In hospital... so scared

Hi all,
I am 28 weeks pregnant and been admitted to hospital today. I lost a large clot of blood and mucus so rang in and they advised I come in to be checked. I have been examined and it looks like I may be going into labour (cervix is 3 cm and I am still bleeding). They have admitted me to the ward and given me various medications including steroids for the babies lungs. I am so scared, it’s so early for baby to come now. I can’t sleep because every twinge or movement makes me think is this it??? I also haven’t bought anything with me because I was so panicked that I just drove straight to the hospital. Trying to get my family to break into my house tomorrow and bring me some stuff. Has anyone been through this??

Sorry I can’t give any advice myself other than try and sleep if you can, you are in the safest place for your baby.

Hi OP

So sorry you’re going through this!

A different situation but my waters broke at 25 weeks (I am now by some miracle 35 weeks).

Have your waters actually broken yet? So labour is like a ball rolling down a hill! Once is starts you can’t stop it but you can do things to stop it before it properly starts! And in THINK (but don’t take this for definite) if your waters haven’t broken they can POSSIBLY stop you from dilating/going into labour...

So - you’ve had your steroids - that’s amazing! Also I’m so sorry as I bet that hurt like fuck!!! I had to have 2 steroid injections in my butt cheek over 24 hours! BUT baby’s lungs are now getting a much much much needed boost!

Next up - magnesium sulphate! This is given to help baby’s brain but I wasn’t given that as I think it’s only given if you’re actually going into labour - which I wasn’t! My cervix was still closed!

I was admitted to hospital for 72 hours observation! They took my observations - BP and temp - every 4 hours to check I wasn’t developing an infection and also to see if I was going into labour! I also had to take antibiotics every 6 hours I think! These made me sick but that’s just how I react to antibiotics!! The ward was actually amazing! Midwives etc were lovely and it was surprisingly quiet!

Statistics - this is the scary bit! At 25 weeks I was told my baby had a 70-75% chance of survival and of that percentage 70-75% survived with no birth defects! Shat myself! HOWEVER at 28 weeks this goes up to 90-95%! These are good good odds! If your baby comes now they will be poorly and they will need a good stint in the NICU - there is no point saying they won’t - but they are in fantastic hands!!

You must be absolutely terrified!! I was too and Covid had just kicked off so everything was going to hell! It cant be any better for you either!

I hope this helps some and let me know if I can help any further xx

Also just to add, Whilst in hospital my husband put me in contact with a friend of his who had her baby at 28 weeks and we messaged for a while! Her daughter is now a happy healthy little chunk, has come off her oxygen and it’s hitting all her milestones xx

binkyblinky · 14/06/2020 01:29

You are in the best place! Trust in the doctors. I was hospitalised at 27 weeks with pre eclampsia and they got me to 32 weeks. Doctors and midwives can do amazing things. Wishing you all the luck.
P.s - don't know where you are, my sister is a neo nates nurse in Worcester - the best possible care I promise you x

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/06/2020 01:32

Best of luck with everything. Try not to worry as you are in the best place and are doing what is best for your baby.

Gunpowder · 14/06/2020 01:55

It happened to my sister and she got to 36 weeks! Hope you do too.

excitednerves · 14/06/2020 06:25

I had my baby at 33 weeks, so a little further on than you. I hope they can delay labour for you, if not, the neonatal units are incredible! There were some teeny 26 week-ers in when I was there and the nurses (and equipment) do incredible things. They really are guardian angels.

You’re in the best place, I’m keeping everything crossed for you.

CleverQuacks · 14/06/2020 06:33

Thanks for all your messages. I managed to get a couple of hours sleep which is good. Still bleeding a bit but my waters haven’t gone so that’s positive. Baby is kicking lots which is giving me hope that he is going to be ok. All we can do now is wait I think.

How scary OP.
Hopefully bubba will stay nice and snug just for a bit longer. You're in the best place. Can you give your key to the maternity reception and they leave it at main reception for someone to come and collect it then get your stuff for you?

Zara1234uk · 14/06/2020 09:03

Hello I hope you are doing ok! I don’t have any personal experience with this however my cousin had her twins at 28w exactly and they were born at 1lb something and 2lb something and they’re now nearly 1 and perfectly healthy and happy. The larger twin actually popped her waters as mum was so tiny she couldn’t accommodate both babies. So I think as long as your waters don’t break you can hang on possibly. Good luck Flowers

LexiM · 14/06/2020 09:04

How scary and thinking of you. Hope baby is happy to stay in there longer. ❤️

Brenna24 · 14/06/2020 09:11

Everything crossed for you. You are in the best place.

MrsRose2018 · 14/06/2020 12:18

@CleverQuacks that's great news that your waters haven't broken!! What have they done for you in hospital?

Are you having a scan? Every week is a huge achievement and when I was in hospital 28 weeks was our first goal! I'm so glad you've got lots of movement!! x

excitednerves · 14/06/2020 12:24

@CleverQuacks that sounds positive! Stay in there, little one!

Brenna24 · 19/06/2020 08:01

How are you doing?

Yorkiee · 19/06/2020 09:19

25 weeks and things started going downhill but baby she managed to stay in and they didn't induce me till 36 weeks and 6 days!

Ilovewillow · 19/06/2020 09:24

Thinking of you and your baby! You're in the right place with the right people. Thanks

Frazzled2207 · 19/06/2020 09:28

Thinking of you. Can your family not somehow collect the keys from hospital so that they don’t have to break in? surely the staff can help with this.

If waters have not gone yet there is a chance that baby will stay put for now. Great that you’ve had the steroids. I do know one 28 weeker- his parents had a tough few weeks but no known issues 3 years on.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 22/06/2020 23:33

How are you doing OP?

BruceAndMarley · 23/06/2020 07:54
