're keen to try, it's not illegal or anything. Just make sure the placenta food is clearly labelled so nobody gets any unpleasant surprises...

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 01/08/2020 14:05

Why on earth would someone ask themselves "I wonder why I don't eat my own organs?!" Hmm

Don't eat my period, poo or drink my own pee either... & I'm very happy with that 🤷‍♀️

HoppingPavlova · 01/08/2020 14:07

Sorry, should have added, if you are after nutrients after the the birth then popping an actual good quality pre-frozen pie in the oven would probably serve you better than eating your placenta. Plus what you think of as easy making of a pie won’t seem so easy when you have a newborn attached to you.

But none of those are hygenic, whereas a cooked placenta (or a raw one, if fresh enough) is. I wouldn't eat any of those but did try plenty of my own breast milk in the process of checking I'd heated expressed milk to the right temperature, and I don't think that's at all gross because it's perfectly hygenic.

I don't think it's that weird that OP is wondering about it - I think it's quite normal to be curious. I just think the curiosity is quite unlikely to survive the sight/smell of an actual placenta!

Hairthrowaway · 01/08/2020 14:10

But they can't say why this is wrong.

Cannibalism?

Staplemaple · 01/08/2020 14:11

Each to their own, definitely not something I was tempted by though.

BikeRunSki · 01/08/2020 14:12

A lady I know buried her first one and planted a tree on top, and froze the second one. She got round to eating it (fried) when the child in question was about 4.

Umberta · 01/08/2020 14:14

@Hardbackwriter yes I agree it's very different from say, drinking your own wee, because as you say it's hygienic and more nutritious. But I'm very much taking on board what you and other PPs have said about it being smelly and unappealing! And also enormous by the sound of it, gosh.
Haha don't worry I will label it well, I do with all my batch cooking.
I'll have to see how it goes! Thanks everyone Smile gotta love mumsnet!!

@BikeRunSki gosh!! That is a very long time later, I don't usually keep raw meat in the freezer that long. But good to hear another story!

What's an FTM?

Umberta · 01/08/2020 14:17

@Hairthrowaway I think the main problem with cannibalism is that you're harming/killing another person?! No one would be harmed here at all.

EvilHerbivore · 01/08/2020 14:20

@CurtainWitcher First Time Mother

Hairthrowaway · 01/08/2020 14:21

Cannibalism will always illicit strong disgust in normal people. I would never consider eating “human meat”, placenta or not.

blosstree · 01/08/2020 14:21

@GrumpyHoonMain

I would rather donate it to science. Mine was used in preclampsia research.
How do you go about donating it?
Umberta · 01/08/2020 14:23

@Hairthrowaway you sound lovely and open minded Grin
@blosstree my hospital gave me a pamphlet about it at my booking appt. But that was pre covid and I've been told they aren't doing it now.

OP posts:
Rainb0wDrops · 01/08/2020 14:23

It wouldn't be my cup of tea but if it appeals to you go for it.
Do agree with others that the last thing you'll want to be doing is making pies right after giving birth. I remember visitors bringing me flowers and they sat on the side for hours before I even found the energy to plonk them in a vase. Definitely didn't have it in me to do cooking from scratch!

Thanks! I don't remember this from mine but I'll keep a look out if there's a next time

lurker69 · 01/08/2020 14:31

its not for me, they look grim, they smell grim, its been inside you for 9 months and then come out of your vagina covered in blood and god knows what else, its then plopped on scales and the midwife really gives it a good checking over. its just a no from me

Hairthrowaway · 01/08/2020 14:32

Well, you did ask why it was wrong, on a public forum.

If you want posters to be “open minded” and essentially agree with you, there’s corners of the internet like reddit and 4chan where you’ll find likeminded people who are into this

BikeRunSki · 01/08/2020 14:33

@Umberta, she didn’t mean to leave it so long, but time takes on strange proportions once babies are involved.

HandsOffMyRights · 01/08/2020 14:33

If you want to do this then that's fine.

I do wonder though by posting and telling everybody about it if you are hoping to shock people somehow.

Maybe it's ego? We can all be a little self obsessed when pregnant I think and I can understand this fascination.

Either way, good luck. I'm vegetarian and have been vegan and would not have eaten my placenta - mind you, I had twins, so double servings sound massive!
