Using a BabyZen Yo-yo for newborns

How comfy is the newborn pack for Yo-yos?

We ordered a Yo-yo 2 because of its size (we live in London) but I didn’t realise the baby has to be strapped in to lie flat. Thanks to COVID we weren’t able to see any prams/buggies in real life before ordering...

I’d naively assumed the newborn pack was a bassinet the baby could lie flat in and move around. Is the newborn pack comfy for babies? Can they sleep properly in them?

Sorry if this isn’t the right forum to post this!

I thought it was great, and I was surprised that other prams don't have straps to be honest. Newborns generally like feeling secure. It would have been handy if it were a removable bassinet, yes, but it's such a tiny pram I was actually able to carry the whole thing up our steep, narrow staircase when he was still asleep in it when we got home. The size and weight of the Yoyo trumps everything for me.

The downsides, apart from no removable bassinet, are that if your baby is long (as DS1 was) they might be difficult to get in and out of it around the 5 month mark. We switched to the stroller a little early as a result.

Ultimately, yes, the newborn pack seemed perfectly comfy for DS1 and the straps were great as far as we were concerned. He slept well in the pram.

Agree with the above - I was glad the baby was strapped in when they were tiny, I didn't want them slipping around going up and down hills and curbs! Never found it to be an issue.

Incrediblytired · 20/06/2020 23:57

Lots of them have straps now - my britax did. Helps the baby feel secure and stable.

If I had my time again I would 100% get the babyzen yo-yo. It’s perfect for once the baby is out of lie flat - about 4 months. I don’t know how good the bassinet is but you use it for so little time that I’d rather use a really cheap or second hand one for that time.

Bubblesbebe · 21/06/2020 09:05

I also bought the Yoyo and was wondering the same.
Also, I always thought that I would need some kind of sheet on top of the mattress, but with the straps that’s not possible, do you just lie the baby directly on it without anything underneath?
Also, for those who have used it, for how long did your baby fit in the newborn pack?

BendingSpoons · 21/06/2020 09:12

I LOVE the yoyo. We only had this for DC2. He was long (97%ile) and we didn't feel we had to switch him early. I think he was still in the newborn pack until about 5.5m. It is compact but babies like being cosy, for example in a sleepyhead. They also can't really move im their sleep, so it's not a problem they are strapped in one place. As PP said, we would take the whole pram in somewhere, including carrying it up steps, so we weren't bothered the bassinet didn't stand alone.

BendingSpoons · 21/06/2020 09:17

Bubbles I used to put a muslin under DS's head when he was newborn and often a bit sicky. Otherwise I didn't use anything. I see your point about a sheet, although that never occurred to me! You probably could cut strap holes in one if you wanted.

Ihaveoflate · 21/06/2020 09:19

Lots of babies, including mine, hate carrycots and won't lie in them so they end up not being used anyway.

If I could go back in time I would not waste money on a travel system but instead get something like the yo-yo. You are absolutely doing the right thing imo.

Oatmilk1 · 21/06/2020 09:20

I have seen babies fall out of bassinets when prams are being carried up stairs at the tube so I would always recommend strapping them in or taking them out for carrying.

The stability and comfort of the Yoyo was also something I was curious to know about so thanks for asking OP! I saw a newborn in one recently and it did look better than I thought.

Does anyone know about the Bugaboo Ant (with cocoon) for newborns as on paper that seems to be similar to Yoyo but I have heard that it may not be?

Bubblesbebe · 21/06/2020 12:50

@BendingSpoons thanks for the answer, good to know he will fit there for a while and it’s a good idea to put a muslin under the head, didn’t think of that.

SeagoingSexpot · 21/06/2020 12:55

Yes, it's perfectly comfy and secure. I had a sheepskin lining for it but they're also fine just on the base. I cut holes in it for the straps with an ordinary knife.

CoolNoMore · 21/06/2020 13:59

Wait, I've just remembered... I didn't actually realise that the hood could be fully put back, so I was trying to shove DS1 under it and it was faffy. Erm, it will probably be fine right up to six months facepalm

DontStandSoClose · 21/06/2020 14:00

I had a joolz for my first child and actually hated that the bassinet didn’t have straps, if you are walking up/down a steep hill or steep curb the baby slides inside which isn’t great obviously. I’m having our 3rd (having gone through 4 prams) and will be getting a yoyo, apart from the size the thing I like about it is the fact they are strapped in in the bassinet.

Piper1879 · 21/06/2020 20:50

I have ordered the yo-yo for my baby due in September. My main concern was that I could fold it and it was light weight , I'm very happy with it , it's a lovely lightweight pram and I'll be using it from birth so I'm sure baby will be very happy in it. I'm not keen on bulky prams and as I have a flight of stairs to get to my front door , I couldn't be bothered with all the faffing with a larger pram

Scottishflower · 21/06/2020 21:40

I'm really interested in this pram but haven't seen it in person. I like the fact its light and moves with baby from birth in to a buggy style. I know this question might sound random but if anyone could give some opinions if this would suit 'tall parents'? Many thanks. X

CoolNoMore · 21/06/2020 23:25

My OH is 6' and has no problem, but I would definitely try to give it a go if you can.

Addler · 22/06/2020 14:57

I've been looking at this, I've used the 6+ before and loved it but not the newborn pack. I love the navy colour but just seen it has Air France logos?! Confused

Darkstar4855 · 22/06/2020 15:16

@Scottishflower my partner is 6ft4 and loves the Yoyo! He takes the toddler out for long walks/naps in it with no problem at all.

Scottishflower · 22/06/2020 15:34

@darkstar4855 thanks so much for info x

SimbyL · 28/06/2020 17:34

I’m thinking about ordering the Yoyo as our main pram/buggy as we live in London and I want something easy to get around with. However I’ve seen some YouTube reviews suggest it’s not that safe for 0-3 months as the nest is flimsy so baby isn’t protected if somebody bashes in to you. How true is that? Has anyone had that problem when using it? First time mum so overthinking everything. X

Aquicknamechange2019 · 28/06/2020 18:08

Am also thinking about ordering the Yo-yo for DC4, however will be having a c-section and just wondered if anyone has used the newborn pack following a c-section?

Trufflepuffpuff · 28/06/2020 21:18

I'm also thinking of ordering the Yoyo 2 (as it has better suspension than the old version apparently) and the newborn nest, so I'm following with interest. Some people say it seems a bit flimsy but others have said their babies seem very comfy in it. It sounds like it would suit us, we're also in London and would like something compact. Ideally I'd like to go and try it out but not sure how realistic that is at the moment.

ShyTown · 28/06/2020 21:25

I have a YoYo - it’s fine to push post c-section but folding it does require bending that I wouldn’t recommend for the first couple of weeks. But then you probably shouldn’t be folding or lifting any pram so the YoYo is no different. I don’t think it’s flimsy at all, we also have an iCandy peach that DD hated because she bounced around in the bassinet whilst she was snug and secure in the YoYo because of the straps. It’s very durable- we’ve had it for 3 years and will be using it for baby no.2 with new fabric.

SimbyL · 29/06/2020 08:31

Thank you @ShyTown. That’s really good to know. x

Trufflepuffpuff · 29/06/2020 10:43

The Yoyo and accessories are 10% off at the moment on John Lewis. I've just ordered one, I'm hoping it'll be suitable but can return if not.

LASandOtto · 29/06/2020 11:37

I went to see the Babyzen Yoyo 2 in store last week as it was my first choice as I'm also in London, don't drive, and mostly wanted a very easy and light option that is good to manoeuvre.

The cons I found:

  • basket is really small, and there's metal bars across is meaning it's even harder to put anything into the basket
  • cannot be parent facing from 6 months which was a bit no for me

We ended up with a Bugaboo Bee. Very similar as in also lightweight, but above issues with the Yoyo are not an issue with the Bee and you don't need to buy the carrycot if you don't want to, so can just get the cocoon which is only £89 and it's like the newborn pack for the Yoyo.

It cannot be placed in the overhead locker on a plane like the Yoyo can but we'd likely need to check luggage anyway when going away with the baby.
