Best Cellular Blankets?

Everywhere sells them and prices/quality seen to vary hugely! Can anyone recommend what ones they’ve found to be nice and soft? 😊

Hi OP - I bought three cellular blankets and didn't use them once Hmm DD was in a sleeping bag for all naps and bedtime as they're supposed to be safer than blankets.

Out of curiosity, when are cellular blankets even used? I thought I'd use them when she was in her Moses basket but again, I'd just zip her into a sleeping bag that was already laid out in it.

PrayingandHoping · 27/07/2020 10:46

The ones from aldi were the softest I used but I stopped using them v quickly. They were thin and stretchy and I just didn't like them. I much preferred the thickness and quality of the Mothercare ones (I had her just before they closed down). They may not have been as obviously soft but were so much nicer

PrayingandHoping · 27/07/2020 10:47

@RedPandaFluff I used them in the hospital and then for weeks at home as she was small and too small for even the smallest sleeping bags on the market.

TinySleepThief · 27/07/2020 10:50

Honestly like a PP other than using it to lie the baby on at the park we never used then either.

For sleeping we used a gro snug and then a sleeping bag and even in the pushchair I prefered actual layers of clothing than a blanket as he would just try and kick it off. Smile

Ritchie30 · 27/07/2020 10:54

@RedPandaFluff I’m so glad you said this 😅 prepping for my first baby and it’s the one thing that every mum I know has told me to get but I wasn’t sure why 😂 thought it was just be being daft!!

I know that until baby is here you don’t really know how they prefer to sleep but I was planning on some newborn sleeping bags and I also have some of the large Aden + Anais swaddle muslins and some other “nice” blankets.

I was thinking maybe cellular for in the car/pram? Baby is due this winter so thought maybe as an extra layer 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry to jump on your thread OP, but can I ask other posters, does it need to be a cellular blanket specifically? I intend to use a gro-bag bnb ut everyone is saying get at least one cellular blanket but can I not just get a regular blanket? Does it have to be cellular?

TinySleepThief · 27/07/2020 10:56

See that's why we brought one too but we still hardly used it, although I acknowledge that DS was a very warm baby so this mau have played a part. I would honestly not bother, the chances are someone will buy you one as a baby gift anyway. Grin

New2020 · 27/07/2020 10:59

I've got the gro bags but I also got some cellular blankets in case the baby doesn't like the gro bags and prefers blanket swaddling..but also to use to lay the baby down on, or to cover the baby when playing in the bouncer/ kicking on the play mat, as an extra layer in the pram or car seat.

Cellular as it is breathable

Staplemaple · 27/07/2020 10:59

We used one when he was too small to safely wear a sleep bag and for the pram, car, and later for a blanket to take to the park etc. I just bought a cheap one from Asda, it did the job. @Pinktruffle I think because they have holes in, whereas not all blankets do?

Pinktruffle · 27/07/2020 11:03

Ahh thank you. I should be ok with just one then and stick with the gro-bag plan.

Twizbe · 27/07/2020 11:04

I used sleeping bags from day one.

I do have lots of crochet blankets though (I'm a crocheter littlececrochet on insta) I had two winter babies and used them in the car or in the pram. I had pram suits but never got much use out of them. Great for snowy days but too warm if you go into a shop etc. I tended to have a thin jacket and layer up where needed.

I still use crochet blankets for nap time now

Staplemaple · 27/07/2020 11:05

I agree about pram suits, unless you know you're going to be outside for the whole time they're a major pain to get on and remove, as well as the overheating issue. I agree with layers all the way! That sounds sensible OP, I used the blanket loads to be fair, and still have it in the picnic basket.

SecondStarFromTheRight · 27/07/2020 11:13

Our baby girl was born far too small for sleeping bags so we had plenty of use for blankets. Might be worth checking the size and weight limits on the grobags first before you decide not to get any blankets as well.

Ritchie30 · 27/07/2020 11:17

@SecondStarFromTheRight I’ll definitely get one or 2 just incase 😊 Definitely better to have options on hand 😊

This is why we used gro snugs (it's like a cross between a swaddle and a gro bag). If I remember rightly they were suitable from 5 pounds so fab for those who have tiny babies.
SecondStarFromTheRight · 27/07/2020 11:24

@TinySleepThief Wish I'd known about these, they sound good.

SecondStarFromTheRight · 27/07/2020 11:29

@Ritchie30 To answer your original question, they are pricey, but the White Company do some lovely cellular blankets. They are really soft and silk edged, cosy for winter too. Keep an eye out for discount codes online as they often do 10 or 20% off.

HarrietM87 · 27/07/2020 11:33

We got a white company one as a present - it’s really lovely and soft. We did use it a fair bit when DS was a newborn for supervised naps. I used a grosnug for overnight but when he was tiny and napping in the day it was useful to tuck a blanket over him with changes in temperature which I could do without waking him (a lot harder with a gro snug!).

PrayingandHoping · 27/07/2020 11:55

@TinySleepThief grosnugs can be used from 5lbs. My baby was born 4lbs9 so had to have blankets as the grosnug was too big. And she could even use it when she hit 5lbs, it was still too big and would have been dangerous

BertieBotts · 27/07/2020 11:57

Clair de Lune ones are amazingly soft!

Oh wow your DD was teeny bless her. Obviously you had no choice with what to use, with one so tiny I think a blanket would be the only option. We has a 6 pounder and he everyone commented on how small he was. I can't imagine one any smaller than him. Grin

Sarahlouise86 · 27/07/2020 12:01

I have a couple of cellular blankets from the white company - not the cheapest but amazing quality.

My son is too small to use the grobags yet (most have a minimum weight/size) so I can see us using the cellular blankets for a while. Currently use them in his bedside crib, moses basket which is downstairs and when he goes out in the pram or car.

I think they are great as they easily allow me to regulate his temperature by single/double/triple folding and he likes them tucked into the side of his mattress. They were a lifesaver in hospital as he was having his temperature checked every hour or so and a lot easier to adjust his blanket than remove/add a layer of clothes and disturb him.

But as other posters have said, a lot of babies are able to go straight to sleeping bags.

Hanrora06 · 27/07/2020 12:12

Sorry @Ritchie30 I'm jumping on too!! Thank you for this thread, so useful. I have a question about the bags- what's the difference between a Grobag and a Grosnug? They both say from 5lb. I assume they're just different names for the same product? It seems that The Gro Company and Tommee Tippee are the same company anyway, as it just redirects from the Gro Company to the TT website.

pinkcattydude · 27/07/2020 12:16

We got ours from Matalan, as when I walked around the store with the mothercare one I realised I was covered in bits from theirs. I worried the baby would be inhaling bits of fluff.

Metallicalover · 27/07/2020 12:18

Get a gro snug which is suitable for babies over 5lb and you have the option to swaddle or have babies arms out (my little one didn't like to be swaddled)
I've got a couple of cellular blankets. Mainly used in the pram. Just the ones from Aldi!
