Hi all

Any baby items which you bought and totally regretted or didn't use? Just curious

Baby swing neither of my DCs liked it it wasn't stupid money but £60 we could have spent on something else.

rooarsome · 13/06/2020 20:46

Outfits! I soon learned that sleepsuits were the way to go
Bottle warmer
Nappy bin
Gro egg
Expensive rockers (both preferred a cheapy bouncer)

Megan2018 · 13/06/2020 21:07

It’s such an individual thing. I love my expensive pram, gets used at least once every day as well as the Ergobaby carrier. I carry for country walks and to do jobs at home, but I love the pushchair for shops, stables etc (not safe to carry with the horse). We did research very carefully though as it was over £1k.
We are still using the infant car seat on it too as a travel system at 9 months old (small baby perks!)

My swing was 2nd hand as was most of our other stuff.

I haven’t used my breast pump more than 3 times and have unused bottles and steriliser as just find BF from source easier, but was pleased to have them just in case as we live miles from shops. I’ll sell on.

I vote for buying as much 2nd hand as possible Smile

Fancy outfits and all her newborn clothes for that matter(DD2 was born 10lb 4oz so went straight into 0-3m!)
Nappy bin, never used, totally forgotten about it tbf.
Baby swing
Scratch mitts

LilacSloth · 13/06/2020 23:16

A jumperoo. Took up most of the room and baby not fussed by it at all. Doesn't even pack away small so still taking up loads of space in the loft.

LilacSloth · 13/06/2020 23:21

Ooh - scratch mitts as well. Had forgotten them. Baby just flicked then straight off.

SamSeabornforPresident · 13/06/2020 23:41

It is soooo individual. I've used my travel system pretty much every day since my 15mo was born. I used a cot top changer with both, (and still occasionally dress my 3yo on it!). A lot of people talk about having to change their baby after they puke or do an explosive poo - again, my two didn't really do that, and I rarely had to change them during the day.
Yy on the hats, and blankets. We had loads, and loads of baby shoes that were given away unknown. I made a point of buying scratch mitts before DD1 was born but then realised that most sleepsuits come with them built in.
My electric breast pump was one of the best things I bought. I had to express with DD1 as she was slow to put on weight because of a bad latch and having expressed bottles gave me a bit of freedom with DD2.
Ewan the dream sheep was a waste of money, which was very disappointing as my DDs did NOT sleep. It put DH to sleep though. Hmm

Rocking nursing chair with foot stool. So bloody uncomfortable, I never breastfed in it. Ended up being an expensive chair for bedtime stories. Would have been much better off using a comfy armchair,

As an aside, we frequently used our baby bath and nappy bin, and will do so again for DS2.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 14/06/2020 00:12

Oh yeah and gimmicky white noise toys. Sounds crap, overpriced and eat batteries.

White noise is good, just buy a proper plug in machine for £20 off Amazon. Sounds quality will be much better, more variety of sound, better timer and won’t run out of batteries in the middle of the night or need new batteries ever week. No child needs to hug their white noise.

EastMidsMumOf1 · 14/06/2020 00:29

Yy to the nursing chair too!
Mine became the dumping ground where worn clothes go that arent dirty but not "clean" to put back in the wardrobe!

managedmis · 14/06/2020 02:37

Breast pump
Sling
Fancy baby clothes.... Jeans for babies?!

CtrlU · 14/06/2020 02:52

Cot. I used it for the first 4 days and it’s never been used since. I even said next child I would co-sleep as well so I don’t think I would use it again

Nat6999 · 14/06/2020 03:10

Carry cot, spending loads on a big pram, ds was in a MacLaren Buggy by 3 months, snowsuits, he kept on getting them bought for him but was never the right size at the right time, Breast Pump, it's still in the cupboard unopened & ds is 16, parasol for buggy, was a pain in the bum getting caught on things in shops & falling down when set up, baby bath, too heavy when full, I used a washing up bowl when he was tiny & sat him in the sink up to being 18 months old.

The only things worth buying are a bouncy chair, car seat, cot & lots of bedding, travel cot to use as a playpen, changing mats, I bought cheap ones so I had one upstairs, one down & one at my mum's, changing bag, I got a brand new Mama's & Papa's one at a car boot sale, just kept it in the car boot & restocked it if needed, high chair, muslins, bibs, sleepsuits, vests, I had a little fleece hoodie that was great for in the carseat, not thick but just enough to keep him warm.

longtimecomin · 14/06/2020 05:06

A beautiful sling, cost me over £100 but the baby didn't like being in it : (

Bobbiepin · 14/06/2020 12:24

Lots of people saying changing table. We got a chest of drawers from mamas and papas that has removable sides that go on top to act as a changer. Put a mat on it and still using it, but when dd is out of nappies, the sides come off and it's just a chest of drawers that she'll use for years. Purpose built changing tables are a waste of money.

FriedasCarLoad · 14/06/2020 13:21

Many PPs have said outfits were a waste of money, but DD almost always wore (and wears still at 20 months) pretty dresses, with cardigans if cool enough.

The baby bath gets used every day - saves lots of water compared to filling the main bath.

Funnily enough the baby gifts we never used were wet wipes and nappies - because we went for cloth instead!

CoffeeRunner · 14/06/2020 13:25

Cots! I bought 2 (10 year gap between DC2 & 3).

Used to store teddy bears mainly! The babies never slept in them Blush.

FriedasCarLoad · 14/06/2020 13:27

And by the way, our biggest money saver was avoiding buying new. We accepted lots of hand-me-downs, looked out on freecycle etc and bought second hand.

Much of what we obtained had either never or hardly been used, which isn't so surprising reading the comments above!

If you then know you use something a lot you can always replace it with a new or more expensive version. But we spent only a few hundred £ on our baby in the first year, and she had everything she could possibly need; friends spent ten times that!

wintertime6 · 14/06/2020 13:31

A rocking chair and foot stool for the nursery, hardly ever used and now it's home to lots of teddy bears. Planning to sell it on gumtree soon.

coffeechocolatecoffee · 14/06/2020 13:49

Incredible how different we all are!

My changing table is also chest of drawers with side and has been used constantly for nearly 4 years now (2 children with 21 month gap). The drawers will be used alone once youngest is out of nappies.

Feeding chair was a godsend when both were young and I still use it for bedtime stories. I was very fussy snd did not want a wooden one. It is faux leather and extremely comfortable and I have no intention to get rid of it in the foreseeable future.

We used a wide laundry basket in place of baby bath but would have bought one if we didn't have basket, filling bath was waste of water in early days

Graphista · 14/06/2020 14:02

We bought very little for dd prior to her being born.

I’ve a lot of baby/childcare experience so fortunately had a fair idea of what was really needed and what would likely be a waste of money although I did still buy a baby bath as I’d used with other babies but we had a big bathroom at the time with a large bathroom sink and so it was really pointless. I also struggled with the sling and never really got on with it, if sling libraries had been around then I would’ve saved myself money there. You don’t tend to use slings with other people’s babies - or at least I never did - so only tend to find out if they’re for you with your own.

We were also extremely lucky to be given loads by friends/family - not all new stuff but we were among last to have the 1st baby and so there were loads of hand me downs which we were not too proud to accept. Baby items are very little used by the time baby is on to next stage/has outgrown so they’re generally in good condition.

The only things we bought new were:

New mattresses for cot and Moses baskets (which we were given)

Travel system inc car seat

Sheets and blankets for cot

Wedge changing mats

Shed loads of Muslins and towels! You can never have too many of these!

Vests and socks - these items don’t last as well as outer clothes, vests get stained and socks get lost! We bought literally a FEW baby Grows and cute outfits and family and close friends bought some lovely items but mostly we were more than happy with the SACKS full of clothes we got given as hand me downs - some of which still had labels on!

One thing we WISHED we had bought and forgot to leading to a very tough night at one point early on? Dummies! Yes I know they’re controversial but I found them an absolute godsend! And I was bf at that point too and they didn’t create an issue there.

Changing tables, nursery furniture, toys,

Breast pump was no good to me as I got no milk out that way but that won’t be true for everyone.

Bouncy chair - bought after she was born and again an absolute godsend and we had a really basic one as there weren’t the fancy rocking/vibrating ones cheaply available back then (almost 20 years ago)

Clothes you definitely want cheap, comfy, wash well items, probably (I’ll get shouted down by the greenies here) that tumble dries too as you do SO much laundry! Oh that reminds me! If you haven’t already get at least one (but a few would be better) of this type of thing (see pic) as very handy for drying small items without having to tumble dry which can mean they get lost or even bugger your machine!

Agree with @Bobbiepin on bottles if you ff at any stage. I bf until dd almost 10 months but it took several (expensive!) trials to find the bottles that worked best for her (and formula! Such a faff!)

Nappy bins I’ve never got along with either. Some of my clients liked them but I found them too faffy and I don’t think they’re really any more hygienic than using nappy sacks (although I’m able to wrap a used nappy with one hand so it doesn’t leak) and emptying bins regularly - a designated normal bin for nappies can be an idea. I just always used bathroom bin - I always have decent sized ones not stupid tiny pedal bin ones though.

Changing bag - again I had the benefit of experience with other people’s babies, I just had a normal rucksack which I kitted out with a folding changing mat, insulated bottle holder once she was ff and med - large ziplock style bags for any wet items! Make sure it has a handle at the top so you can hang it easily in public changing rooms and have it open ready to access what’s needed one handed. Top tip: of an evening sort changing bag for next day as then you’re less likely to forget something essential.

On scratch mits - don’t bother BUT maybe try and get baby grows with them sort of built in - the ends of the sleeves fold over

Graphista · 14/06/2020 14:05

Forgot to inc pic!

Also should read "Changing tables, nursery furniture, toys" are a waste of money in my opinion in early months.

Plus things like toys other people tend to buy as gifts. Young babies are fine with lots of interaction and things like finger play and water play.

What was your biggest waste of money
ChampooPapi · 14/06/2020 15:46

@coffeechocolatecoffee yes mine is too, proper solid wood one. Absolutely brilliant it's been and constantly useful. Maybe people are getting ones that don't have draws or something 🤷‍♀️

Pygmyseahorse · 14/06/2020 18:57

Most things gifted to us like jumperoo, outfits like skinny jeggings and denim jackets, not only very much not my taste but uncomfortable for baby and total fath
Baby bath, used twice then was a glorified laundry basket.

2nd hand pram.. Wish we waited and got a new one that suited needs better in hindsight which we did around 1.5/2 yrs
Also a huge back pack kind of carrier frame thing.. Never used, it takes up about half the only storage cupboard space

The things we did use and liked were sleepsuits til walking, soft sling but not a huge long one more like a 3 piece wrap then a carrier on the chest, and the two best toys being stacking cups and a pat mat you fill with water and plop on a highchair tray or on the floor

Rainbowchampagne · 14/06/2020 20:36

Second Ewan the sheep, just put white noise on your phone on tablet that baby likes

Second expensive rockers, they love the cheap bouncy ones when they work out how to bounce it themselves

However I love my baby bath! I have a huge bath and tiny sink, so it’s been a godsend for saving water

The best advice I was given (and did not follow) is to buy very little and see what baby needs when they arrive
