Moses basket or not

Hi all, FTM hoping for some advice..

We are trying to cut down on purchases and were intending to use the removable buggy carry cot for supervised daytime naps in the living room. However

  • carry cot can't go straight on the floor (it would just be too tempting for the cat)
  • we walk in the woods and DP isn't keen on having the whole pram in the living room as wheels are likely to be muddy
  • we have a very large, low, sturdy coffee table next to the sofa that the carry cot could stand on.. It is totally stable but is it ok to put a carry cot on a table? Even a low one?

Alternative is a moses basket with a stand.. Would that be better?

Any advice appreciated - 37 weeks now and panicking about having everything ready for the imminent arrival!

What do you intend the baby to sleep in at bedtime?
I bought a 40quid Moses basket for day and night- grew out of it at 3.5months so was glad I didn’t buy the £100+ one I wanted originally.

muststopeatingfroyo · 09/07/2020 21:11

@OnlyFoolsnMothers we have a snuzpod (next to me cot thing) for upstairs. The top comes off but it would be quite cumbersome to carry downstairs regularly.

Yes it can go on the table, but check for cat interest before baby arrives.

Is it a hard base carry cot? If so you could put that on a Moses basket stand if it would fit.

I'm my limited experience cats love Moses baskets.

HappyPotato · 09/07/2020 21:13

I never saw the point in a moses basket, baby went straight into a full size cot, slept mostly in my arms in the day and then took naps downstairs in her rocker chair

DwellInPossibility · 09/07/2020 21:14

And if you get a stand don't get a rocking one.

Misscoffeecrazy3 · 09/07/2020 21:18

Sorry no alternative suggestions as my son currently sleeps in his swing, in my arms and on his play mat during the day I’m not sure whether these options are considered ‘okay’ but he cat naps so would be pointless having a specific sleeping space for him downstairs. He’s in a big cot for his nighttime sleep. We had a Moses basket for my daughter it was an absolute waste of money and space. It was wicker so made an absolute racket every time she moved, often waking her up and she only fit into it for about 8 weeks.

muststopeatingfroyo · 09/07/2020 21:23

@DwellInPossibility yeah, we're going to have to watch the little bugger like hawks. At least with the coffee table he already knows he's not allowed on there (although I wouldn't out it past him).

What's wrong with rocking stands? I thought they might be a good idea Hmm

Get a second hand one then sell on when finished. They are barely used so easy to pick one up in good condition.

muststopeatingfroyo · 09/07/2020 21:30

@byvirtue do they not need a new mattress anyway? Or is that just bedtime cots?

BurnIt · 09/07/2020 21:31

I got mine 2nd hand also and sold them after for about the same. I know they're not super popular on here but mine still slept in theirs until they went in their own room at 7.5 months

OnlyToWin · 09/07/2020 21:31

We just went straight to big cot. Dds would sometimes sleep on playmat downstairs, but once older all daytime naps were in the cot upstairs. We didn’t have any pets though.

gonewiththerain · 09/07/2020 21:32

I’ve just bought a new Moses basket (£23) in Asda for baby number 2. DS used his for 7 months. I stood the basket on a big foot stool thing instead of a stand.
We have a cat unfortunately she likes anything that a baby sleeps in. Thankfully not when ds is in anything though. We joke they have timeshares on the pushchair. When he was a baby I used a cat net and the cat has always slept in the garage at night on the boiler.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/07/2020 21:36

Oh then Don’t buy a Moses basket as well. Carry cot will be fine. Could the cat go in another room? I second don’t buy a rocking stand, my baby hated it, so the Moses basket was actually on our floor in our room of a night in the end.

MsSquiz · 09/07/2020 21:37

We just used the carry cot from the pushchair on the floor by the sofa and we have 2 cats. They would go over to peep in on DD when she was in there, but then wander off. Neither of them tried to jump in when she was there.
Plus, babies don't nap unsupervised for a good while so you (or your DH) will be there to keep an eye on the cats. Obviously when you go to the toilet or get a drink, you can shut the door for those few moments to keep the cat out of the room

PrayingandHoping · 09/07/2020 21:37

Get a Tinylove 3 in 1 rocker. Can be used for daytime sleeping and then also used as a bouncer then a chair. My baby is now 8 months and still using it!

byvirtue · 09/07/2020 21:38

Yes I did they are super cheap from Asda but I was a bit precious about my PFB! I also used a sleepyhead, bouncer and pushchair cot. I have a dog so it was useful to have a designated place to put the baby in each room we used regularly.

Miljea · 09/07/2020 21:40

Where I had my two, in suburbia, Sunshine Coast, Australia, '99-01; there was one Moses basket on a stand that did the rounds through about 5 families! Often at least twice! 😂

Horehound · 09/07/2020 21:41

Sorry opbut I think snuzpods aren't meant for nighttime sleeping are they? Aren't they seemed dangerous?

I didn't think I'd use a Moses basket but we got a hand-me-down from my aunt and uncle and honestly, we used it multiple times a day. Loved it.
As pp say it was outgrown say by month four and then I just used his next to me cot then his big boy cot.

TeddyBeans · 09/07/2020 21:41

You don't need to take the carrycot off the pram frame to use it for naps if space isn't an issue downstairs. You can also get cat nets to stop your cat getting into baby things

I wouldn't bother with a Moses basket, baby will grow out of it too quickly or may not even fit in the first place

TeddyBeans · 09/07/2020 21:42

Oop missed the bit in your op about the wood walks 🤦‍♀️ I've seen a hack about using shower caps on the wheels to transition indoors without having to clean the wheels off 😁😁

Horehound · 09/07/2020 21:43

Maybe it's a sleepyhead I'm thinking of that aren't safe.

Onekidnoclue · 09/07/2020 21:46

Kind of off topic but you could put shower caps on the pram wheels if they are muddy and bring it in. X

muststopeatingfroyo · 09/07/2020 21:47

@Horehound snuzpods are just cots that go next to the bed so intended for nighttime sleeping. I think you're thinking of sleepyheads.

I was gifted one by a friend & bought a new mattress from Asda for £8/9. I found it very useful in the early days for downstairs naps as we had a next2me upstairs. Maybe have a look at second hand & buy a new mattress?
