Pre-eclampsia? ,.. can barely see

Has anybody had sudden vision loss?
It's never happened to me before.

I'm currently hydrated and I've eaten breakfast, lunch and a snack today so I can't see it being blood sugar.

At the minute I have w constant swirl/wavey spot in my peripheral vision and when I try to focus it takes over essential half my vision, to the extent I can't read my phone/see w full picture. For example, my kitchen sink seems to be missing a bit in the middle.

I can type as I have an idea where my letters are but I can't read this back to see if it makes sense so sorry if it doesn't.

Is this worth phoning triage? I don't want to phone up and it be nothing, but I'm also scared of what it could be.

God that's depressing - the awful midwife I mean. :( I think it'd be worth popping into A&E if you're close to a "clean" hospital.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 28/06/2020 17:42

If the midwife dismissed you, go to a and e, 111 will only refer to a and e anyway given your symptoms

cultkid · 28/06/2020 17:49

You ring back and say I am coming in I think I have pre eclampsia

speakfriendandenter · 28/06/2020 17:50

The midwife seems to not know what she is talking about! Headaches & vision disturbances are linked to preeclampsia. I would call the hospital or your own midwife (not sure which one you said you had already contacted, sorry) if the same midwife tries to fob you off without listening, please ask to speak to someone else. Please make it clear that you are hydrated and have eaten.
Hope you feel better soon!

PotteringAlong · 28/06/2020 17:58

Did you ring 111? I would still go to A&E

Highfivemum · 28/06/2020 18:03

Take yourself down to hospital. Trust me I have had pre eclampsia with three of my children. My latest one started at 37 weeks with vision just like yours. DH took me in and I was kept in till I had my DC. Go in ASAP. Good luck

totallyyesno · 28/06/2020 18:04

What an awful midwife. Vision issues are definitely a possible symptom of pre-eclampsia. What on earth is she talking about?

mothtoaflame · 28/06/2020 18:08

Please go to A&E. I had similar symptoms and when I called in no one took me seriously so I said I'd not felt baby move either and they finally started monitoring me. I had a very severe form of pre-eclampsia which was only diagnosed through bloods (had normal urine protein). I'm not trying to scare you but trust your gut and get checked out, as far better to be safe than sorry.

Avearage · 28/06/2020 19:10

You should just phone hospital direct and explain, I came from a appointment Wednesday and was told any visual issues headaches pain in centre of stomach to come in straight away I questioned as I suffer with horrific migraine in general and inject for them she said I would rather send you home with a migraine than without a baby....

MojoJojo71 · 28/06/2020 19:58

That’s shocking OP. Did you get her name? She needs some serious retraining. Headaches and visual disturbances are red flags for pre-eclampsia and you definitely need to be seen. Please call back, ask to speak to someone else and tell them you’re coming in to be checked. Do you have any other symptoms? Swollen hands and feet or pain just below your ribs? Is baby active?

zgaze · 28/06/2020 20:01

I would go in right now - I had pre-eclampsia and was extremely ill. They call it the ‘silent killer’ - it’s not something to trivialise or wait and see what happens. And when you are up to it I would make a formal complaint about the dangerous advice given to you by the midwife.

BuffaloMozzerella · 28/06/2020 20:03

Vision disturbances are a symptom of pre eclampsia. I was told to come in and get checked immediately when I experienced this

wintertime6 · 28/06/2020 20:07

I had similar when I was pregnant although I didn't have pre eclampsia. Turns out it was an ocular migraine which can occur in pregnancy, I'd never had migraines before. It happened when I was in work and I literally couldn't see anything apart from fuzzy lines. I wouldn't have been able to make out words etc. I took myself off to a quiet room and it resolved within around half an hour.

ChipotleBlessing · 28/06/2020 20:07

You need to go to hospital. Someone needs to take your blood pressure.

AllThatGlistensIs · 28/06/2020 20:09

That’s outrageous and dangerous misinformation from the midwife, I suffered with pre eclampsia on two pregnancies, both with blurry vision as early symptoms confirmed by Consultant. Far, far better to be seen and have it ruled out now. You really mustn’t leave it.

Sunshinegirl82 · 28/06/2020 20:10

I had PE (after my baby was born, I just loved hospital so much! I’d only been out 48 hours after 10 days in with DS1!)

The only symptom I had was an absolute blinding headache, my BP was absolutely sky high the midwife actually ran to find a doctor when she saw the numbers.

You tick quite a few of the boxes here:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pre-eclampsia/symptoms/

I would call them back and try to speak to someone else. I hope you feel better soon!

Celibacydidntwork · 28/06/2020 20:11

I agree with everyone on here you must go to hospital and get checked. It maybe just a migraine but also sounds a lot like pre eclampsia. Pop in and see a Triage they’ll do your bp in no time x

GalOopNorth · 28/06/2020 20:13

Go in.

AnnieCartwright · 28/06/2020 20:18

Please go to A&E. Immediately. They won't mind. Could you forgive yourself if anything happened to your baby for the sake of a check up?

When you're feeling better, complain about that midwives awful advice and attitude.

Magnificentbeast · 28/06/2020 20:27

Did you go to A & E OP? It really is best to get checked?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 28/06/2020 21:20

I hope you’re getting checked out OP. I felt “off” but not THAT bad, even drove myself to hospital when I was told to get checked! My BP was 190/130!

quince2figs · 28/06/2020 21:35

Please go to the admissions ward of the maternity unit NOW, by 999 ambulance if needed. Classic pre-eclampsia symptoms, and so dangerous if untreated.

SpillTheTeaa · 28/06/2020 21:44

Omg OP call an ambulance! A person my friend knows her pre eclampsia went unnoticed and the result was devastating.
This is signs of pre-eclampsia please please please go to the hospital and get yourself and baby checked ASAP!

SpillTheTeaa · 28/06/2020 21:45

Also I might add when I was pregnant I had this ever so slight pain in my arm and the doctor wanted to see me right away to take my blood pressure.

KittyMcKitty · 28/06/2020 21:45

First of all you should phone your midwife.

That said it sounds like a migraine- I first started getting them at about 35 weeks pregnant with my eldest child (and still get them 17 years later).
