Just wondering how many mums/expectant mums got the whooping cough vaccine when pregnant? And if not, why not? Xx

Phone your nearest gp to register tomorrow. Ask them what your next step is.

Prettylittlelady · 02/07/2020 21:58

It didn’t cross my mind not to get it

bluesapphirestars · 02/07/2020 21:59

Why on earth would I answer myself? Confused

4amWitchingHour · 02/07/2020 22:04

@bluesapphirestars - just the way you phrased it sounded like adding more info to the OP rather than answering. The OP isn't actually saying they're not going to get it.

bluesapphirestars · 02/07/2020 22:15

No, she asked a question and I answered it Confused

TJ17 · 02/07/2020 22:16

I think these NHS guidelines answer your question...not even sure why you'd ask to be honest....

Whooping cough is a highly infectious, serious illness that can lead to pneumoniaa_ and brain damage, particularly in young babies. Most babies with whooping cough will need hospital treatment, and when whooping cough is very severe they may die.
Research from the vaccination programme in England shows that vaccinating pregnant women against whooping cough has been highly effective in protecting young babies until they can receive their own vaccinations from 8 weeks of age.

Mangofandangoo · 02/07/2020 22:19

Yes. I can't think of one reason why you wouldn't

Pinktruffle · 02/07/2020 22:21

Most definitely. I've been bothering my midwife about it as my scans are with another trust and no one seems to know who will be responsible for giving it to me!

Lola871 · 02/07/2020 22:23

Chiming in with definitely! Apparently in the last 7(?) Years only 20 babies have died from whooping cough, 18 of them the mothers hadn't had the jab, and the other two they had it later than 32 weeks which is the cutoff date they give. Can you tell I've been in for mine recently? Was having a chat with the nurse about it.

Kb12 · 02/07/2020 22:26

Yes I got it

4amWitchingHour · 02/07/2020 22:26

@bluesapphirestars no biggie, my misreading Smile

chubbyhotchoc · 02/07/2020 22:27

Sorry to jump on this but does anybody know if you should still have the vaccine when pregnant if you had whooping cough as a child yourself? Do you not pass immunity on from that ?

whensmynexthol1day · 02/07/2020 22:30

In normal circumstances- yes of course.why wouldn't you want to protect your child? In the current environment where your kid could get whooping cough and coronavirus - absolutely no question

BabyDancer · 02/07/2020 23:09

Yes, as many have said, it seemed like a no brainier to protect my baby.

BabyDancer · 02/07/2020 23:10

*brainer 😅

I don't know the answer for sure but i think it would be worth discussing with your doctor. It may be that you would have immunity but unless your body is challenged - either by being in contact with the virus or by getting the vaccine - that your body wouldn't produce the antibodies and therefore your baby wouldn't become immune. As i say, i am not entirely sure but I would err on the side of caution and at least discuss it and if any doubts get the vaccine.
Sunshinegirl82 · 02/07/2020 23:18

@chubbyhotchoc

Yes you should still have the vaccination even if you have had whooping cough. The baby gets some protection from the vaccine itself as I understand it, you are protecting the baby through the mum. You also need to have it again in any subsequent pregnancy.

Helbelle17 · 02/07/2020 23:32

I had whooping cough as a child and still had the vaccine in both pregnancies. They give them at the 20 week scan at our hospital.

wannabebump · 03/07/2020 05:04

Another one here for "absolutely"

I've had whooping cough as an adult and it was absolutely horrific, the thought of a baby going through is a huge no-no for me.

chubbyhotchoc · 03/07/2020 06:29

Thanks ladies. I will ask and definitely get it if gp says yes

Hummingbird82 · 03/07/2020 07:34

I am 37 weeks and nobody has mentioned it to me?? I've never seen the same midwife twice and so many of my appointments have been over the phone.

What can I do?? Is it too late for me to have it? Will they give it to baby? Sad

TJ17 · 03/07/2020 07:42

@chubbyhotchoc

Yes you need to have it again, you only pass the immunity on it you have it whilst pregnant (between 16-32 weeks)

And you have one for every subsequent pregnancy too.

TJ17 · 03/07/2020 07:42

If *

LBB2020 · 03/07/2020 07:44

@Hummingbird82 give your GP a call this morning x

Spottybluepyjamas · 03/07/2020 07:47

Of course - no reason why you shouldn't, and the alternative is tragic
