i've had 2 beautiful dc with each i had 2+ stone to lose after the birth, i was wondering if anyone has had the experience of putting on loads of weight in 1 pregnancy and not so much in another. i think i would like to have one more but am really put off by the thought of rapid weight gain again. i just seem to pig out when i am preganant

The sad anaswer is stop eating so much!

Harsh but true.

On the plus side I am overweight and have been in both of my pregnancies. My strategy was to join Slimming world. There the focus is on what you eat and not how much (your time at SW whilst pregnant is opverseen by your MW and other medical carers).

In my first pregnancy I gained just over a stone (it was a twin pregnancy!).

This time I'm 34weeks and have gained 4lbs so far!

Believe you me, I like to eat and many a chocolate bar, packet of crisps, slice or three of cake etc have found a happy home in my tummy but I find it helps just to be weighed each week and keep track of it.

I don't think you should beat yourself up if you can't stick to the healthy eating plan when you're pregnant though. Have the baby and lose weight later if you have to. Pregnanacy is not the time to get horrifically strict about the odd biscuit etc.

I did have a Mars Bar habit in the last month of my pg, which turned into the last 6 weeks as DD was two weeks late! It was not good! Luckily, with DS I had a carrot habit which was far healthier but the luck of the draw really! The only answer is to eat healthily and not eat crap but when you're pg you sometimes just N E E D something bad!

Spidermama · 30/09/2007 17:00

Yep. Stop with the pies and donuts. Not that I was ever able to. I felt a strong urge to stuff myself with stodge in every pregnancy.

good advice! somehow i persuade myself when pg that it's o.k to eat the whole packet iykwim. weighing myself would be a good idea although i don't know what a reasonable weight gain is

Exercise is really part of the deal too. Walking and swimming especially good. Even if you don't do it normally it's OK to start in pg as long as you don't go mad.

Good luck x

The problem is, girls, that society deems pregnancy the ONLY time in our lives that it is acceptable to gain weight (eating for two...) but then demands that as soon as we have given birth we magically slip back into our pre-pregnancy jeans. Personally, I think it's pressure to be slim from EVERYWHERE that makes us want to eat more than we need in the first place, pregnant or not, because in this way things are 'good' or 'bad' or 'treats'. The trick is to just eat until we are full and eat whatever you want, but don't kid yourself into eating things because you think you shouldn't be eating them and will only be able to eat them whilst pregnant. Easier said than done, and can't say I've mastered it completely!!!

fireflyfairy2 · 30/09/2007 18:17

Develop hyperemisis like I did & spend a month in hospital on a drip That saw me gain 9lb through my whole pregnancy & ds was 7lb 2oz!

Tbh I'd much rather gain than go through what I did!

didsnbump · 01/10/2007 11:37

I would love to know how not to gain weight, as im am 25 weeks and have so far gained over 2 stone.

Fair enough before i was pg i was a size 8 and was very carefull with what i ate, which during the day was normally only crackers and fruit.

But i really dont feel like i am over doing my eating, i have breakfast now which i didnt before, a little more for lunch then before, and i treat myself to deserts now but the gain is quite scary, i cant even get my jeans and things that i used fit into much past my knees!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wizzska · 01/10/2007 11:52

Daisy - I've not put any weight on except on my bump. I have been lazy and eaten loads of chocolate. I think unfortunately this is just down to luck and genetics. I don't really understand as I've been no stranger to weight watchers in the past but during pg I've been fine. Don't worry about it - you've got more important things to think about at the moment.

macaco · 01/10/2007 12:06

well for me so far the secret has been to puke about 4 times a day and not be able to stomach most food. I've lost half a stone (am 11 weeks). We'll see how it goes when the sickness stops. I think one important thing is not to eat for 2.

Baffy · 01/10/2007 12:12

Don't 'eat for 2', make sure you have lots of fruit and veg, try not to have lots of sugary and fatty foods just because you think you can get away with it while you're pregnant!

Healthy snacks wherever possible. The extra incentive for me to stick to that was knowing that the baby was benefitting from the 'good' things I was eating.

Then if the odd chocolate bar or piece of cake is necessary then it's not such a big deal.

Everything in moderation. But go for the healthy options whenever possible.

Worked for me.

i am 22 weeks and have already put on a stone, but started out a fairly trim size 8 so fondly imagine its mainly baby/water retention.

In answer to reasonable weight gain question, apparently 28-35lbs is about right unless you were over/under weight before getting pg.

With ds1 i put on 2.5 stone and lost it fairly easily within 2 months, but i did breastfeed which helps.

Anecdotal evidence from friends suggests anything over 3 stone is biscuits not baby weight and will more difficult to shift...

LadySanders · 01/10/2007 12:29

ps, me also craving stodge which is most unlike my non pregnant self... have upped my daily essential fatty acids supplements on advice of nutritionist friend which hopefully might sort out my body's need for extra fat...

dal21 · 01/10/2007 12:41

keep unhealthy snacks out of the house - sounds boring, but I never have anything 'fun' into eat - no biccies/ cakes/ crisps/ icecream...you get the picture.

try and eat low GI foods that keep you full for longer - porridge etc.

eat homemade food as much as you can.

drink lots of water, a lot of cravings can be kept at bay by staying well hydrated.

I only gained 2 stone with this pregnancy and after 2 weeks had lost a stone of it.

the above worked for me but it did take a lot of willpower to stay away from the unhealthier stuff - but now, I am so glad that I did!

berrybliss · 01/10/2007 12:43

I haven't put on much weight bump is all outfront(but i am having a boy and i think you put on less weight with a boy)I eat at least one small chocolate bar a day (which i didn't before pregnancy) I think it is luck of the draw really and not going crazy and over eating. Also drink lots of water!!

brimfull · 01/10/2007 12:44

just eat normally
I gained about a stone with each pregnacy, but I didn't suffer with extra hunger.
I did drink loads of water though as I was thirsty and hot a lot.
It must be much harder if you actually feel abnormally hungry though.

bumperlicious · 01/10/2007 12:46

Make sure you carry healthy snacks around with you, e.g. fruit, raisins, nairns do some lovely sweet oatcakes. It stops that bit where suddenly you are so hungry that if you don't eat within the next 5 mins you are gonna puke!

TheMuppetMuggle · 01/10/2007 12:49

Don't eat for 2 and eat lots of fruit & veg and drink plenty of water - although i know not good when you feel the need to pee all the time!!
I also walked alot during my last pregnancy, so that helped i gained about 2 stone but came straight off after i gave birth and continued eating healthy and walking alot

MrsBadger · 01/10/2007 13:16

luck
and genes

I stuffed myself with cake and barely got bigger anywhere except norks and the bump (didn't weigh myself though).

DD is now 6wks and I am about 5lb off my pre-pg weight, most of which appears to be breast.

Apparently my mother was just the same...

lizziemun · 01/10/2007 13:18

With my first i was hungry all the time, and did put on 2 stone.

With my second pregnancy i just didn't feel hungry so i just ate because it was a meal time, so although i went from 13st 7lb to 14st 7lb a week before i had dd2. When i weigh myself a week after i had dd2 i weigh 12st 9lb.

But both times i have just gone with the flo, i eaten when hungry.

As others have said try to eat as healthy as possible.

daisyartichoke · 01/10/2007 13:25

spanna07- i definitely relished the thought of being able to eat what i wanted.

only making homemede is a great idea, although i don't know if i'd stick with it, much harder though to stuff your face if you have to plan it in advance

thank you for allyour posts i am feeling much more posotive about the possibility of having anotherdc without going crazy on food.
