Upset - 36 week and being sent for scan

Someone please tell me a positive story

Just been for my 36 week appointment at the birth centre. All previous measurements have been bang on the middle centile line and absolutely fine. Until today.

It was a different midwife and she told me 'well he's certainly not small' and measured him to now be above the top line and sending me for a growth scan.

Has anyone else had this? What was your outcome?

I'm only 5'2 so part of me just thinks baby has no room in there but part of me also knows how bad my diet has been (all I've craved is sweet foods) so could have contributed to him being bigger.

Stories please, I'm feeling very emotional and upset about it right now :(

I had this. I was measuring above the 90th centile at 36 weeks. I had a growth scan the following day which gave a weight of 6lbs 5ozs, and an estimated term weight of 8lbs 7ozs. Baby born at 40 weeks at 7lbs 5ozs.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 05/06/2020 18:32

I was measuring on the 99th centile. Dd was 8lb 3oz, and just above the 50th centile.

Rodent01 · 05/06/2020 18:37

I looked enormous, DD2 was 7 somrthing, but on placenta emerging, the midwife was fascinated. Turned it inside out, Envy (revolting!) messed around with it, said it was one of the largest she’d seen. That evidently contributed to my huge size I think!!!!

userabcname · 05/06/2020 18:38

My friend had this- she measured too big, was sent to growth scans which confirmed he was a big baby, ended up being induced on her due date and he was 8lbs. Which, ok, isn't small but sure as heck wasn't the monster they'd made out she was having!

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 05/06/2020 18:44

I had this too with DD1. Measured large and got sent for a scan. Was told at 36 weeks she was “at least” 8lb already with a “very large head”. She was born at 39+6 at 7lb 5oz, perfectly average head and on only the 75th centile 🤷🏼‍♀️

An obstetrician later told me it can be hard to tell later scan measurements because the mothers hip bones are blocking the view. Also if you have denser than usual hip bones it can be even harder to tell.

Take it all with a pinch of salt!

I had a scan at 32 weeks, baby was offvthe charts. I was obvs talk of the hospital (well that section anyway) as when I went for my gtt test the midwife said oh you're the one with the 6lb 5 baby at 32 weeks. Made me feel so much better. I continued being way off the chart for the next growth scans.

Anyway baby was bo&&rn at 37 weeks, 6lb 15 which was 57th percentile

nosnugglesforyou · 05/06/2020 18:53

They said my baby was too big and went for an extra scan, there they said it was smaller and not a worry. But she was nearly 7lb. She was born 3 weeks later at 6lbs 5. I wouldn’t worry....

Banana0pancakes · 05/06/2020 19:07

I measured off the charts with Dd at 32 weeks. Had to do diabetes testing at home because the scan showed she was massive. Consultant said shoulder dystocia was a real possibility so opted for a section.

Dd was born 39+6 at 8lbs 7oz. I didnt have Gd either Hmm

2020firsttimemum · 05/06/2020 19:16

Thank you ladies that makes me feel better

Sometimes the midwives can be so blunt and to the point but don't really put any emotion into it at all. And as a FTM I'm not too sure what to expect

I hope everything is okay - can't think of anything worse than a c section but naturally I'm thinking worst case scenario!

Yes, got sent for a growth scan at 37 weeks as I was "measuring big". He was a perfectly average 8lb baby. I am 5ft nothing obviously bump had to go out as it couldn't go up!

Banana0pancakes · 05/06/2020 19:43

It's tough because most people will say their scan was wrong but when you're the person being told your baby is off the chart it is so worrying.

I'm glad I had a section, it was peaceful and i didn't have to worry about her getting stuck so even though it was the last thing i wanted, it was actually the best thing for me in the end.

Greengrapes1357 · 05/06/2020 19:45

I'm 5'1 and had a 9lb4oz baby - naturally at term. I wouldn't worry unduly at this stage. Also my twins measured a whole lb each more than their birth weights so the scans are not 100% accurate.

Xiphisternum · 05/06/2020 19:53

I'm sure you can think of lots of worse things than having a section and if you can't it's worth bringing it up early with your midwife so you can discuss it. Good luck with your scan, hope it all works out how you want.

WitchDancer · 05/06/2020 20:05

I was told I was having a 10lb baby at a scan. He was born 2 days later at just 8lb 2oz. 🤷‍♀️

TenLun89 · 05/06/2020 20:09

I measured big from 24 weeks, 35 week said baby was on 99th centile and was 7lb, he was born at 39 weeks 10lb 1

thetangleteaser · 05/06/2020 20:14

My baby measure on the 80th centile consistently, I had a growth scan 3 days overdue and they said he was 8lb10oz, which was literally just below the 90th centile, I was terrified. He was born a whole week later and weighed 7lb, technically he was growth redistricted as had only put on 5oz from my 36 scan and this was completely missed. Take it all with a pinch of salt.

shhhFFS · 05/06/2020 20:24

I got sent for a growth scan at around 34 weeks as they thought baby was too small, small bump, wasn't measuring well on scans. Gave birth to an 8lb 11 whopper! I suppose its nice to know they are checking things whenever there is concern, but scans are by no means an exact science by the sounds of it!

BeMorePacific · 05/06/2020 20:32

I had growth scans. My baby was 9lbs 8. But I was 42 weeks by that point. Try not to worry xx

Soontobe60 · 05/06/2020 20:57

If you're having a big baby, you won't automatically be offered a section. You'll most likely be offered induction by your due date. Dontbanic. I'm 5' 2" and my 1st DD was 7lb 11oz with a 2 day labour ending in episiotomy, whereas my 2nd DD was 9lb 4oz with a 3 hour natural labour following induction.

ScarfLadysBag · 05/06/2020 20:59

Growth scans are incredibly common. Everyone in my NCT group bar one woman measured big and was sent for them, including me. Guess who had the biggest baby? The woman who measured on target the whole time. She had a 9lb+ baby. The rest of us had entirely average weight babies.

mylittlesandwich · 05/06/2020 21:03

I had lots of growth scans and a big baby and a c-section.

I am overweight so more likely to have a big baby. From what I've heard growth scans are not usually very accurate so there's every chance of you having an average weight baby. I had a feeling he was big so I agreed with him. I really hope you get the birth you want but if you do end up needing a c-section it's not awful, I had a really positive experience and if I have any more children I'll happily have another.

Darkstar4855 · 05/06/2020 21:08

They’re measuring your bump, not your baby! It’s not very accurate. Mine measured on about the 99th centile by the end, baby was 8lb 8oz.

BirdsDoIt · 05/06/2020 21:10

I was sent for growth scans for both of my babies because of them measuring big. They said no cause for concern and I ended up having both of them at home with no pain relief - the first was 8lb 11 oz (born at 41 weeks + 6 days) and the second was 7lb 3oz (born at 41 weeks). Don’t worry, it’s just a precaution.

onetiredmummy13 · 05/06/2020 21:31

I got a growth scan at 30weeks and baby is measuring off the charts and I have extra fluid but my bump seems to measure for the exact weeks I am. I'm scared I'm having a massive baby another growth scan at 36weeks then speak to consultant. I was tested for gd and it was negative. Previous baby was 8lb at 39weeks so big for first

onetiredmummy13 · 05/06/2020 21:34

Sorry posted too soon. Just wanted to say your not alone. My hospital don't tell you estimated birth weights as that's what they are estimates. Also the consultant didn't mention c section more likely induction at 38 or 39 weeks. Try not too stress too much you would rather a big healthy baby than a tiny baby.
