Moses basket or not

Hi all, FTM hoping for some advice..

We are trying to cut down on purchases and were intending to use the removable buggy carry cot for supervised daytime naps in the living room. However

  • carry cot can't go straight on the floor (it would just be too tempting for the cat)
  • we walk in the woods and DP isn't keen on having the whole pram in the living room as wheels are likely to be muddy
  • we have a very large, low, sturdy coffee table next to the sofa that the carry cot could stand on.. It is totally stable but is it ok to put a carry cot on a table? Even a low one?

Alternative is a moses basket with a stand.. Would that be better?

Any advice appreciated - 37 weeks now and panicking about having everything ready for the imminent arrival!

Probably flamed for this. First night home, in the cot , in his room, end of. Absolutely no probs and we ended up with a son who loved his own bed.

Horehound · 09/07/2020 22:25

@Whoopsmahoot but weren't you having to go to his room every couple of hours to feed him?
I won't flame you but just my opinion that baby has lived inside you for 9 months and then on day 1 of the big bad world is shipped off to his own room. Seems a bit cold!

Whoopsmahoot · 09/07/2020 22:32

@horehound. Was in hospital for 2 weeks after he unexpectedly arrived, but yes I did feed him every 2 hrs, he certainly wasn’t quiet about when he wanted fed. Worked for us and he was happy. Only with hindsight do I realise how easy he was. As long as he was well slept everything else was easy, just hell if he didn’t get enough kip. 🤣

My baby loves her bed and she was in our room in a Moses basket until 6 months according to the safe sleeping guidelines....

She slept in her Moses basket at night and in her tiny love rocker during the day. No issues

Broomfondle · 09/07/2020 22:35

Just a suggestion, but if you think you will need a travel cot anyway you could use that if you have enough space downstairs. If baby has fallen asleep in pram carrycot you can lift that out and put whole carrycot into travel cot - gives good cat protection. And when not using carrycot can go straight in travel cot. They're cheap to get anyway and you can use it for travelling.

Re: rocking stand.
They're great if you have a baby who will be rocked to sleep in it, but I've yet to meet one. Otherwise you rock/bounce/feed/whatever baby to sleep. Then baby wakes because you nudge the basket putting them down, or because you knock it whilst checking on them, or because the cat paws it, or because baby moves in any way.

My first was prem so got quite a bit of use out of the Moses basket. 2nd absolutely hated it and wouldn't sleep in it. I wouldn't bother if I were to have another.

chubbyhotchoc · 10/07/2020 08:59

I saw this on fb and thought it might be a good extra for downstairs. Bigger than a Moses basket

Ooh interesting. I like that it comes with a built in cat net, and if I get tired can have a nap in it too 😂

I never bothered with a Moses basket for my two. They were both big babies and wouldn’t have fitted in a basket for long anyway. They had naps either upstairs in a cot, or downstairs in the carrycot top from the pram. My cat avoided them both like the plague, and showed no interest in climbing into the pram!

Mummapenguin20 · 10/07/2020 09:26

I have a moses basket for down stairs have done for my other two children too, just a insight on the cat (i know not all cats are the same) i got my cat at 48hrs old after him mum wouldnt feed him. My second child was 3 weeks old. Shes now 7 and to this day he will not get on her bed never got on her pram or moses baskets but does lay in front of them and gaurds her if shes poorly noone can get near her because he attacks you lol x

userabcname · 10/07/2020 09:35

I thought my moses basket was the biggest waste of money with my first so didn't bother with my second. Like pp I have chunky babies who don't fit in them for long! Downstairs mine slept in the travel cot or bouncer chair when they allowed me to put them down (which wasn't very often!).

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 10/07/2020 09:50

Someone told me to cover the opening of the crib/moses basket in tin foil and have it out in it's normal place for a month before baby arrived.
Out usually box/basket/bag/anything that she's not meant to be in loving cat jumped in once and got a bit of a shock. She's not gone near it since.
I did feel mean at the time but it was better than the alternative.

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 10/07/2020 09:52

I wouldn't buy a moses basket btw. Ours was a hand me down and ds hated it. The carrycot on the table or stand seems like a better idea.

IamMaz · 10/07/2020 09:57

We were lent a Moses basket which we used upstairs. It was really useful but I'm not sure whether we would have thought of buying one...

BeMorePacific · 10/07/2020 10:36

I had a Moses basket and stand downstairs and it worked really well. My cat used to sit under it.
I haven’t got one this time around, so I’m considering buying another 2nd hand one. Or using the baby box (provided to all Scottish parents), and is probably put that on the table. I’m still undecided. I loved the Moses basket 1st time around x

Lockdownmum1010 · 10/07/2020 11:26

We were gifted a second hand one, and baby had slept in it day and night until this week (5 months). We actually bought a rocking stand for it when it became clear that rocking settled her and it has been a godsend!! Also added benefit of the rocking stand is that the cat hasn't been near it as she doesn't like the fact it moves when she tried to step on it!

Kodiak83 · 10/07/2020 22:22

I had a snuzpod type crib for my first and she hated it, too big. My cousins gave me her Moses basket and rocker and she was instantly more settled. Subsequently used it for my second. Loved it. Yes, only got 12-14 weeks use of it but it was a god send. The rocker really helps to just tide them over a bit if they wake but just need a wee settle. A minute of rocking and it settles then back down. I wouldn’t be without it for number three.

muststopeatingfroyo · 12/07/2020 11:03

Thanks all, I've just ordered the Little Green Sheep Moses basket stand which should hopefully fit the pram carry cot🤞Also some cheapy shower caps for rolling the pram through the house Smile

Exactly what I've done op..Moses for daytime downstairs. Got next to me for upstairs. Though if I remember correctly I mostly got DD (now 5) to sleep in the day by wheeling her pram up and down the patio, whatever the weather!

Bootsray · 12/07/2020 13:44

We have gone for a inovi cocoon as it covers downstairs/bedside crib/travel cot and has mosquito net/pet net. It's bigger than a Moses basket too.
