How to cope during heatwave while heavily pregnant

I can’t be the only one absolutely dying in this heat!

I’m 33 weeks and it’s 30 degrees in England where I am today and I am struggling! I had taken to driving round for a few hours just so that I could use my cars air con to cool down, but now that I’m back in the house I’m losing the will to live 😂

It’s so hot outside that I will deffo burn if I sit out (I have no sun cream and I am super pale) but it feels 100x hotter indoors 😬

I’ve been squirting my head with a water bottle for temporary relief but it isn’t doing much.

Is anyone else struggling? It doesn’t help I’ve got basically no summer maternity clothes as I’ve barely been out since lockdown, I’ve just been wearing my boyfriends joggers and T-shirt’s which aren’t exactly weather appropriate anymore Hmm

I used to put wet socks in the freezer then put them on whilst frozen.

erised24 · 25/06/2020 14:18

Highly recommend getting an air con unit from Amazon! It's a little pricey but it's the best thing I've bought in years. It's the only relief I'm getting right now at nearly 37 weeks.

Lockdownseperation · 25/06/2020 14:20

Keep all blind/curtains and windows closed during the day. It sounds mad but it works.

Lukewarm showers or baths then lay naked and wet on the bed for a nap.

Hi I'm 30 weeks and struggled the last few days too. My husband put the gazebo up for me so there's shade in the garden and I've got my feet in ice cold water in my DS paddling pool and not doing too bad at all today!
Probably also helps that DS chucked several buckets of said ice cold water into my lap 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 can you have a cool shower and then don't dry yourself and lie in front of a fan? I did that last night and it was bliss!xx

Also drink lots, eat ice lollies and ice cream x

Mummapenguin20 · 25/06/2020 14:23

Im 33 weeks tomorrow and litrally feel like im melting x

Serendipper · 25/06/2020 14:23

I’ve got the paddling pool out for my son (it’s for me really!)
I’d be taking a pair of scissors to those joggers if I was you, shorts and baggy tops.

THNG5 · 25/06/2020 14:24

Definitely recommend an aircon unit. After surviving (just about) the last couple of year's heatwaves with babies or pregnant, I said never again! And I'm pregnant again so we bought 2, 1 downstairs and 1 for upstairs. Don't know how I lived without them before! Not cheap but worth every penny.

FourForYouGlenCoco · 25/06/2020 14:28

Soak a muslin in cold water, into the freezer, unfold and drape over you - do lots for bump, arms, legs, back of neck! Keep them going on rotation, they don’t last too long in heat like this but the relief is immense!

sel2223 · 25/06/2020 14:29

I'm 33 weeks too and really struggling!!

Appuskidu · 25/06/2020 14:31

You’ve got a fair few more weeks, so I think it would be worth investing in a summer maternity dress, a big floppy hat, a paddling pool and some sun cream.

Superscientist · 25/06/2020 14:32

Coolish shower, two fans - one for the room, one for me, cool drinks, sit in North facing rooms.
I'm still struggling but it's almost bareable. I'm looking forward to the thunderstorm forecast tomorrow

AliasGrape · 25/06/2020 14:32

35 weeks here.

I’m having cool showers.
Lying in front of the fan.
Have bought a couple of Evian spray face mist things, keeping them in the fridge and spraying myself when it gets too bad.
Existing on ice lollies.
Feet in a tub of cold water.

You definitely need some cooler clothes! I’m managing with summer things that are not maternity but can still fit - shorts I just don’t bother fastening them, or wearing pyjama shorts in big sizes, really loose vest type tops I used to use to sleep in, couple of light cotton maxi skirts I just pull up above the bump so they’re more midi length, currently wearing a summer dress I found in the bottom of a case - it’s not maternity but just about fits over bump. I look like a tramp of course but benefit of lockdown is that I don’t have to be anywhere 😂

okiedokieme · 25/06/2020 14:32

Can you sit under a tree? Feet in cold water can help. Run wrist undersides under a tap? Take a trip to the supermarket freezer aisle? Cool bath is a good idea before bed

okiedokieme · 25/06/2020 14:34

Oh and re clothes - wrap a sheet around you and don't bother with clothes - toga style

stairgates · 25/06/2020 14:34

I put on wet t shirts when at home, thwy work wonders!

Littleelffriend · 25/06/2020 14:36

38 weeks today, it's awful. I only really have one dress that fits, no shorts and I'm not buying anything now. Last night I just rolled around sweating

DirtyTicket · 25/06/2020 14:37

When I was pregnant with my second it was ridiculously hot. I bought a tub of menthol aqueous cream and kept it in the fridge. It's lovely to massage into swollen or aching legs and feet.

Joelle345 · 25/06/2020 14:39

I'm 38 weeks and live in an upper floor flat, so I hear you. I have a fan parked right in front of me, drinking loads of water and lots of healthy canned drinks (natural juices, no sugar type thing) which I've had in the fridge as they feel more cooling and refreshing than just water alone and they help get your electrolytes up.

Re clothes just wear a sarong and do a quick ASOS order for a couple of tent like linen dresses- I did this and just rotate wearing them both.

Yes to a cool bath or shower in the evening before getting into cotton nightie and sitting by fan again.

Wolfgirrl · 25/06/2020 14:39

Lots of ice lollies. Fill up a big bottle of squash and leave it in the fridge so you've always got a cold drink. Soak feet in bowl of cold water. Fill up a kids paddling pool and sit in it! At night, fill the bath with cold water and soak in it for a bit (don't drain afterwards). If you heat up again before dropping off, go back and have another soak.

I gave birth in the hottest week of last year. Spent a very sweaty 5 days being induced on a roasting antenatal ward, it was hell. So I do feel for you!

Wolfgirrl · 25/06/2020 14:40

Oh and Sprite Zero (diabetic, so no carby drinks for me). Lived off the stuff.

Quackersandcheese3 · 25/06/2020 14:57

I was in this position 2 years ago before DD was born.
Keep blinds closed, cool showers, wear loose flowing clothing, sit with feet in tub of cold water , moan to everyone and anyone you see!
Take care .

Titsywoo · 25/06/2020 15:02

When I was pregnant with DD 16 years ago it was a very hot summer and I sat in my underwear on the sofa with the blinds closed, my feet in a washing up bowl of cold water with a fan pointed at me and watched tv.

Babyshine2020 · 25/06/2020 15:13

My husband has also been replaced in bed by a frozen hot water bottle on a thin pillowcase .. it's lovely!

30 weeks and I can't deal with this heat! I sit outside in the garden all morning while it's still cool enough, and then as soon as the sun comes into the garden I head inside.

I coped yesterday by closing all the blinds in the house so no light/heat got in at all and had the fan on me all afternoon.

However today, I went and had a nap and when I came down, DH had opened all the blinds and the living room is now bright, hot and stuffy. I could honestly kill him! Hormones + heat + p*ssing me off = absolute (probably) irrational rage so I'm now sitting in a sulk in front of the fan eating a raw pepper because its cold 😂😂😂

EverythingBlue2020 · 25/06/2020 15:32

36 weeks here and I'm dying. I absolutely HATE it
