Hi all

Any baby items which you bought and totally regretted or didn't use? Just curious

Baby shoes and any outfits, mine were always in comfy sleep suits day and night.
Baby bath never used it. I'd had an emergency C section so I sometimes would give her a little bath in the kitchen sink saved me bending down.
I know some people said changing table but we used ours a lot.

shartsi · 13/06/2020 17:29

Moses basket
Special nappy bin
Changing bag - I used a Tesco bag for life for subsequent children and found it much more spacious and user friendly .

rottiemum88 · 13/06/2020 17:31

Outfits for young babies; genuinely wish I'd known that all I'd need was vests and sleepsuits for at least the first 6 months. Outfits might look cute but they're an absolute pain to get on and off a tiny baby for multiple nappy changes a day.

Also, we bought a fancy play mat that was quite expensive and DS hated it and would never lie on it. If I had it all to do again I'd have bought second hand

DaisyDando · 13/06/2020 17:33

Ewan the Dream Sheep. Had high hopes.

rottiemum88 · 13/06/2020 17:33

Oh and the cot; DS is almost 17 months and he's never slept a night in it yet, after going from his next to me upto 6 months into co-sleeping with me. I'm still hopefully we'll get him in the cot(bed) one day, but I doubt it'll be anytime soon Blush

Angelonia · 13/06/2020 17:34

Play pen. I thought it would be useful to have a safe place to pop DC in while I had a shower or whatever, but they hated it and the only thing it was useful for was to store toys.

Notso · 13/06/2020 17:37

Nappy disposal bin. Absolute waste of money unless I suppose you live in a flat and can't get to the dustbin easily. Otherwise who wants dirty nappies hanging round the house!

Snowsuits, fiddly and cumbersome. A wrap was much more user friendly.

Clothes that weren't rompers, dungarees or babygros. Particularly disliked dresses for DD.

I did however love my baby bath, I used it on the worktop in the kitchen as I hated bending over the bath.
Didn't have a changing table but always changed on a mat on the chest of drawers.

Natalie654321 · 13/06/2020 17:57

@daisydando hahaha yes!! I thought it would miraculously make my baby sleep through the night 😂😂😂

physicskate · 13/06/2020 18:01

Moses basket and stand. We used the stand maybe twice? She'd grown out of the basket by 8/8 weeks. Should have got a next to me...

Sailfin · 13/06/2020 18:04

Bottle warmer - use the microwave (check for hot spots on the bottle) as the warmer takes ages.

midwestsummer · 13/06/2020 18:10

Special nappy bin with expensive refill cassettes. Utterly pointless and pongy.

ChampooPapi · 13/06/2020 20:00

100 percent this! Such a waste of money

It's a Cocoonababy 😟

Molocosh · 13/06/2020 20:02

Oh god yes the play pen! I bought an expensive one with a mattress thinking the baby would nap in it as he outgrew his Moses basket. He screamed every time I put him in and never slept at all. It was basically a toy storage box.

FrugiFan · 13/06/2020 20:05

He had 2 suits to wear before he was 6m.. skinny jeans.. etc
Who buys suits for a 6 month old? Why do they even make suits for a 6 month old??

For me the biggest waste of money was the travel system. LO hated the baby car seat and it was too heavy to carry with her in it anyway. She screamed the whole time from about 3 months onwards and then we moved her into a joie 360 and she was fine. The carry cot part was barely used as we tended to use the sling and then she grew out of the carry cot anyway. We did use the pushchair for a while and then traded it for one with off road tyres and suspension which we should have just got in the first place.

Xyzzzzz · 13/06/2020 20:07

Perfect prep machine

Someone gifted dd a bouncer but she hates it. Just takes up space in my already small space

coffeechocolatecoffee · 13/06/2020 20:10

All the bottle paraphernalia - ended up ebf with very rare bottle but had full set of bottles, formula pots, bottle warmer etc as the John Lewis lady convinced me I needed it! If you're certain you want to formula feed then go ahead and get but otherwise wait and see. Same goes for breast pump, don't get one before, your needs will deffer based on if expressing lots of occasional bottle

Baby swing, Mil kindly bought it for us thinking baby would nap in it but spent a grand total of 1 hour and that was when awake. Barely used swing function at all and grew out of it by 4 months.

Lots of things I used first time and didn't touch with my second but won't say complete waste as I did use them with first baby when I felt a bit clueless

Fatted · 13/06/2020 20:13

Carry cot - Got approx 16 weeks of usage between two children!
Moses basket - used even less than the carry cot
Fancy swaddle wraps. My kids loved being swaddled. In a cheap blanket from Tescos.
Blankets. We had so many blankets and loads bought for us. The small ones were a good idea for the pram, but we used the sleeping bags at night and then they had a quilt. I have kept one though that I use when I'm watching telly 🤣
I never bought any, but we were bought loads of skinny jeans. Absolutely terrible idea. My mum was also obsessed with dungarees and bought loads. I can still vividly remember my 7YO having an explosive poop wearing dungarees my mum bought.
Baby bath. Just bath them in the bath with you or quick dunk in the sink.
Again, lots of baby lotion was bought for us. Still have no idea to this day what to use it for other than taking off eye make up.

Megan2018 · 13/06/2020 20:15

Cot and bedside crib. Baby has co-slept from hospital. But I would still have them.

I’ve actually used everything else I got, which is amazing really!

ShirleyPhallus · 13/06/2020 20:20

Hats. All the lists tell you to buy hats but she was born in March so I think we used them a handful of times

Yes to cardigans too, just why?!

Conversely to some on this thread, I loved leggings and tops which are much easier to layer than sleepsuits and get off for nappy changes.

Also love our baby bath. She enjoys pooing in the bath so I’d be too scared to take her in with me

ShirleyPhallus · 13/06/2020 20:22

Oh and the sleepyhead. It gets rave reviews but given the baby ideally shouldn’t sleep in it overnight then it became quite an expensive bit of kit just to plonk the baby in when I had a shower

ladytremaineswig · 13/06/2020 20:26

Baby bath
Outfits
Scratch mits
Toys

Lalapurple · 13/06/2020 20:26

Next to me cotbed - baby slept in it a few times and then moved to our bed.
Baby bottles - I breastfed and never used a bottle

On the other hand we did use the baby bath. I think it's very individual what people end up using...
Baby shoes are definitely a waste of time though.

Phantom1 · 13/06/2020 20:27

Moses basket because it was far too heavy.

Northernsoullover · 13/06/2020 20:30

My posh travel system/pram. Within 6 months I'd bought a Mcclaren stroller. Loads of my friends also regret splurging almost the price of a holiday on a pram but I wouldn't ever tell anyone not to because its such an exciting purchase. Just don't get too carried away Wink.

Darkstar4855 · 13/06/2020 20:32

Pram. Used mine three times in six months, much preferred the sling. Ditched it and got a lightweight buggy at 6m.

Fancy outfits. Used sleepsuits and vests until 6m.

Gro bags, mine only slept if swaddled.

Did use my breast pump a lot, and the next to me crib.
