Membrane sweep

I'm 40+1 weeks pregnant and just had a membrane sweep so was wondering how soon after did your waters break or contractions started? Having so much pain in my hips and ready for labour to start now 😫

BessMarvin · 06/06/2020 19:45

I had a sweep at 38+6 I think it was and just almost exactly 3 days later contractions started.

dochas06 · 06/06/2020 19:46

I had 3 sweeps and ended up being induced

Ginfilledcats · 06/06/2020 19:49

? It's Saturday today!
Ginfilledcats · 06/06/2020 20:25

@bessmartin oops I meant Thursday! Losing track of the days!! I'm booked for the same next Thursday but had midwife appt on Monday so May ask for another then!

happymummy12345 · 06/06/2020 20:31

My labour was more long than anything else. I was due on the Sunday 30th august 2015, I was booked in for a sweep originally on the Wednesday, but I started having contractions on the Tuesday so I decided to see if things would progress naturally. They didn't so I ended up having a sweep at 3pm on the Friday (40+5).
I got to the hospital at 9 that evening, was in the birth centre by 10.30, had my waters broken around 2am, then gave birth at 6.58am the Saturday morning (40+6).
It didn't hurt or feel uncomfortable at all and it did help move things along (the head wasn't fully engaged so things wouldn't have progressed on their own).

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 06/06/2020 20:31

The only time I had one that worked (with dc2) I went into labour a couple of hours after having it done. I had sweeps done with 3 other dc (4 of them with dc7) and none of them worked

Dalmore30 · 06/06/2020 21:18

@3babiesforme can I ask how uncomfortable / painful they are? Expecting to be offered one at my next appointment and can’t decide whether to take it or not.

Notajogger · 06/06/2020 21:20

As others I also had a few but had to be induced.

Zoey92 · 06/06/2020 21:22

Im having one too on Thursday I'll be 38+4
Ibhave been pre warned being my first baby it may nit even do anything but we can only hope

CupcakesK · 06/06/2020 21:29

On my due date, although the midwife couldn’t complete it due to positioning. Went into labour that evening anyway!

3babiesforme · 06/06/2020 22:10

@Dalmore30 my friend had it done on Thursday and said she found it painful so I was scared when I had mine booked in, but when I had it done it was fine it didn't hurt at all just more uncomfortable but definitely not painful. I think it depends on midwife doing it, maybe take a paracetamol before hand just in case. I wouldn't worry if I was you x

I had mine done by a consultant who apparently are less gentle. It was certainly tolerable but wasn't pleasant. Uncomfortable and had to breath through it but it doesn't last long. Worse than a smear but was honestly not that bad (and I'm a wimp).
Mine also may have been worse as my cervix was very much closed!

Candycats · 06/06/2020 22:26

I had one in the morning at 40+3, contractions started at 4pm that day, waters broke at midnight and DS was born just after midday the following day 😊

If your hips allow it get out for a walk. Nipple stimulation is also proven to release oxytocin. Good luck, baby will be in your arms soon xx

TheComeToBedEyesOfMrTumble · 06/06/2020 23:30

I had a sweep with my third dc at 40+10, irregular tightenings the next day, proper contractions the next day and baby finally came early hours 40+13! Good luck!

BessMarvin · 07/06/2020 15:08

I was worried about it being painful but it was much better then expected. Quick and I was surprised when she said she was done. (And also said that she didn't think she'd need to repeat it in a few days. She was not wrong.)

happymummy12345 · 07/06/2020 16:02

For those asking about pain. Mine didn't hurt at all. I wasn't even uncomfortable. The midwife was surprised at how well I managed

Ginfilledcats · 08/06/2020 06:32

Update - I've had a second sweep where I was 1cm dilated and cervix pointing in the right direction. Done by trainee midwife and it was so much more tolerable, more like a gentle smear. Suppose pain threshold depends on you, the person performing it and your cervix I guess?

BessMarvin · 08/06/2020 10:30

Hope you have your baby soon Ginfilledcats

Persiaclementine · 08/06/2020 11:12

I had two, second one I think may have started things off but got induced about four days later, the second one hurt alot I think that made a difference

Lockdownmum1010 · 08/06/2020 14:22

I had 4. Bloody show started after the first one, and had some mild contractions after the second one, but then nothing happened and I went on to be induced at 40+12!
