Can you undo the damage of take aways?

Hello,

I'm seven weeks pregnant on Saturday and for the last two weeks we've had take aways for tea almost every night due to our oven being bored and in all honesty we've just been lazy! It's mostly been curries.

Ovens coming tomorrow and I've sworn off take aways now (at least every other night, I'm not gonna say no to a treat) but I'm worried I might have hurt the baby :(

Any advice?

Thanks

You haven’t hurt your baby. Why would you think you have?

NeutralJanet · 04/06/2020 17:47

You won't have hurt the baby with a few curries.

ItchySeveredFoot · 04/06/2020 17:48

The baby is way too small to have been affected. Just try and eat a little healthier from now on and remember to take your pregnancy vitamin. Go easy on yourself. It's a confusing time. When I was 6 weeks pregnant with dd1 I didn't know it and went on an all day bender at a festival. She turned out fine!

I've just read that take aways are bad for pregnant women and the babies and I'm just a bit worried about it

Where did you read it? It sounds like nonsense. Don't worry, you and your baby will be fine :)

Ughmaybenot · 04/06/2020 17:49

What? Why would this have caused any damage at all?
The only issue would be if you ate them every single night as that would be unhealthy, but that’s just general!

ToothFairyNemesis · 04/06/2020 17:49

No you have nothing to worry about. Obviously if you had a takeaway every day for the rest of your pregnancy that’s not a healthy diet. But you can still have takeaways when pregnant at any stage.

Sipperskipper · 04/06/2020 17:50

How would you have hurt the baby?! Its just curry!

There are certain foods to avoid in pregnancy (particularly rare meat, unwashed fruit & veg / unpasturised cheeses / alcohol) due to risks of toxoplamosis & listeria. Curry and takeaway isn't something you need to worry about!

If you're worried about your weight just be a bit sensible (and I say this as an overweight pregnant woman!)

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 04/06/2020 17:50

No, you haven't hurt the baby. Read "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster, she goes into the science and stats behind reccomendations for pregnant women. I found it really reassuring.

Congratulations!

Mumoblue · 04/06/2020 17:50

Don't worry about it.
I ate terribly through my pregnancy because of my awful hyperemesis and I worried so much about it. My doctor told me that my baby would take what he needed and I just needed to eat. I mainly ate chicken and potatoes because it was all I could stomach.

If the doctors were okay with me doing that, a curry or two is going to do no damage.

Percephone · 04/06/2020 17:50

It's fine. The main risk is putting on weight! As long as you're not doing it every night for 9 months you'll be ok.

ScarfLadysBag · 04/06/2020 17:51

Why would takeaways hurt the baby? I ate them all through pregnancy! Confused

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/06/2020 17:52

Take aways are only bad in the context of weight gain and even then only really if you are obese / morbidly obese already - women in that category are told (often quite bluntly) that the usual rules of pregnancy weight gain don’t apply to them and they must be maintaining or reducing their weight. Take aways in that context are really unhealthy.

NowImLivinInExeter · 04/06/2020 17:54

erm I ate them at least twice a week for my entire pregnancy and that baby is now 4 and completely healthy.

BadAlice · 04/06/2020 17:55

What do you think would be bad about it? Two weeks of less than perfect eating isn’t all of a sudden going to make you hugely deficient in anything. There are women who live in war zones and refugee camps who have healthy babies despite living on basic rations, they aren’t exactly rating quinoa and salmon every night are they?

The only risks with eating lots of takeaways are basic food hygiene ones (which shouldn’t be an issue if it’w a decent place), and your weight which can be contributing factor to complications.

Elouera · 04/06/2020 17:58

As others have said, take-aways are very high in salt, fat and sometimes sugar. They won't hurt the baby, unless you were eating unpasteurised cheese, undercooked or raw meat, or bottles of alcohol! The only thing they hurt is your waistline, and possible lack nutrients and fibre depending what you eat. Read up the NHS website on safe foods.

There are many foods which can be quickly cooked without an oven too, just using a stove top or using a slow cooker where you shove it all in and leave it. Stir fries, soups, salads, omelettes, fried rice, microwave jacket potatoes etc etc.

You won't have hurt your baby by eating takeaway curries.

PotteringAlong · 04/06/2020 18:02

I've just read that take aways are bad for pregnant women

Eating takeaway every night for 14 days is bad for anyone, pregnant or not.

The baby will be fine. They are basically parasites who take what they need from you.

P0lka · 04/06/2020 18:09

Unless it was a ketamine curry and you sprinkled coke over your chips instead of salt, I think you'll be fine.

Try and relax, and take your advice from objective, science based sources Smile

ElectricTonight · 04/06/2020 18:20

What 🙈the baby will be fine!

Footywife · 04/06/2020 18:23

This is a wind up post right?

dottiedodah · 04/06/2020 18:26

Well you are doing well to not be suffering from sickness! Honestly please dont worry .Curries will not hurt baby! Maybe ease off now for a few weeks though .Lots of salads ,veggies , even healthy triple decker wholemeal ham /salmon/cheese or stir fries ?

SparkyBlue · 04/06/2020 18:27

Honestly don't worry. Despite all the advice and the stuff in books a lot of women eat a lot of unhealthy food during pregnancy as it's all they can tolerate even if they are super healthy normally. All I could drink for ages was cold cans of coke. I knew it was wrong and bad for me but even the thought of water made me retch.

Fanthorpe · 04/06/2020 18:29

I’m very much enjoying the unintentional addition of speech and language therapists to curry.

TW2013 · 04/06/2020 18:30

If you lived in a country where the predominant food was curry then you would be eating curry anyway so I wouldn't worry too much.
